Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2016 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Meteorology, Aeronomy, Climatology, grade: 8.0/10, , course: Fisheries and Aquaculture, language: English, abstract: This paper is a review of the impacts of climate change on fisheries in Zambia. Climate change has been having a remarkable impact in several areas. One of the areas is the area of fisheries and aquaculture. The author reviewed many papers written on the topic of aquaculture and fisheries. Zambia, like many other countries, have been facing many impacts from climate change. The paper aims to provide some suggestions on the solutions to combat climate change impacts. The variability in climate has caused a lot of problems to both marine and fresh water aquatic ecosystems. These problems have spread to terrestrial ecosystems posing problems to fresh water aquaculture, forest ecosystems as well as agricultural ecosystems. Climate change has thus become a regional and global problem causing concerns over the preservation of these ecosystems for future generations. One of the results of climate change is global warming. It has been predicted that between 2010 and 2070 the world surface temperatures will increase by between 10 C to 2.70 C. This impact will affect the world economically, socially, environmentally and ecologically. This paper reviews works by experts as well as national and international organizations on impacts of climate change on aquaculture and fisheries in Zambia. It seeks to investigate the methods of mitigating and adapting to climate change which the Zambian government and stake holder organizations have put in place and may be able to put in place. Further the paper assesses the hindrances to adaptation and mitigation of climate change impacts in Zambia.

Book excerpt: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) works towards ending hunger and poverty while using precious natural resources sustainably. The fisheries and aquaculture sector makes substantial contributions to food security, livelihoods and global trade. Global production of fish and other aquatic animals continued to grow and reached 179 million tonnes in 2018, and about 59.5 million people were engaged in the primary sector of capture fisheries and aquaculture. Fishery net exports generate significantly more revenue for developing countries than other agricultural commodities such as rice, coffee and tea. Millions of people are struggling to maintain reasonable livelihoods through the fisheries and aquaculture sector. These are the people who are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Climate change adds to the many threats and obstacles that already confront them in their day-to-day lives. Particular attention must be given to the most vulnerable if the sector is to continue to contribute to meeting global goals of poverty reduction and food security. This publication presents FAO’s work on climate change and fisheries and aquaculture. It includes examples of FAO’s support to countries so that they are better able to adapt to the impact of climate change in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. It also brings together FAO’s most up-to-date knowledge on climate change, including a portfolio of adaptation tools and measures used to support countries’ climate commitments and action plans.

Book excerpt: This report aims to accelerate climate change adaptation implementation in fisheries management throughout the world. It showcases how flexibility can be introduced in the fisheries management cycle in order to foster adaptation, strengthen the resilience of fisheries, reduce their vulnerability to climate change, and enable managers to respond in a timely manner to the projected changes in the dynamics of marine resources and ecosystems. The publication includes a set of good practices for climate-adaptive fisheries management that have proven their effectiveness and can be adapted to different contexts, providing a range of options for stakeholders including the fishing industry, fishery managers, policymakers and others involved in decision-making. These good practices were linked to one or more of the three common climate-related impacts on fisheries resources: distributional change; productivity change; and species composition change. Therefore, these three impacts can serve as practical entry points to guide decision-makers in identifying good practice adaptation measures suitable for their local contexts. These good practices are based upon transferable experiences and lessons learned from the thirteen case studies across the globe and hopefully will contribute to greater uptake and implementation of climate-adaptive fisheries management measures on the ground.

Book excerpt: This report aims to facilitate the use of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 5th Assessment Report (IPCC AR5) by those concerned with the fisheries and aquaculture sector and their dependent communities. The extensive information within the AR5 is condensed from the fisheries and aquaculture perspective and guiding links to the relevant IPCC documents facilitating further investigation are provided. The report moves from the chemical and physical changes already observed and forecaste d within the aquatic systems (inland and marine), to the implications of these changes for fisheries and aquaculture production systems. The AR5 is then reviewed for knowledge on the effects, vulnerabilities and adaptation options within the sector and their dependent communities at the continent and regional scales. The report concludes with a review of knowledge gaps from the fisheries and aquaculture perspective that would support further IPCC efforts.

Book excerpt: "Fisheries and fishing-dependent people are particularly vulnerable to disasters and climate change impacts. The objective of the study was to identify regional and national gaps and opportunities to reduce the vulnerability of the sector to impacts from climate change and increase the resilience of fisheries and aquaculture livelihoods to disasters. The identification of gaps and opportunities were made through a combination of a survey, website searches and reviews of documents - including policies, strategies or agreements - that contain fisheries/aquaculture and climate change adaptation (CCA)/disaster risk management (DRM) aspects. Identified national and regional priorities were compared to actions in place and thus gaps were identified. A total of 24 countries, 16 of which are least developed countries (LDCs), were considered for Southern and Eastern Africa. A regional workshop on climate change, disasters and crises in the fisheries and aquaculture sector in Southern and Eastern Africa was held in Maputo, Mozambique on 22-24 April 2013 to provide input into the gap analysis process and provide recommendations for addressing climate change adaptation and disaster risk management in fisheries and aquaculture."--Publisher's description.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview of the current scientific knowledge available on climate change implications for fisheries and aquaculture is provided through three technical papers that were presented and discussed during the Expert Workshop on Climate Change Implications for Fisheries and Aquaculture (Rome, 7-9 April 2008). A summary of the workshop outcomes as well as key messages on impacts of climate change on aquatic ecosystems and on fisheries- and aquaculture-based livelihoods are provided in the introduction of this Technical Paper. The first paper reviews the physical and ecological impacts of climate change relevant to marine and inland capture fisheries and aquaculture. The paper begins with a review of the physical impacts of climate change on marine and freshwater systems and then connects these changes with observed effects on fish production processes. It also outlines a series of scenarios of climate change impacts on fish production and ecosystems through case studies in different regions and ecosystems. The second paper tackles the consequences of climate change impacts on fisheries and their dependent communities. It analyses the exposure, sensitivity and vulnerability of fisheries to climate change and presents examples of adaptive mechanisms currently used in the sector. The contribution of fisheries to greenhouse gas emissions is addressed and examples of mitigation strategies are given. The role of public policy and institutions in promoting climate change adaptation and mitigation is also explored. Finally, the third paper addresses the impacts of climate change on aquaculture. It provides an overview of the current food fish and aquaculture production and a synthesis of existing studies on climate change effects on aquaculture and fisheries. The paper focuses on the direct and indirect impacts of climate change on aquaculture, in terms of biodiversity, fish disease and fishmeal. Contribution of aquaculture to climate change is addressed (carbon emission and carbon sequestration), as well as possible adaptation and mitigation measures that could be implemented.

It reviews in detail the positive and negative impacts of international fish trade on food security in low-income food-deficit countries. The main findings are that this trade has had a positive effect on food security, both through higher availability of fish for human consumption in developing countries and through higher income generated through trade. The report cautions, however, that sustainable resource management practices are a necessary condition for sustainable international trade. It also highlights the need for free and transparent trade and market policies to ensure that benefits from international trade are enjoyed by all segments of society.
