In this dissertation, research is described on the mechanisms driving self-radiating forces arising from high-brightness beam environments and the mitigation of such forces. In the first half of the dissertation, we will focus on quantifying the Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) Effect for various accelerator scenarios. New expressions for the CSR RMS energy spread are developed for transient regime with and without bunch compression and for the subsequent drift section after a bend. The expressions are rigorously tested with the particle tracking codes ELEGANT and CSRTrack [14, 15]. In the latter half, we will take a particular focus on the final-stage bunch compression systems of linacs for X-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL), where these self-forces are prevalent, and introduce a new bunch compressor chicane design: the 5-Bend chicane. The new chicane's performance is compared versus a standard 4-Bend chicane in terms of emittance preservation and XFEL performance in a comprehensive simulation study. Though the work presented here pertains to the XFEL linac environment, the physics and techniques can be applied to any sort of accelerator involving high-peak current, low-emittance charged particle beams.

Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on High-Brightness Accelerators was held at the Atholl Palace Hotel, Pitlochry, Perthshire, Scotland, from July 13 through July 25, 1986. This publication is the Proceedings of the Institute. This ASI emphasized the basic physics and engineering of the rela tively new and fast-emerging field of high-brightness particle accelera tors. These machines are high- to very-high-current (amperes to hundreds of kiloamperes), modest-voltage (megavolt to tens of megavolts) devices, and as such are opposed to those historically used for high-energy physics studies (i.e., gigavolt and higher energies and rather low currents). The primary focus of the Institute was on the physics of the accelerator and the beam, including the dynamics, equilibria, and insta bilities of high-current beams near the space-charge limit; accelerator engineering techniques; and the applications of high-brightness beams in areas such as free-electron lasers, synchrotron-radiation sources, food processing, and heavy- and light-ion fusion. The Institute concentrated on bringing together several diverse but related communities which, we hope, benefited from this opportunity to interact: the North American activity in machine technology, engineer ing, and diagnostics with the strong European theoretical community; the basic beam physicists with the engineering technologists.

Book excerpt: Future accelerators will employ advanced beam conditioning systems such as emittance exchangers to manipulate high brightness beams. Coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) in the dipoles could limit the performance of the emittance exchanger. In this paper, we report the experimental studies on measuring CSR and its effects on the beam at the A0 photoinjector in the emittance exchange line. After reporting the CSR power measurements, we report on the diagnostic scheme based on a weak skew quad in the emittance exchange line to study the CSR effects on the beam and other beam dynamics. In this work, we have reported on CSR measurements and the effect of skew quad on the dogleg line with the 5-cell turned on and off. We plan to study CSR effects on the bunch with the 5-cell on at larger chirp. This is will not only increase the CSR self-effect but also reduce the beamsize at the screen for convenient beamsize measurements.

Book excerpt: Next generation accelerators will require a high current, low emittance beam with a low energy spread. Such accelerators will employ advanced beam conditioning systems such as emittance exchanger to manipulate high brightness beams. One of the goals of the Fermilab A0 photoinjector is to investigate the transverse to longitudinal emittance exchange principle. Coherent synchrotron radiation could limit high current operation of the emittance exchanger. In this paper, we report on the preliminary experimental and simulation study of the coherent synchroton radiation (CSR) in the emittance exchange line at A0 photoinjector.

Book excerpt: Specialists in the technical components of a synchrotron light source are usually well versed in their field and in the associated technical literature. However, with the rapid and continuing growth of synchrotron radiation research, and with new facilities coming online and being authorized for design and construction around the world, there is a need for a reference book that describes the various technical components of a synchrotron light source in a manner that will be useful to those who lack specialized technical background, but who have responsibility for some part of the design, construction, operation or development of such a facility. This would include technicians, engineers and physicists who have technical background in related fields but no specific experience with a synchrotron light source, and also project managers, laboratory directors, and government officials involved with synchrotron light facilities.College level scientific or engineering training or the equivalent experience is assumed and appropriate mathematics is used throughout. However, the basic concepts in each chapter are given in less technical language and a glossary of terms as well as an index will make the book useful for those with less technical training or experience.

