When germ cells are produced in higher organisms, genetic recombination assures the proper segregation of like chromosomes. In the course of that process, called meiosis, recombination not only assures segregation of one chromosome of each type to progeny germ cells, but also further shuffles the genetic deck, contributing to the unique inheritance of individuals. In a nutshell, that is the classical view of recombination. We have also known for many years that in bacteria recombination plays a role in horizontal gene transfer and in replication itself, the latter by establishing some of the replication forks that are the structural scaffolds for copying DNA. In recent years, however, we have become increasingly aware that replication, which normally starts without any help from recombination, is a vulnerable process that frequently leads to broken DNA. The enzymes of recombination play a vital role in the repair of those breaks. The recombination enzymes can function via several different pathways that mediate the repair of breaks, as well as restoration of replication forks that are stalled by other kinds of damage to DNA. Thus, to the classical view of recombination as an engine of inheritance we must add the view of recombination as a vital housekeeping function that repairs breaks suffered in the course of replication. We have also known for many years that genomic instability--including mutations, chromosomal rearrangements, and aneuploidy--is a hallmark of cancer cells. Although genomic instability has many contributing causes, including faulty replication, there are many indications that recombination, faulty or not, contributes to genome instability and cancer as well. The (Nas colloquium) Links Between Recombination and Replication: Vital Roles of Recombination was convened to broaden awareness of this evolving area of research. Papers generated by this colloquium are published here. To encourage the desired interactions of specialists, we invited some contributions that deal only with recombination or replication in addition to contributions on the central thesis of functional links between recombination and replication. To aid the nonspecialist and specialist alike, we open the set of papers with a historical overview by Michael Cox and we close the set with a commentary on the meeting and the field by Andrei Kuzminov.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive review of the detailed molecular mechanisms of and functional crosstalk among the replication, recombination, and repair of DNA (collectively called the "3Rs") and the related processes, with special consciousness of their biological and clinical consequences. The 3Rs are fundamental molecular mechanisms for organisms to maintain and sometimes intentionally alter genetic information. DNA replication, recombination, and repair, individually, have been important subjects of molecular biology since its emergence, but we have recently become aware that the 3Rs are actually much more intimately related to one another than we used to realize. Furthermore, the 3R research fields have been growing even more interdisciplinary, with better understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying other important processes, such as chromosome structures and functions, cell cycle and checkpoints, transcriptional and epigenetic regulation, and so on. This book comprises 7 parts and 21 chapters: Part 1 (Chapters 1–3), DNA Replication; Part 2 (Chapters 4–6), DNA Recombination; Part 3 (Chapters 7–9), DNA Repair; Part 4 (Chapters 10–13), Genome Instability and Mutagenesis; Part 5 (Chapters 14–15), Chromosome Dynamics and Functions; Part 6 (Chapters 16–18), Cell Cycle and Checkpoints; Part 7 (Chapters 19–21), Interplay with Transcription and Epigenetic Regulation. This volume should attract the great interest of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and senior scientists in broad research fields of basic molecular biology, not only the core 3Rs, but also the various related fields (chromosome, cell cycle, transcription, epigenetics, and similar areas). Additionally, researchers in neurological sciences, developmental biology, immunology, evolutionary biology, and many other fields will find this book valuable.

Book excerpt: This book presents cutting-edge research and developments in the field of biomedical engineering, with a special emphasis on results achieved in Vietnam and neighboring low- and middle-income countries. Covering both fundamental and applied research, and focusing on the theme of “Translational Healthcare Technology from Advanced to Low and Middle Income Countries in the Era of Covid and Digital Transformation”, it reports on the design, fabrication, and application of low-cost and portable medical devices, biosensors, and microfluidic devices, on improved methods for biological data acquisition and analysis, on nanoparticles for biological applications, and on new achievements in biomechanics, tissue engineering, and regeneration. It describes the developments of molecular and cellular biology techniques, neuroengineering techniques, and statistical and computational methods, including artificial intelligence, for biomedical applications. It also discusses strategies to address some relevant issues in biomedical education and entrepreneurship. Gathering the proceedings of the 9th International Conference on The Development of Biomedical Engineering in Vietnam, BME 9, held on December 27-29, 2022, in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, the book offers important answers to current challenges in the field and a source of inspiration for scientists, engineers, and researchers with various backgrounds working in different research institutes, companies, and countries.

Book excerpt: High-throughput sequencing and functional genomics technologies have given us a draft human genome sequence and have enabled large-scale genotyping and gene expression profiling of human populations. Databases containing large number of sequences, polymorphisms, and gene expression profiles of normal and diseased tissues in different clinical states are rapidly being generated for human and model organisms. Bioinformatics is thus rapidly growing in importance in the annotation of genomic sequences, in the understanding of the interplay between genes and proteins, in the analysis the genetic variability of species, etc. The 3rd APBC brings together researchers, professionals, and industrial practitioners for interaction and exchange of knowledge and ideas. The proceedings contains the latest results that address conceptual and practical issues of bioinformatics.Papers presented at APBC'05 and included in this proceedings volume span the following: Novel Applications in Bioinformatics, Computational Analysis of Biological Data, Data Mining & Statistical Modeling of Biological Data, Modeling and Simulation of Biological Processes, Visualization of Biological Processes and Data, Management, Migration, and Integration of Biological Databases, Access, Indexing, and Search in Biological Databases.

Book excerpt: In this book, we present a collection of articles covering a wide range of current aging research and highlighting its prospects and future directions. These articles are based on or related to the topics of the 3rd International Conference «Genetics of aging and longevity». The Conference took place 6-10 April, 2014 in Sochi, the city located on the Black Sea coast near the Caucasian mountains, in Russia. Top gerontologists and geneticists from 31 countries around the world came together to discuss current problems in many areas related to the genetics of longevity and mechanisms of aging. We would like to thank those of them who contributed to this e-Book by sharing latest achievements, ideas and hypotheses. We hope that this e-Book will come to notice of scientists interested in the development of genetics of aging and longevity and in the search for life-beneficial environments and life-prolonging interventions.

As part of this assessment, the NRC hosted a scientific conference for Markey Scholars and Visiting Fellows in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico on June 28-30, 2002. The purpose of the conference was to enable the Scholars and Fellows to share their research experiences, just as they did at the annual Scholars Conferences previously conducted by the Markey Trust. All of the attending Scholars and Fellows submitted abstracts of their poster sessions. Six scholars, along with other experts in the biomedical sciences, made formal presentations. These proceedings consist of shortened versions of the individual presentations and the poster session abstracts.
