Book excerpt: Indonesia has been remarkably successful in achieving its development objectives over the past 25 years. Although it is still a low-income country, its tradition of sound economic management has laid the foundations for continued progress in the decades ahead. As the Indonesian government formulates its second long-term development plan, issues of environmental quality and sustainability raise new concerns. This report examines environmental issues, assesses their implications for the achievement of development goals, and suggests an action plan that would help to ensure that those goals will be met. The analysis of current environmental conditions and trends and of the likely impact of future growth leads to three main conclusions: - Future growth will depend increasingly on Indonesia's stock of key natural resources and the sustainability of critical ecosystems. -The industrial sector will continue to expand in urban areas, where growing congestion and industrial pollution pose an immediate threat to health and human welfare. This will eventually lead to negative effects on the economy. -As a result of rapid growth, environment- related issues of equity among the population will become increasingly important.

Book excerpt: Located between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and between the Asian and Australian continents, the seas of the Indonesian Archipelago have a significant role in global weather patterns and oceanic circulation. The dynamic interplay between geological, physical, chemical, and biological processes, past and present, has given rise to one of the most diverse marine regions on the planet. Using maps and numerous illustrations, This text describes the complex coastal and marine ecosystems of the region in detail. Discussion of development, resource use and ecologically sustainable management plans is also incorporated.

Book excerpt: The Ecology of the Indonesian Seas distills for the first time the information found in thousands of scholarly works relevant to an understanding of the sustainable use of marine and coastal resources in these islands&8212;many of them available up to now only in Dutch, German or Indonesian. It is an invaluable tool for government planners, resource managers, ecologists, university students, scuba divers, and all those with an interest in the sea. The second volume discusses the origins, formation and distribution of various reef types in the Indonesian Archipelago, and provides new estimates on their extent. The second volume also provides a review of the ecology of Indonesian seagrass, mangrove and open-ocean ecosystems. The chapter on marine biodiversity focuses on a number of marine and coastal habitats and threatened marine organisms. The final two chapters discuss what recent effects the human race has had on marine resources, and what we can do to protect and preserve our marine and coastal zones for generations to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oceanography and Marine Biology: An Annual Review remains one of the most cited sources in marine science and oceanography. The ever-increasing interest in work in oceanography and marine biology and its relevance to global environmental issues, especially global climate change and its impacts, creates a demand for authoritative refereed reviews summarizing and synthesizing the results of recent research. For more than 50 years, OMBAR has been an essential reference for research workers and students in all fields of marine science. If you are interested in submitting a review for consideration for publication in OMBAR, please email the Editor in Chief, Stephen Hawkins, at [email protected]. This volume considers such diverse topics as optimal design for ecosystem-level ocean observatories, the oceanography and ecology of Ningaloo, human pressures and the emergence of novel marine ecosystems and priority species to support the functional integrity of coral reefs. Six of the nine peer-reviewed contributions in Volume 58 are available to read Open Access via the links on the Routledge.com webpage. An international Editorial Board ensures global relevance and expert peer review, with editors from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Singapore, South Africa and the United Kingdom. This book was released on 2018-06-14 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Law, grade: 1.0, University of Botswana, language: English, abstract: This is essentially a study within the realm of the international law of the sea. It critically examines and assesses the efficacy of the existing legal and institutional framework regarding the implementation of the United Nations Law of the Sea Convention (the LOS Convention) and the management of the marine affairs of Botswana. It briefly explores the historical development of the LOS Convention with respect to Botswana as a land-locked State party, assesses the extent to which it has implemented the provisions of the LOS Convention. It is the argument of this study that Botswana needs an effective institutional and legislative framework if it is to realise the benefits that accrue by virtue of the LOS Convention. In Chapter One, we undertake the analytical focus and set out the theoretical basis of the study. This chapter contains the statement of the study problem, the hypotheses, methodology, the objects of the research and the literature review of the pertinent legal works. Under literature review, we have analysed not only the general literature on the substantive aspects of the law of the sea, but have also examined those dealing with marine policy issues. Chapter Two delves into the critical question of access to and from the sea for land-locked States under the law of the sea. In this chapter, we have looked at the relationship between Botswana with its coastal neighbouring States, within the context of the SADC arrangements in place. The exclusive economic zone (EEZ) is dealt with under Chapter Three. The question of access by Botswana to the living resources of the foreign EEZ in the region is dealt with. The raison d’etre for the involvement in the zone is set out and the need for an appropriate institutional framework is underscored. In Chapter Four, the very crucial issue of the deep sea-bed mining is dealt with. We have examined the sea-bed mining regime as established under LOS Convention and the subsequent 1994 Agreement relating to the implementation of Part XI of LOS Convention. Particular attention has been given to the rights of land-locked States in this area, and the prospects and limitations within the seabed area as they apply to Botswana. Chapter Five is devoted to analysis of various marine policy issues and the consideration of appropriate legislative and institutional framework for maritime matters of Botswana. Conclusions of the study and the appropriate Recommendations are contained in Chapter Six.
