Book Synopsis Chemistry and Technology of Lubricants by : Roy M. Mortier
Download or read book Chemistry and Technology of Lubricants written by Roy M. Mortier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-14 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Chemistry and Technology of Lubricants" describes the chemistry and technology of base oils, additives and applications of liquid lubricants. This Third Edition reflects how the chemistry and technology of lubricants has developed since the First Edition was published in 1992. The acceleration of performance development in the past 35 years has been as significant as in the previous century: Refinery processes have become more precise in defining the physical and chemical properties of higher quality mineral base oils. New and existing additives have improved performance through enhanced understanding of their action. Specification and testing of lubricants has become more focused and rigorous. "Chemistry and Technology of Lubricants" is directed principally at those working in the lubricants industry as well as individuals working within academia seeking a chemist's viewpoint of lubrication. It is also of value to engineers and technologists requiring a more fundamental understanding of the subject.

Book Synopsis Tribology and Mechanics of Magnetic Storage Devices by : Bharat Bhushan
Download or read book Tribology and Mechanics of Magnetic Storage Devices written by Bharat Bhushan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since January 1990, when the first edition ofthis first-of-a-kind book appeared, there has been much experimental and theoretical progress in the multi disciplinary subject of tribology and mechanics of magnetic storage devices. The subject has matured into a rigorous discipline, and many university tribology and mechanics courses now routinely contain material on magnetic storage devices. The major growth in the subject has been on the micro- and nanoscale aspects of tribology and mechanics. Today, most large magnetic storage industries use atomic force microscopes to image the magnetic storage components. Many companies use variations of AFMs such as friction force microscopes (FFMs) for frictional studies. These instruments have also been used for studying scratch, wear, and indentation. These studies are valuable in the fundamental understanding of interfacial phenomena. In the second edition, I have added a new chapter, Chapter 11, on micro and nanoscale aspects of tribology and mechanics of magnetic storage compo nents. This chapter presents the state of the art of the micro/nanotribology and micro/nanomechanics of magnetic storage components. In addition, typographical errors in Chapters 1 to 10 and the appendixes have been corrected. These additions update this book and make it more valuable to researchers of the subject. I am grateful to many colleagues and particularly to my students, whose work is reported in Chapter 11. I thank my wife, Sudha, who has been forbearing during the progress of the research reported in this chapter.
Book Synopsis Chemistry and Technology of Lubricants by : R. M. Mortier
Download or read book Chemistry and Technology of Lubricants written by R. M. Mortier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use oflubricants began in ancient times and has developed into a major international business through the need to lubricate machines of increasing complexity. The impetus for lubricant development has arisen from need, so lubricatingpractice has preceded an understanding ofthe scientific principles. This is not surprising as the scientific basis of the technology is, by nature, highly complex and interdisciplinary. However, we believe that the under standing of lubricant phenomena will continue to be developed at a mol ecular level to meet future challenges. These challenges will include the control of emissions from internal combustion engines, the reduction of friction and wear in machinery, and continuing improvements to lubricant performanceand life-time. More recently, there has been an increased understanding of the chemical aspects of lubrication, which has complemented the knowledge and under standing gained through studies dealing with physics and engineering. This book aims to bring together this chemical information and present it in a practical way. It is written by chemists who are authorities in the various specialisations within the lubricating industry, and is intended to be of interest to chemists who may already be working in the lubricating industry or in academia, and who are seeking a chemist's view of lubrication. It will also be of benefit to engineers and technologists familiar with the industry who require a more fundamental understanding oflubricants.
Book Synopsis Proteins as Human Food by : R. A. Lawrie
Download or read book Proteins as Human Food written by R. A. Lawrie and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proteins as Human Food is a collection of studies that discuss the importance of inclusion of protein in human diet; the problems that cause and may arise from its insufficiency; and its solutions. The book is divided into seven parts. Part I covers topics related to the world supply and demand of protein such as problems related to the surplus and deficiency of protein production; nutrition policy with regard to protein; and methods on how to meet the world's protein needs. Part II tackles the preservation of protein and processing, as well as the altering effects of toxic agents and microorganisms on protein. Parts III, IV, and V respectively deals with the different animal, plant, and other unconventional sources of protein; their properties; and quality control. Part VI talks about the organoleptic qualities of protein foods and protein problems in large-scale catering, and Part VII covers regulatory mechanism in mammalian protein metabolism; effects of disproportionate amounts of amino acids; and the evaluation of protein. The text is recommended for nutritionists and chemists who would like to know more about the advancements in the studies of protein, its relevance to diet, and the solution to problems related to it.

Book Synopsis Science and Civilisation in China, Part 7, Military Technology: The Gunpowder Epic by : Joseph Needham
Download or read book Science and Civilisation in China, Part 7, Military Technology: The Gunpowder Epic written by Joseph Needham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-01-22 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gunpowder Epic is one of three planned publications on military technology within Dr Needham's immense undertaking. The discovery of gunpowder in China by the 9th century AD was followed by its rapid applications. It is now clear that the whole development from bombs and grenades to the invention of the metal-barrel hand gun took place in the Chinese culture area before Europeans had any knowledge of the mixture itself. Uses in civil engineering and mechanical engineering were equally important, before the knowledge of gunpowder spread to Europe in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Dr Needham's new work continues to demonstrate the major importance of Chinese science and technology to world history and maintains the tradition of one of the great scholarly works of the twentieth century.
