Book excerpt: Air stripping is an economical and efficient method of removing dissolved volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from contaminated groundwater. Air strippers, however, produce a vent air stream, which must meet the local air quality limits. If the VOC content exceeds the limits, direct discharge is not possible; therefore, a carbon adsorption VOC capture system is used to treat the vent air. This treatment step adds a cost of at least $50/lb of VOC captured. In this program, a combined air stripper/membrane vapor separation system was constructed and demonstrated in the laboratory. The membrane system captures VOCs from the stripper vent stream at a projected cost of $15/lb VOC for a water VOC content of 5 ppmw, and $75/lb VOC for a water VOC content of 1 ppmw. The VOCs are recovered as a small, concentrated liquid fraction for disposal or solvent recycling. The concept has been demonstrated in experiments with a system capable of handling up to 150,000 gpd of water. The existing demonstration system is available for field tests at a DOE facility or remediation site. Replacement of the current short air stripping tower (effective height 3 m) with a taller tower is recommended to improve VOC removal.

Book excerpt: The past 30 years have seen the emergence of a growing desire worldwide to take positive actions to restore and protect the environment from the degrading effects of all forms of pollution: air, noise, solid waste, and water. Because pollution is a direct or indirect consequence of waste, the seemingly idealistic demand for “zero discharge” can be construed as an unrealistic demand for zero waste. However, as long as waste exists, we can only attempt to abate the subsequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. Three major questions usually arise when a particular type of pollution has been identified: (1) How serious is the pollution? (2) Is the technology to abate it available? and (3) Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? The principal intention of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering series is to help readers formulate answers to the last two questions. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to specific pollution pr- lems has been a major contributing factor to the success of environmental engineering, and has accounted in large measure for the establishment of a “methodology of pollution c- trol. ” However, realization of the ever-increasing complexity and interrelated nature of current environmental problems makes it imperative that intelligent planning of pollution abatement systems be undertaken.

Book excerpt: The pressure is on to cut plant emissions while still maintaining a cost-effective operation. Choosing the best solvent, being aware of potential problems, and the recovery of solvents has never been so important. Traditionally, solvents had been chosen on the basis of whether they can do the job effectively and economically. However, with regulations on exposure to solvent vapors becoming more stringent, selecting the solvent that meets regulatory, efficiency, and economical criteria as early as possible in the process has become paramount. Solvent Recovery Handbook, Second Edition sets out the physical properties of the fifty most commonly used solvents. The book supplies information on their behavior during and after use, health and fire hazards, the photochemical ozone creation potential (POCP), and recovery processes including practical aspects of the design and operation of batch stills. It delivers state-of-the art coverage of every available recovery and disposal technology - including removing solvents from gas, water, and residues, separating used solvents, and drying solvents. What's more, you'll find fact-filled sections on the latest equipment, safe effective operating procedures, choosing solvents with recovery in mind, and much more. Updated and expanded, Ian Smallwood's Solvent Recovery Handbook, Second Edition hands you all the practical tools you need to efficiently and cost-effectively process harmful organic solvents after re-capture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many cases, the application of in situ technologies evolved as a necessity from a cost perspective. However, the basic understanding of the mechanisms and theory behind these technologies was treated as a "black box." Although we have seen some tremendous successes in the application of remediation technologies over the past several years, we have also seen many cases in which a technology has been incorrectly or inappropriately applied. In most cases, this misapplication has been the result of a poor understanding of the basic concepts and mechanisms behind the technologies. Without proper understanding, the potential for misapplication of technologies remains a serious economic and technical threat.

Book excerpt: This CRCnetBASE version of the best-selling Environmental Engineers' Handbook contains all of the revised, expanded, and updated information of the second edition and more. The fully searchable CD-ROM offers virtually instant access to all of the interrelated factors and principles affecting our environment as well as how the government and the industry must deal with it. It addresses the ongoing global transition in cleaning up the remains of abandoned technology, the prevention of pollution created by existing technology. The Environmental Engineers' Handbook on CD-ROM provides daily problem solving tools and information on state-of-the-art technologies for the future. The technology and specific equipment used in environmental control and clean-up is included for those professionals in need of detailed technical information. Because analytical results are an essential part of any environmental study, analytical methods used in environmental analysis are presented as well. Data is clearly presented in tables and schematic diagrams that illustrate the technology and techniques used in different areas. Béla G. Lipták speaks on Post-Oil Energy Technology on the AT&T Tech Channel.
