Creationism is no longer the simple notion it once was taken to be. Its new advocates have become more sophisticated in how they present their views, speaking of "intelligent design" rather than "creation science" and aiming their arguments against the naturalistic philosophical method that underlies science, proposing to replace it with a "theistic science." The creationism controversy is not just about the status of Darwinian evolution—it is a clash of religious and philosophical worldviews, for a common underlying fear among Creationists is that evolution undermines both the basis of morality as they understand it and the possibility of purpose in life. In Tower of Babel, philosopher Robert T. Pennock compares the views of the new creationists with those of the old and reveals the insubstantiality of their arguments. One of Pennock's major innovations is to turn from biological evolution to the less charged subject of linguistic evolution, which has strong theoretical parallels with biological evolution, both in content and in the sort of evidence scientists use to draw conclusions about origins. Of course, an evolutionary view of language does conflict with the Bible, which says that God created the variety of languages at one time as punishment for the Tower of Babel. Several chapters deal with the work of Phillip Johnson, a highly influential leader of the new Creationists. Against his and other views, Pennock explains how science uses naturalism and discusses the relationship between factual and moral issues in the creationism-evolution controversy. The book also includes a discussion of Darwin's own shift from creationist to evolutionist and an extended argument for keeping private religious beliefs separate from public scientific knowledge.

Book excerpt: This dissertation is the first to propose and validate a general process by which exchange partners arrive at a shared understanding of what actions constitute (vs. defection) in changing and complex environments, thereby making cooperation possible. Achieving cooperation in the face of incentives to defect is essential in organizations and markets. Past research has focused on the payoff structure and the resulting risk of defection as a determinant of cooperative outcomes but has failed to explain how exchange partners arrive at shared understandings of what actions constitute cooperation and defection, and why exchanges featuring the same payoff structure sometimes have different cooperative outcomes. I resolve this puzzle and explain how and when exchange partners can coordinate on the meaning of cooperation. I do so by advancing and testing a theory of shared coordination frameworks -- developed through long-term exchange -- that help exchange partners reach common interpretations of cooperation when unanticipated events inevitably occur. I then provide theoretical clarification for the prevalence of long-term exchange, by demonstrating the causal primary of shared frameworks in actors' decisions to exchange with long-term partners. I validate these propositions using a novel experimental platform that is the first to manipulate participants' coordination frameworks and disentangle their effect from the risk of defection and other correlates of long-term exchange. The results indicate that shared coordination frameworks dramatically increase the likelihood of successful cooperation in complex exchanges.

This was the first time that VSMM was sited in Australia. The Australian conference theme reflected the country’s cultural heritage, both recent and past – Exchange and Experience in Space and Place. Of the many papers submitted under this theme we were able to identify three core sub-themes: Virtual Heritage, Applied Technologies and Virtual Environments. With a truly international flavor, these sub-themes covered the diverse areas of heritage site and artifact reconstruction and analysis, Australian Aboriginal cultural heritage, training, notions of spirituality, human – computer interaction in virtual environments, 3D modelling, remote collaboration and virtual agents. This made for rich, varied and lively conference session debates. Ninety-seven papers were submitted. Of these, 56 were accepted for inclusion in the general conference proceedings. Of these, 18 were further reviewed and selected for this Springer publication. The authors of these papers were invited to revise their papers following feedback from the conference before inclusion in this volume. Many people contributed to the conference. We first wish to thank the Virtual Systems and Multimedia Society, who provided strong support to the whole process of the preparation of the conference.
