Book excerpt: "The visual environment contains a vast amount of information which is encoded efficiently by the visual system through the use of segregated dorsal and ventral streams. This study investigates the interaction between selected areas in the parallel dorsal and ventral pathways with the use of online repetitive TMS. The effects of TMS on two psychophysical tasks were investigated: a global motion task directed at the specialties of dorsal area hMT+ and a color contrast task directed at the specialties of ventral areas VO and V4. In each case, TMS was applied to the selected areas and a control area (vertex). Regions of interest were localized using fMRI. As our global motion task, we used a two-interval speed discrimination task with achromatic random dot kinematograms (RDKs) as stimuli, in which subjects were presented with a reference stimulus in the first interval and a test stimulus in the second interval. Regions of interest were dorsal area hMT+ and ventral area V4. The color contrast discrimination task consisted of isoluminant red stationary RDKs masked by achromatic noise and a similar two-interval design. Regions of interest were ventral area VO and dorsal area hMT+. Tasks were performed without and with TMS. We developed a task using two reference stimuli to avoid learning effects to replace the single fixed reference used in other studies. TMS was always applied during the second (test) interval. In the speed discrimination task, TMS was found to cause a perceived slowing of global motion stimuli, indicated by a significant increase in "test slower than reference" responses. This effect was not area-specific. Reaction times were longer with the TMS of hMT+ and shorter with the TMS of V4 compared to control, however, this difference did not reach significance. In the color contrast discrimination task, TMS did not have an effect on perceived contrast. Reaction times were longer with the TMS of VO and shorter with the TMS of hMT+ compared to control; again, this difference was non-significant. In conclusion, online rTMS was found to slow down motion perception. The trends seen in reaction times indicate a dissociation between dorsal and ventral areas and suggest that these areas exert a level of inhibition on each other. These findings provide insights into the working of dorsal and ventral streams in the visual system and pave the way for future studies." --

Book excerpt: "Although aspects of the visual image such as color, motion, form, and depth appear perceptually integrated, many are processed separately in different, specialized areas of the brain. This study investigates the differential effects of repetitive TMS (cTBS) in areas hMT+ and V1/V2 on global motion in order to reveal their roles in isoluminant chromatic compared to achromatic motion processing. Additionally, this study compares the differential effect of stimulation on motion direction versus simple detection thresholds to determine whether they have different physiological origins, since a dissociation between these two types of threshold has been established psychophysically. The report of moving or stationary phosphenes was used to localize brain areas hMT+ and V1/V2, respectively. The coil-position within each area that elicited the strongest phosphene responses was targeted for disruption by cTBS, a repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation protocol. The vertex was used as a control for non-specific cTBS effects. Stimuli consisted of either isoluminant chromatic or achromatic random dot kinematograms (RDKs). Participants performed a motion discrimination task in which the direction of Gaussian blobs (left or right) was identified, and a simple detection task, in which the presence of a low contrast stimulus was detected regardless of motion. Thresholds were measured before and four times after cTBS stimulation within one hour to investigate the effects of cTBS on performance over time, as this has not yet been established for vision. Performances on the motion discrimination task for both achromatic and isoluminant chromatic stimuli were significantly impaired following cTBS of area hMT+. In comparison, no effect of cTBS on performance was seen for areas V1/V2 and vertex. Maximal effects occurred at 10-11 minutes after stimulation. One hour after stimulation, performance returned to baseline levels. No differential effects of cTBS between the three brain areas were observed for the detection task. This study firstly validated the use of cTBS as a tool to impair the function of area hMT+. In doing so, it provides additional evidence that area hMT+ is involved in the analysis of both achromatically as well as chromatically defined global motion. In conclusion, area hMT+ is contributing to chromatic motion seen at isoluminance. The results indicate a causal link between neural activity in area hMT+ and the perception of chromatic motion." --

