This book offers an up-to-date and highly accessible overview of the Oxford Movement. Beginning formally in 1833 with John Keble's famous "National Apostasy" sermon and lasting until 1845, when Newman made his celebrated conversion to Roman Catholicism, the Oxford Movement posed deep and far-reaching questions about the relationship between Church and State, the Catholic heritage of the Church of England, and the Church's social responsibility, especially in the new industrial society. The four scholar-priests, who came to be known as the Tractarians (in reference to their publication of Tracts for the Times), courted controversy as they attacked the State for its insidious incursions onto sacred Church ground and summoned the clergy to be a thorn in the side of the government. These essays address the formative influences and circumstances that informed the mental world and disposition of Irish Anglicans, particularly clergy who were graduates of Trinity College Dublin (TCD), an institution pivotal in the formation of attitudes among the Irish Anglican elite. TCD was the gathering point for Anglicans of different backgrounds, and as such acted as a great leveler and formative center where laity and aspirant clergy were educated together under a common curriculum. In common with the Irish as a whole, TCD graduate clergy exerted an influence on colonial life in the religious, cultural, intellectual, and political spheres out of all proportion to their numbers. Faced with its dismantling in the old world, adherents of the Church of Ireland availed of opportunities for its reconstruction in the new and in the process bequeathed an important legacy in the colonial church.

At the beginning of this period, the Australian colonies were belligerently insisting they must not have a Poor Law, yet had reproduced many of the systems of charitable provision in Britain. By the start of the twentieth century, a combination of extended suffrage, basic wage regulation and the aged pension had led to a reputation as a 'social laboratory'. And yet half a century later, Australia was a 'welfare laggard' and the Labor Party's welfare state of the mid-1940s was a relatively modest and parsimonious construction. Models of welfare based on social insurance had been vigorously rejected, and the Australian system continued on a path of highly residual, targeted welfare payments. The book explains this curious and halting trajectory, showing how choices made in earlier decades constrained what could be done, and what could be imagined. The use of gestures, vestments, lighted candles, incense and other rituals associated with Anglicanism’s Roman Catholic past has formed a part of worship patterns since the denomination’s birth in the sixteenth century. However, due to the suspicion with which the majority of English people viewed Roman Catholicism, such practices never entered the mainstream. In the middle of the nineteenth century, a new wave of ritual practice swept through Anglicanism, not only in England, but across the world. While this wave was held in great suspicion by most churchgoers at first, by the turn of the nineteenth century, it had begun to influence the status quo, such that weekly Communion services, vestments and candles now form a normal part of regular Anglican worship. This book provides an introduction to ritualism’s origins in Anglicanism, and then examines how this movement took root in colonial South Africa. It finds that, after a period of fairly robust antagonism towards ritualism, a general movement towards ritualist practices began to emerge which characterised local Anglicanism’s ethos.
