Book Synopsis A Setting For Excellence by : Frederick W. Mayer
Download or read book A Setting For Excellence written by Frederick W. Mayer and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are times when the mix of old and new buildings and the chaotic activities of thousands of students can give a haphazard appearance to the university, campus planning has in fact become a highly refined form of architecture. This is demonstrated in a convincing fashion by this immensely informative and entertaining history of the evolution of the campuses of the University of Michigan by Fred Mayer, who served for more than three decades as the campus planner for the university during an important period of its growth during the late twentieth century. By tracing the development of the Michigan campus from its early days to the present, within the context of the evolution of higher education in America, Mayer provides a strong argument for the importance of rigorous and enlightened campus planning as a critical element of the learning environment of the university. His comprehensive history of campus planning, illustrated with photos, maps, and diagrams from Michigan’s history, is an outstanding contribution to the university’s history as it approaches its bicentennial in 2017. Perhaps more important, Mayer’s book provides a valuable treatise on the evolution of campus planning as an architectural discipline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book explores the promise and limits of bottom-up, grass-roots strategies of community organizing, development, and planning as blueprints for successful revitalization and maintenance of urban neighborhoods. Peterman proposes conditions that need to be met for bottom-up strategies to succeed. Successful neighborhood development depends not only on local actions, but also on the ability of local groups to marshal resources and political will at levels above that of the neighborhood itself. While he supports community-based initiatives, he argues that there are limits to what can be accomplished exclusively at the grassroots level, where most efforts fail"--Back cover.

Book Synopsis Career Development and College Planning Needs of Rural High School Students by : Kimberly A. Ball
Download or read book Career Development and College Planning Needs of Rural High School Students written by Kimberly A. Ball and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to examine career and college planning needs of rural high school students. This was done by investigating archival data previously collected by a high school in a rural school district in the Northeastern United States. The initial research was done to examine the level of perceived preparedness for life after high school of the senior class at this high school. The purpose of re-examining the results was to find opportunities to meet career and college planning through district school counseling department initiatives. The findings suggest that opportunities do in fact exist, that rural populations have unique career and college planning needs, and that school counselors can strive to meet these needs. For example, participant responses suggested that students need more knowledge and understanding of financial aid, college requirements, and what career opportunities will exist for them in the future. Upon conclusion, a specific suggestion of developing and implementing a K-12 career development portfolio is given. A K-12 career portfolio would enhance career development through human development, help to streamline and improve district counseling curriculum, and serve as documentation of career and college planning throughout a students? schooling.
