Book excerpt: Fifteen-year-old Jamelle Bonet is the daughter of a wealthy, French-born wine merchant living in England in 1619. When her father is executed for treason and stripped of his possessions, Jamelle must flee the country manor of her childhood and leave behind the trappings of her privileged upbringing. Her father's accuser makes a violent attempt to seduce her. With the aid of handsome Brent Foster, the penniless nephew of Lord Phillip Wagram, Jamelle resists. Her attacker is unexpectedly killed, throwing the lives of both young people into chaos. Brent flees to Virginia while Jamelle struggles in London's seamy underworld, still pining for Brent, who does not answer her letters. When a sum left secretly by her father comes into her hands, she sails for Virginia, ignoring qualms about Brent Foster as well as rumors about the hardships of Colony life. The reality is every bit as daunting as the rumors, but Jamelle is not one to quit Jamestown easily. She marries, gives birth to a daughter and is at her husband's side on Theden Hundred when Indian tribes launch a surprise attack. Little survives, but Jamelle finds love from an unexpected source and the courage to go on.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete five book series of City Shifters: the Den! Find out if Barrett Kaiser and his rowdy bear brothers survive the bad guys, wreak some vengeance, and find true love! Bearing Burdens: Josie just needs enough money to pay off her loan shark and get custody of her nieces and nephew. But when she saves Kaiser's life, she discovers a whole world of shifters exists in the city -- and her dead sister might have been involved in it. Josie has to decide whether to risk everything she loves to stay with Kaiser, including her own life and humanity, or shoulder her burdens on her own yet again. Bearing Hearts: Lucy Randall couldn't save her partner, Ragnar, when their mission against a rogue wolf-pack went bad, but she can finish the job and at least honor Ragnar's memory by killing the men who ambushed him. Reaching the investigator who hired her seems easy enough -- until she runs into a man with Ragnar's face and twice as much attitude. Can they avenge Ragnar's death and get one step closer to destroying the rogue wolf-pack, or will their hearts grow too heavy to bear? Bearing Scars: Kara flees a rogue pack to save her own life, but knows she has to go back to save her brother. When the rogue wolves chase her, though, Kara faces a lonely death in the woods -- until an enormous bear shifter races in to save her. Owen is everything she needs, and as he deals with his own scars, Kara discovers he needs her more. But when the rogue pack demands a trade that endangers Kara, her brother, and most of the bears, how far will Kara go to save her brother? And how much will Owen sacrifice to protect her? Bearing Demons: Greer O’Brien has seen all kinds of tragedy as a homicide detective, and she’s witnessed her fair share as a banshee, too. When she finds a dying man, the banshee sings his death-song – except the handsome shifter doesn’t stay dead. Greer isn’t ready for Malcolm MacNevin to disrupt her solitary life, and she certainly isn’t ready for him to kidnap her. When Malcolm's little sister disappears into the city's underworld, Greer walks a fine line between her oath as a detective and her growing feelings for Malcolm. She’ll even face off with Russian mobsters, crazy fae overlords, and a rogue pack to save Malcolm’s sister. But will that be enough to save Malcolm from his demons? Bearing Secrets: Sunshine Wilkes runs a shelter and escape route for women with nasty husbands. She handles whatever the world throws at her... until she rescues a crazy pregnant lady raving about werewolves and carrying a little boy with a puppy tail. She's in over her head in a magical world she didn't know existed. So when a detective pal recommends a gorgeous Russian thug as a bodyguard, Sunny doesn't mind at all. She can handle a guy with a dodgy past -- even him being a werebear is something she can come around to. But when her relationship with Sasha makes Sunny the target of an evil wolf pack and Russian mobsters, she starts to think some of his secrets are too dark to survive. Will Sasha's secrets ruin his future with Sunny, or will he finally break free of the past?

Book Synopsis The Difference Electron Nanoscope by : Werner Lottermoser
Download or read book The Difference Electron Nanoscope written by Werner Lottermoser and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the difference electron nanoscope (DEN), whose principles have been invented and realised by the book author. The DEN is based on a smart combination of diffractometric and spectroscopic data and uses a visualisation of three-dimensional difference electron densities (in our case stemming from 3d orbitals) in order to obtain the key quantity involved, the electric field gradient (efg). However, the DEN is no machine, as the title of the book might infer. It is a computer program running on a fast computer system displaying 3D difference electron hyperareas floating in space and the relevant efg as a wire frame model within the unit cell of the sample involved. In this sense, it acts on a sub-nanometer scale (hence the term "nanoscope") and generates images of uncompared symmetrical and physical evidence—and beauty. For the first time, diffractometry and spectroscopy have been integrated for the common synergetic effects that may contribute to a better understanding of electric and magnetic interactions in a crystal. The experimental derivation of the common quantity, the efg, is not confined to iron-containing samples, as the use of Mössbauer spectroscopy might infer, but can also be determined by nuclear quadrupole resonance that is not confined to special nuclides. Hence, the DEN can be applied to a huge multitude of scientifically interesting specimens since the main method involved, diffractometry in a wide sense, has no general limitations at all. So it is a rather universal method, and the monograph might contribute to a wide distribution of the method in the scientific world. Has anyone seen a real orbital before: a real orbital distribution in a crystal unit cell together with its efg tensor ellipsoid? In this book, one can see it.
Book Synopsis A Cloud in the Shape of a Girl by : Jean Thompson
Download or read book A Cloud in the Shape of a Girl written by Jean Thompson and published by S&S/ Marysue Rucci Books. This book was released on 2019-10-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From National Book Award finalist and the New York Times bestselling author of The Year We Left Home comes a “powerful, beautifully crafted” (People) family saga about three generations of women who struggle to find freedom and happiness in their small Midwestern college town. A Cloud in the Shape of a Girl is a poignant novel about three generations of the Wise family—Evelyn, Laura, and Grace—as they hunt for contentment amid chaos of their own making. We see these women and their trials, small and large: social slights and heartbreaks; marital disappointments and infidelities; familial dysfunction; mortality. Spanning from World War II to the present, Thompson reveals a matrilineal love story that is so perfectly grounded in our time—a story of three women regressing, stalling, and yes, evolving, over decades. One of the burning questions she asks is: by serving her family, is a woman destined to repeat the mistakes of previous generations, or can she transcend the expectations of a place, and a time? Can she truly be free? Evelyn, Laura, and Grace are the glue that binds their family together. Tethered to their small Midwestern town—by choice or chance—Jean Thompson seamlessly weaves together the stories of the Wise women with humanity and elegance, through their heartbreaks, setbacks, triumphs, and tragedies. “Thompson’s new novel draws the reader in with character and plot…but what ultimately holds the reader enthralled is…her ability to capture the nuance of individual moments, thoughts, and reactions. No one writing today is better at this…[an] extraordinary novel” (Washington Independent Review of Books).
