Book excerpt: In the last 25 years, one of the most striking advances in Fluid Mecha nics was certainly the discovery of coherent structures in turbulence: lab oratory experiments and numerical simulations have shown that most turbulent flows exhibit both spatially-organized large-scale structures and disorganized motions, generally at smaller scales. The develop ment of new measurement and visualization techniques have allowed a more precise characterization and investigation of these structures in the laboratory. Thanks to the unprecedented increase of computer power and to the development of efficient interactive three-dimensional colour graphics, computational fluid dynamicists can explore the still myste rious world of turbulence. However, many problems remain unsolved concerning the origin of these structures, their dynamics, and their in teraction with the disorganized motions. In this book will be found the latest results of experimentalists, theoreticians and numerical modellers interested in these topics. These coherent structures may appear on airplane wings or slender bodies, mixing layers, jets, wakes or boundary-layers. In free-shear flows and in boundary layers, the results presented here highlight the intense three-dimensional character of the vortices. The two-dimensional large scale eddies are very sensitive to three-dimensional perturbations, whose amplification leads to the formation of three-dimensional coherent vorti cal structures, such as streamwise, hairpin or horseshoe vortex filaments. This book focuses on modern aspects of turbulence study. Relations between turbulence theory and optimal control theory in mathematics are discussed. This may have important applications with regard to, e. g. , numerical weather forecasting.

Book excerpt: This project combines both experimental video flow visualization studies and theoretical investigations of a series of phenomenological and theoretical models based upon the three-dimensional details of convected, coherent structural elements of a turbulent flow as it interacts with a solid surface. The progress over the past year has led to the experimental consideration of range of sub-problems including high Reynolds Number (4,000,000) turbulent flows, the effect of surface modification on low-speed streak formation, and the effect of vortex loop interaction with a solid boundary. To augment the visualization pictures, a computerized video-digitizing system has been developed. Preliminary results show tremendous promise for obtaining quantitative data from flow visualization pictures. The specific thrust of the theoretical studies has been focussed on three areas: (1) how two- and three-dimensional vortex structures interact with wall boundary layers, (2) the development of a new type of prediction method for two-dimensional turbulent boundary-layer flows, and (3) improvement in numerical techniques for solving parabolic, boundary-layer equations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains contributions by former students, colleagues and friends of Professor John L. Lumley, on the occasion of his 60th birthday, in recognition of his enormous impact on the advancement of turbulence research. A variety of experimental, computational and theoretical topics, including turbulence modeling, direct numerical simulations, compressible turbulence, turbulent shear flows, coherent structures and the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition are contained herein. The diversity and scope of these contributions are further acknowledgment of John Lumley's wide ranging influence in the field of turbulence. The large number of contributions by the authors, many of whom were participants in The Lumley Symposium: Recent Developments in Turbulence (held at ICASE, NASA Langley Research Center on November 12 & 13, 1990), has presented us with the unique opportu nity to select a few numerical and theoretical papers for inclusion in the journal Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics for which Professor Lumley serves as Editor. Extended Abstracts of these pa pers are included in this volume and are appropriately marked. The special issue of TCFD will appear this year and will serve as an additional tribute to John Lumley. As is usually the case, the efforts of others have significantly eased our tasks. We would like to express our deep appreciation to Drs. R.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides an original approach in the research of structural analysis of free developed shear compressible turbulence at high Reynolds number on the base of direct numerical simulation (DNS) and instability evolution for ideal medium (integral conservation laws) with approximate mechanism of dissipation (FLUX dissipative monotone ?upwind? difference schemes) and does not use any explicit sub-grid approximation and semi-empirical models of turbulence. Convective mixing is considered as a principal part of conservation law.Appropriate hydrodynamic instabilities (free developed shear turbulence) are investigated from unique point of view. It is based on the concept of large ordered structures with stochastic core of small scale developed turbulence (?turbulent spot?). Decay of ?turbulent spot? are simulated by Monte Carlo method. Proposed approach is based on two hypotheses: statistical independence of the characteristic of large ordered structures (LOS) and small-scale turbulence (ST) ?and? weak influence of molecular viscosity (or more generally, dissipative mechanism) on properties of large ordered structures. Two versions of instabilities, due to Rayleigh-Taylor and Richtmyer-Meshkov are studied detail by the three-dimensional calculations, extended to the large temporal intervals, up to turbulent stage and investigation turbulent mixing zone (TMZ).The book covers both the fundamental and practical aspects of turbulence and instability and summarizes the result of numerical experiments conducted over 30 years period with direct participation of the author. In the book are cited the opinions of the leading scientists in this area of research: Acad. A S Monin (Russia), Prof. Y Nakamura (Japan, Nagoya University) and Prof. F Harlow (USA, Los-Alamos).
Book Synopsis Coherent Structures and Wall-pressure Fluctuations Modeling in Turbulent Boundary Layers Subjected to Pressure Gradients by : Miloud Alaoui

This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flow around vehicles creates a turbulent boundary layer in the vicinity of the wall. The turbulent behavior induces pressure fluctuations that make the panels vibrate. These vibrations are then transmitted though the structure of the vehicle and radiate noise inside the cabin. The flow-induced noise levels increase with the speed of the vehicle. For this reason, aircraft manufacturers show a great interest in this topic. There are two objectives for this thesis: understand the mechanisms responsible for the wall-pressure fluctuations and predict this source of aircraft panel excitation.A study of available Large Eddy Simulation (LES) computations was performed. The database consists in simulations of turbulent boundary layer flows submitted to favorable, adverse and zero pressure gradients. This is necessary to understand the nature of the flow over curved geometries such as the aircraft flight deck. The effect of pressure gradients on coherent hairpin structures and hairpin packets could be identified and quantified based on visualization and statistical analysis methods. Linear stochastic estimation of the velocity fields revealed a pair of counter-rotating streamwise vortices above hairpin packets. These vortices have a vorticity opposite to that of the hairpins and an “inverse hairpin” model was proposed.Following the work of Ahn et al. (2010), a stochastic model for wall-pressure spectrum was developed. The idea is to build a stochastic turbulent velocity field using hairpin packets which are subjected to a mean flow. The characteristics of the packets depending on the pressure gradient are based on the analyses of the LES database. The pressure field at the wall is obtained by solving a Poisson equation. The results of the hairpin packet model are compared to numerical and experimental data. Finally, the model is used as input for a Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) simulation in order to predict the levels of vibrations of panels submitted to a turbulent boundary layer flow over a portion of an aircraft cabin.
Book Synopsis Coherent Structures in Turbulent Boundary Layers by : R. E. Falco
Download or read book Coherent Structures in Turbulent Boundary Layers written by R. E. Falco and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental investigations to determine the characteristics of the important coherent motions in turbulent boundary layers have been performed. Using simultaneous flow visualization and hot-wire anemometry, all motions have been detected and simultaneously quantified. Two coherent motions, one in the outer region and one in the wall region are important in the Reynolds number range R0 less than 4000. The important outer region eddy is a vortex ring like microscale eddy. (Author).