Book excerpt: Hardly any other discovery of the nineteenth century did have such an impact on science and technology as Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s seminal find of the X-rays. X-ray tubes soon made their way as excellent instruments for numerous applications in medicine, biology, materials science and testing, chemistry and public security. Developing new radiation sources with higher brilliance and much extended spectral range resulted in stunning developments like the electron synchrotron and electron storage ring and the freeelectron laser. This handbook highlights these developments in fifty chapters. The reader is given not only an inside view of exciting science areas but also of design concepts for the most advanced light sources. The theory of synchrotron radiation and of the freeelectron laser, design examples and the technology basis are presented. The handbook presents advanced concepts like seeding and harmonic generation, the booming field of Terahertz radiation sources and upcoming brilliant light sources driven by laser-plasma accelerators. The applications of the most advanced light sources and the advent of nanobeams and fully coherent x-rays allow experiments from which scientists in the past could not even dream. Examples are the diffraction with nanometer resolution, imaging with a full 3D reconstruction of the object from a diffraction pattern, measuring the disorder in liquids with high spatial and temporal resolution. The 20th century was dedicated to the development and improvement of synchrotron light sources with an ever ongoing increase of brilliance. With ultrahigh brilliance sources, the 21st century will be the century of x-ray lasers and their applications. Thus, we are already close to the dream of condensed matter and biophysics: imaging single (macro)molecules and measuring their dynamics on the femtosecond timescale to produce movies with atomic resolution.

Book excerpt: Particle Accelerator Physics covers the dynamics of relativistic particle beams, basics of particle guidance and focusing, lattice design, characteristics of beam transport systems and circular accelerators. Particle-beam optics is treated in the linear approximation including sextupoles to correct for chromatic aberrations. Perturbations to linear beam dynamics are analyzed in detail and correction measures are discussed, while basic lattice design features and building blocks leading to the design of more complicated beam transport systems and circular accelerators are studied. Characteristics of synchrotron radiation and quantum effects due to the statistical emission of photons on particle trajectories are derived and applied to determine particle-beam parameters. The discussions specifically concentrate on relativistic particle beams and the physics of beam optics in beam transport systems and circular accelerators such as synchrotrons and storage rings. This book forms a broad basis for further, more detailed studies of nonlinear beam dynamics and associated accelerator physics problems, discussed in the subsequent volume.

Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the 1999 ICFA workshop on the physics of high brightness beams. The workshop took a snapshot in time of a fast moving, interdisciplinary field driven by advanced applications such as high gradient, high energy physics linear colliders, high gain free electron lasers, heavy ion fusion, and transmutation of nuclear materials. While the field of high brightness beam physics has traditionally been divided into disparate electron and heavy ion communities, the workshop brought the two types of researchers together, so that a sharing of insights and methods could be achieved. Thus, this book represents a unifying step in the development of the diverse fascinating discipline of high brightness beam physics, with its challenges rooted in collective, nonlinear particle motion and ultra-high electromagnetic energy density.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) is of great interest to those designing accelerators as drivers for free-electron lasers (FELs). Although experimental evidence is incomplete, CSR is predicted to have potentially severe effects on the emittance of high-brightness electron beams. The performance of an FEL depends critically on the emittance, current, and energy spread of the beam. Attempts to increase the current through magnetic bunch compression can lead to increased emittance and energy spread due to CSR in the dipoles of such a compressor. The code elegant was used for design and simulation of the bunch compressor for the Low-Energy Undulator Test Line (LEUTL) FEL at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). In order to facilitate this design, a fast algorithm was developed based on the 1-D formalism of Saldin and coworkers. In addition, a plausible method of including CSR effects in drift spaces following the chicane magnets was developed and implemented. The algorithm is fast enough to permit running hundreds of tolerance simulations including CSR for 50 thousand particles. This article describes the details of the implementation and shows results for the APS bunch compressor.

