Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Com bustion, sponsored by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). It was held on October 12-14, 1992, and was the sec ond workshop in the series on the subject. The first was held in 1989, and its proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag under the title "Major Research Topics in Combustion," edited by M. Y. Hussaini, A. Kumar, and R. G. Voigt. The focus of the second workshop was directed towards the development, analysis, and application of basic models in high speed propulsion of particular interest to NASA. The exploration of a dual approach combining asymptotic and numerical methods for the analysis of the models was particularly encouraged. The objectives of this workshop were i) the genesis of models that would capture or reflect the basic pllysical phenomena in SCRAMJETs and/or oblique detonation-wave engines (ODWE), and ii) the stimulation of a greater interaction between NASA exper imental research community and the academic community. The lead paper by D. Bushnell on the status and issues of high speed propulsion relevant to both the SCRAMJET and the ODWE parallels his keynote address which set the stage of the workshop. Following the lead paper were five technical sessions with titles and chairs: Experiments (C. Rogers), Reacting Free Shear Layers (C. E. Grosch), Detonations (A. K. Kapila), Ignition and Struc ture (J. Buckmaster), and Unsteady Behaviour ('1'. L. Jackson).

Book excerpt: This research involved theoretical studies of the chemical and fluid-mechanical phenomena which make turbulent combustion in high-speed flows different from such combustion in low-speed flows. Finite-rate chemistry plays a significant role in high-speed flows because of the small ratios of flow times to chemical times. The studies addressed ignition and extinction phenomena in nonpremixed turbulent combustion of hydrogen-air systems by both numerical and asymptotic methods. Efforts were made to provide a firmer foundation for the modeling of high-speed turbulent reacting flows, to aid in the development of a formulation which gives results that can be compared with experiments on turbulent combustion. It was shown that turbulent combustion occurs in the reaction-sheet regime in hypersonic propulsion, and the correspondingly needed critical ignition and extinction conditions for hydrogen-air systems were determined from fundamentals.

Book excerpt: This report describes the research performed during the second year of this three-year project. The ultimate objective of the project is extend the applicability of probability density function (pdf) methods from incompressible to compressible turbulent reactive flows. As described in subsequent sections, progress has been made on: (1) formulation and modelling of pdf equations for compressible turbulence, in both homogeneous and inhomogeneous inert flows; and (2) implementation of the compressible model in various flow configurations, namely decaying isotropic turbulence, homogeneous shear flow and plane mixing layer. Book excerpt: Since Damkohler and Reynolds numbers over the range of conditions relevant to supersonic hydrogen-air combustion were found to be consistent with the combustion occurring in the reaction-sheet regime, detailed numerical integrations were performed on the structures of counterflow hydrogen-air diffusion flames, for pressure from 0.5 to 10 atm and air temperatures from 300 K to 1200 K, at a hydrogen temperature of 300 K. The results showed extinction to occur at high enough rates of strain in most cases, but no extinction for air temperatures above 1000 K. Nitrogen chemistry was shown to have a negligible effect, and reduced chemical-kinetic mechanisms were developed for simplifying the computations. The compound extinction strain rates were found to be in excellent agreement with newly performed experiments. Compressibility effects are being taken into account, and the results are being worked into methods for describing turbulent combustion in high-speed flows.

Book excerpt: The overall goal of the research was to establish a strong foundation for understanding and predicting the interaction of fluid mechanical processes with chemical reactions in high speed flows. To accomplish this goal, expertise in chemical kinetics, experimental fluid mechanics and combustion, and computational fluid mechanics were brought together to make a systematic attack on turbulent reacting flows at high speed. In particular, the following tasks were established Task 1: High Speed Flow Experiments Including Mixing and Heat Release Task 2: Fundamental Combustion Experiments and Modeling Task 3: The Development and Application of Advanced Optical Diagnostics Task 4: Numerical Simulation Of Reacting Flows At High Speed The report summarizes the goals of the research and the progress made in each of these tasks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing clean, sustainable energy systems is a pre-eminent issue of our time. Most projections indicate that combustion-based energy conversion systems will continue to be the predominant approach for the majority of our energy usage. Unsteady combustor issues present the key challenge associated with the development of clean, high-efficiency combustion systems such as those used for power generation, heating or propulsion applications. This comprehensive study is unique, treating the subject in a systematic manner. Although this book focuses on unsteady combusting flows, it places particular emphasis on the system dynamics that occur at the intersection of the combustion, fluid mechanics and acoustic disciplines. Individuals with a background in fluid mechanics and combustion will find this book to be an incomparable study that synthesises these fields into a coherent understanding of the intrinsically unsteady processes in combustors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research conducted under the sponsorship of this grant focused on fundamental investigations of mixing, chemical-reaction and combustion processes; in turbulent, subsonic, and supersonic flows. Research on hydrocarbon-combustion was on methane and ethane flames. Flame extinction strain-rate measurements, flame speed, and detailed experiment-simulation comparisons indicate difficulties in modeling of fuel-rich flames. Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of axisymmetric unsteady flows in both cold and hot impinging jets were also performed. The research included work on high-speed internal flows of interest to scramjet mixing and combustion, aimed at flow-control and flameholding issues. DNS and Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of Rayleigh-Taylor instability flows studied Reynolds number effects on mixing in this important flow. Advances in high-performance digital-imaging systems were transferred to the laboratory environment enabling measurements unachievable by other means.

Book excerpt: A work on turbulent premixed combustion is important because of increased concern about the environmental impact of combustion and the search for new combustion concepts and technologies. An improved understanding of lean fuel turbulent premixed flames must play a central role in the fundamental science of these new concepts. Lean premixed flames have the potential to offer ultra-low emission levels, but they are notoriously susceptible to combustion oscillations. Thus, sophisticated control measures are inevitably required. The editors' intent is to set out the modeling aspects in the field of turbulent premixed combustion. Good progress has been made on this topic, and this cohesive volume contains contributions from international experts on various subtopics of the lean premixed flame problem.
