Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written expressly for you who are coaching children in softball. We stress how to teach children this fun game and to have fun doing it. The book covers all facets of the game from “how to” throw a ball to strategies and tactics. When coaching children it should be a fun experience for everyone, for you, for the parents, and for the children. As a coach, we cover the teaching attitude and methods. We always keep in mind that the game is for the children and not for the adults. Winning isn't everything, but learning to play well and wanting to win is. We take the children from kindergarten through the eighth grades and break them into four categories. In each category we discuss the players needs and abilities, what they are capable of in both the physical and emotional sense, and their limitations. We have also defined the coach’s role, the parent’s role and the player’s role.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern day youth sports environment has taken the enjoyment out of athletics for our children. Currently, 70% of kids drop out of organized sports by the age of 13, which has given rise to a generation of overweight, unhealthy young adults. There is a solution. John O’Sullivan shares the secrets of the coaches and parents who have not only raised elite athletes, but have done so by creating an environment that promotes positive core values and teaches life lessons instead of focusing on wins and losses, scholarships, and professional aspirations. Changing the Game gives adults a new paradigm and a game plan for raising happy, high performing children, and provides a national call to action to return youth sports to our kids.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colorado Women is the first full-length chronicle of the lives, roles, and contributions of women in Colorado from prehistory through the modern day. A national leader in women's rights, Colorado was one of the first states to approve suffrage and the first to elect a woman to its legislature. Nevertheless, only a small fraction of the literature on Colorado history is devoted to women and, of those, most focus on well-known individuals. The experiences of Colorado women differed greatly across economic, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. Marital status, religious affiliation, and sexual orientation colored their worlds and others' perceptions and expectations of them. Each chapter addresses the everyday lives of women in a certain period, placing them in historical context, and is followed by vignettes on women's organizations and notable individuals of the time. Native American, Hispanic, African American, Asian and Anglo women's stories hail from across the state--from the Eastern Plains to the Front Range to the Western Slope--and in their telling a more complete history of Colorado emerges. Colorado Women makes a significant contribution to the discussion of women's presence in Colorado that will be of interest to historians, students, and the general reader interested in Colorado, women's and western history.

She only used when one of her other personalities was in control. Upon release, Marina's counselor referred her to Esther Laird, a therapist who specialized in dissociative identity disorder. With Esther's guidance, Marina began to process the ritualistic abuse that had permeated her childhood, and she grew more adept at communicating with the alternate personalities that had arisen to help her cope with it. But getting all of her "parts" to work in harmony became urgent when a former abuser went missing—abducted by one of her alters. Providing insight into a poorly understood and very real condition, Sum of Her Parts tells the gripping story of a survivor who learns to take the reins of her own mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This perceptive, lively study explores U.S. women's sport through historical "points of change": particular products or trends that dramatically influenced both women's participation in sport and cultural responses to women athletes. Beginning with the seemingly innocent ponytail, the subject of the Introduction, scholar Jaime Schultz challenges the reader to look at the historical and sociological significance of now-common items such as sports bras and tampons and ideas such as sex testing and competitive cheerleading. Tennis wear, tampons, and sports bras all facilitated women’s participation in physical culture, while physical educators, the aesthetic fitness movement, and Title IX encouraged women to challenge (or confront) policy, financial, and cultural obstacles. While some of these points of change increased women's physical freedom and sporting participation, they also posed challenges. Tampons encouraged menstrual shame, sex testing (a tool never used with male athletes) perpetuated narrowly-defined cultural norms of femininity, and the late-twentieth-century aesthetic fitness movement fed into an unrealistic beauty ideal. Ultimately, Schultz finds that U.S. women's sport has progressed significantly but ambivalently. Although participation in sports is no longer uncommon for girls and women, Schultz argues that these "points of change" have contributed to a complex matrix of gender differentiation that marks the female athletic body as different than--as less than--the male body, despite the advantages it may confer.

Book excerpt: Around the Cul-de-sac is a short story collection that charts the inner workings of Sydney Lagunilla, a kid growing up in the ‘90s who views trespassing on her neighbors’ properties as doing them a favor. In this work of realistic fiction, the Central Florida native finds a way to skirt a standardized test worksheet, and in an above-ground pool, acts out the farewell floating door scene in Titanic. Sydney’s ruling passions undergo rapid shifts, occupying her time with rowboat adventures or whatever sport features in the latest (now nostalgic) family comedy. She could be catching lizards one moment, then staging a performance of the 1996 Grammy Nominees album in the next. The 16 stories are magnetic and will leave readers bemused through seriously funny and honest narration. This is the debut short stories collection by emerging humor writer Christina De Paris.
