Book excerpt: Collage Lab offers artists and crafters a fun and experimental approach to making art. The book is organized into 52 different labs which may, but don't need to be, explored on a weekly basis. The labs can be worked in any order, so that readers can flip around to learn a new mixed-media technique or be inspired by a particular collage theme or application. The underlying message of this book is that artists can and should learn and gain expertise through experimentation and play. There is no right or wrong result for a given exercise, yet readers will gain skills and confidence in collage techniques, allowing them to take their work to a new level. Collage Lab is illustrated with brilliant full-color images and multiple examples of each exercise, offers a visual, non-linear approach to learning art techniques, and reinforces a fun and fearless approach to making art.

Book excerpt: A Skills lab is a learning resource center that provides an environment for learning clinical skills where students can practise without jeopardizing patient care or provoking adverse effects. It reduces the difficulties experienced by students when they first encounter patients in clinical practice. In the skills lab students practise basic and advanced nursing skills supervised by faculty members, or at independent practice time. The designated room for skills lab should have a layout of model ward found in the hospital, accommodating various learning areas and stations according to the learning needs of the students who work in small groups under the supervision of instructors. Within the room there ought to be stations for demonstration of clinical skills by use of a simulated patient, management or task trainer and sitting area for discussion and watching projected procedures. Safety, staffing, skills lab etiquette and care of skills lab equipment is of importance.Various nursing skills are practiced using simulated patients and videos. Interactive lecture sessions, discussions, demonstration of skills, practise on manikins, case studies, presentations, videos are some of the teaching methods used. Students get the opportunity to practise independently, with students' peers, simulated patients, skills lab assistants, and with faculty members until they acquire competent skills and attitude based on the curriculum. For effective learning in skills lab the student must apply critical creative thinking skills as well as, clinical reasoning and decision making skills. Debriefing process is conducted at the end of the session to give the student time to reflect, discuss the simulation experience, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate their action. Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) is used for assessment of clinical competence in which the components of competence are assessed in a planned or structured way with attention being paid to the objectivity of the evaluation.

The exercises provide the novice with valuable information on techniques and materials combined with the confidence to explore their own intuitive creative path. For the experienced artist the exercises offer an opportunity to engage with familiar painting mediums in fresh new ways. I would recommend this book both to novice artists just starting out and established artists seeking to reinvigorate their studio practice." - Neal Walsh, Painter and Gallery Director at AS220 "Deborah Forman is a fantastic teacher. She is able to bring her myriad talents to bear in the classroom by transmitting the joy and pleasure she takes in her own artistic practice to her students, who are at many different points in their own creative journeys. She is incredibly generous with her ideas, and honors the integrity of all of her students by encouraging experimentation, tenacity, and compassion as they develop their own skills as artists." - Dr. Karen Carr, Humanities Professor, RISD "Deborah Forman's Color Theory course was inspiring, exciting and informative. She encouraged her students to push their experimentation with color to the limits which resulted in beautiful palettes that I never dreamed I could create. Overall, this class was a wonderful experience and gave me great insight as to which direction I want to take with my own artwork." - former student

Book excerpt: Art Lab for Kids is a refreshing source of wonderful ideas for creating fine art with children. This step-by-step book offers 52 fun and creative art projects set into weekly lessons, beginning with drawing, moving through painting and printmaking, and then building to paper collage and mixed media. Each lesson features and relates to the work and style of a contemporary artist and their unique style. The labs can be used as singular projects or to build up to a year of hands-on fine art experiences. Grouped by medium, the labs are set up loosely to build skills upon the previous ones; however, you can begin anywhere. Have fun exploring: drawing by creating a whimsical scene on a handmade crayon scratchboard. painting by using watercolors and salt to create a textured landscape. printmaking by using lemons, celery, mushrooms, and other produce to make colorful prints. paper by creating an expressive self-portrait using pieces of colored tissue paper. mixed media by making insects from patterned contact paper and watercolor pencils. Color photos illustrate how different people using the same lesson will yield different results, exemplifying the way the lesson brings out each artist’s personal style. Art Lab for Kids is the perfect book for creative families, friends, and community groups and works as lesson plans for both experienced and new art teachers. The popular Lab for Kids series features a growing list of books that share hands-on activities and projects on a wide host of topics, including art, astronomy, clay, geology, math, and even how to create your own circus—all authored by established experts in their fields. Each lab contains a complete materials list, clear step-by-step photographs of the process, as well as finished samples. The labs can be used as singular projects or as part of a yearlong curriculum of experiential learning. The activities are open-ended, designed to be explored over and over, often with different results. Geared toward being taught or guided by adults, they are enriching for a range of ages and skill levels. Gain firsthand knowledge on your favorite topic with Lab for Kids.