After the visual stimulus is encoded by the retinae, higher cortical areas of the visual system are involved in processing the complex visual features like color, shape, and motion. In this study, I mainly focused on the perception of pairwise correlations between two moving stimuli (referred to as the motion correlation detection). Previous studies have shown that our ability to perceive temporal correlations between two visual stimuli is limited to low temporal frequencies [28,37,42]. In other words, although subjects can perceive higher temporal frequencies in the visual stimulus, these higher temporal frequencies are not used to compute the presence of temporal correlations. The neural mechanisms that limit our ability to use high temporal frequencies to compute temporal correlations are not well understood. To date, several studies have investigated the temporal limits of the perceptions of temporal correlations in time domain [28,37]. Here I further examined the neural mechanism behind the band-limited nature of motion correlation detection using the neural recordings from area MT of visual cortex.In this thesis, I analyzed data collected from monkeys trained to detect the presence of correlated-motion in two randomly moving visual stimuli. I used behavioral performance along with the temporal correlations as a function of frequency (referred to as coherence) contained in both the stimulus and neural recordings. The goal was to better understand the neural mechanisms that band-limit nature of the animals’ temporal-correlation detection. The neural recordings were composed of multi-unit extracellular recordings from area MT that encoded each randomly moving stimulus. It was found that there was a close relationship between behavioral performance and the temporal correlations between two moving signals. I found that the time course of this relationship was related to the frequency of the moving signals. More specifically, the temporal correlations between two moving signals at lower frequency affected the behavioral performance of subjects earlier. It might suggest that the temporal correlations between two moving signals at different frequency band were perceived independently. Based on those findings, I proposed a descriptive model to explain how monkeys estimated the correlation between a pair of moving signals based on the coherence between them at different frequencies"--

Its discoverer, Paul Broca, was one of the first researchers to argue for a direct connection between a concrete behavior--in this case, the use of language--and a specific cortical region. Today, Broca's region is perhaps the most famous part of the human brain, and for over a century, has persisted as the focus of intense research and numerous debates. The name has even penetrated mainstream culture through popular science and the theater. Broca's region is famous for a good reason: As language is one of the most distinctive human traits, the cognitive mechanisms that support it and the tissues in which these mechanisms are housed are also quite complex, and so have the potential to reveal a lot not only about how words, phrases, sentences, and grammatical rules are instantiated in neural tissue, but also, and more broadly, about how brain function relates to behavior. Paul Broca's discoveries were an important, driving force behind the more general effort to relate complex behavior to particular parts of the cerebral cortex, which, significantly, produced the first brain maps.These early studies also, however, suffered from the use of crude techniques, definitions, and distinctions, as well as from ill founded and misdirected assumptions. Although much has been discovered since Broca's work, even today, these problems have not been completely solved. Nonetheless, particularly as a result of important advances made in neuroimaging during the past two decades, Broca's region and all language areas are currently being investigated from every angle. Indeed, as the volume of research into the relations between brain and language has created several communities, each with its own concepts, methods, and considerations, it seemed that it was time to stop, get together, and reflect on the state of the art.This book is the result of that collective reflection, which took place primarily at the Broca's Region Workshop, held in Julich and Aachen, Germany, in June 2004. In it, Yosef Grodzinsky and Katrin Amunts tried to accomplish a nearly impossible task: to mix intellectual traditions and cultures, and juxtapose rather disparate bodies of knowledge, styles of reasoning, and forms of argumentation. Participants were scientists with diverse backgrounds; each invited to contribute his/her particular take, with the hope that a coherent, perhaps even novel, picture would emerge. All of the participants have a special interest in Broca's Region, and represent the myriad angles from which we currently approach it: neuroanatomy, physiology, evolutionary biology, cognitive psychology, clinical neurology, functional imaging, speech and language research, computational biology, and psycho-, neuro-, and theoretical linguistics. The book's main chapters are the contributions of the Workshop's participants and their research teams. Parts of the discussion during the Workshop are included to underscore the richness of viewpoints, and to give readers an idea of the level of interaction that took place. As Broca's region is such a historically significant concept and rich area, this book contains a collection of classic and recent-yet-classic papers. Along with cutting-edge science, Grodzinsky and Amunts want to remind readers of the celebrated past from which much can be learned. The historical chapters include the first two papers written by Paul Broca, as well some work by two of the most important neurologists of the nineteenth century, Ludwig Lichtheim and John Hughlings-Jackson.