Book excerpt: In order to reach the high peak current required for an x-ray free electron laser, two separate magnetic dipole chicanes are used in the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) accelerator to compress the electron bunch length in stages. In these bunch compressors, coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) can be emitted either by a short electron bunch or by any longitudinal density modulation that may be on the bunch. In this paper, we report detailed measurements of the CSR-induced energy loss and transverse emittance growth in these compressors. Good agreement is found between the experimental results and multi-particle tracking studies. We also describe direct observations of CSR at optical wavelengths and compare with analytical models based on beam microbunching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A relativistic electron beam moving in a circular orbit in free space can radiate coherently if the wavelength of the synchrotron radiation exceeds the length of the bunch. In accelerators coherent radiation of the bunch is usually suppressed by the screening effect of the conducting walls of the vacuum chamber [1, 2]. The screening effect is weak for short wavelengths, but if the wavelength is shorter than the length of the bunch, the coherent radiation becomes exponentially small. However, if the beam density has initially a fluctuation with a characteristic length much shorter than the bunch length, this fluctuation will radiate coherently. If the radiation results in the growth of the initial fluctuation one can expect micro-bunching of the beam and an instability which leads to increased coherent radiation at short wavelengths. Experimentally self-excited coherent microwave radiation has been observed recently in NSLS VUV ring at BNL [3, 4], at the Synchrotron Ultraviolet Radiation Facility (SURF) at NIST [5], and at the Advanced Light Source at LBL [6]. A beam microwave instability induced by the coherent radiation of the density fluctuations is studied theoretically in this paper. We consider the case when CSR of a bunch as a whole is suppressed by screening and is caused by microstructures with longitudinal dimensions small compared to the bunch length. In this case, we can simplify consideration studying stability of a coasting beam with the line density equal to the local line density of the bunch.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) effect in a bending path plays an important role in transverse emittance dilution in high-brightness light sources and linear colliders, where the electron beams are of short bunch length and high peak current. Suppression of the emittance growth induced by CSR is critical to preserve the beam quality and help improve the machine performance. It has been shown that the CSR effect in a double-bend achromat (DBA) can be analyzed with the two-dimensional point-kick analysis method. In this paper, this method is applied to analyze the CSR effect in a triple-bend achromat (TBA) with symmetric layout, which is commonly used in the optics designs of energy recovery linacs (ERLs). A condition of cancelling the CSR linear effect in such a TBA is obtained, and is verified through numerical simulations. It is demonstrated that emittance preservation can be achieved with this condition, and to a large extent, has a high tolerance to the fluctuation of the initial transverse phase space distribution of the beam.

Book excerpt: Energy Recovery Linear Accelerators (ERLs) are potential drivers for novel fourth-generation synchrotron light sources. An ERL combines the high quality beams of a linear accelerator with the high currents possible in a storage ring. The excessive power needs of a lone linac are avoided by circulating accelerated particles back through the linac to recover their energy. This dissertation is focused on the lattice design of a high energy ERL synchrotron light source at Cornell University. In order to illustrate general ERL requirements, a simpler design is also presented. The mathematics needed to describe such a machine are particular to accelerator physics, and so a separate chapter is devoted to developing all of the relevant concepts. The short bunch lengths and high bunch charges possible in an ERL can give rise to Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) which can potentially limit the operation of the accelerator. CSR is a collective phenomenon where the energy radiated at wavelengths longer than the bunch length is enhanced by the number of charges in the bunch. The final chapter develops an exact model for CSR from an infinitely thin bunch. It reveals many interesting effects, including CSR at low energies, through multiple bends in a lattice, and in bunch compression. The model is also used to obtain the limits of validity of previously known approximations. Finally, CSR is examined for the ERL designs presented.

Book excerpt: The drive beam of CTF II can provide single electron bunches with charges of more than 15 nC and rms lengths of less than 0.13 mm. If the bunches are bent in the dipoles of a magnetic bunch compressor, they emit coherent synchrotron radiation with strongly enhanced intensity with respect to incoherent synchrotron radiation. Here we report on the experimental and theoretical study of the effect of this coherent radiation emission on the distribution of the electrons in the six-dimensional phase space. Transverse emittances, bunch lengths, and energy spectra were measured for constant bunch compression ratios but different horizontal beam sizes in the bunch compressor. Further, the shielding effect of the finite vacuum chamber height on the mean beam energy loss was investigated by using two vacuum chambers of different heights in a four-magnet chicane. The results are compared with simulations using TraFiC4 and ELEGANT.
