Book Synopsis A Fashionable Century by : Rachel Silberstein
Download or read book A Fashionable Century written by Rachel Silberstein and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clothing and accessories from nineteenth-century China reveal much about women’s participation in the commercialization of textile handicrafts and the flourishing of urban popular culture. Focusing on women’s work and fashion, A Fashionable Century presents an array of visually compelling clothing and accessories neglected by traditional histories of Chinese dress, examining these products’ potential to illuminate issues of gender and identity. In the late Qing, the expansion of production systems and market economies transformed the Chinese fashion system, widening access to fashionable techniques, materials, and imagery. Challenging the conventional production model, in which women embroidered items at home, Silberstein sets fashion within a process of commercialization that created networks of urban guilds, commercial workshops, and subcontracted female workers. These networks gave rise to new trends influenced by performance and prints, and they offered women opportunities to participate in fashion and contribute to local economies and cultures. Rachel Silberstein draws on vernacular and commercial sources, rather than on the official and imperial texts prevalent in Chinese dress history, to demonstrate that in these fascinating objects—regulated by market desires, rather than imperial edict—fashion formed at the intersection of commerce and culture. A Fashionable Century is the winner of the Costume Society of America's Millia Davenport Publication Award and was long-listed for the Textile Society of America's R. L. Shep Award. The judges described the book as "an extraordinary achievement in scholarship working with source materials that are little-known outside of China and not otherwise available in English."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume on radical dress reforms in East Asia takes a fresh look at the symbols and languages of modernity in dress and body. Dress reform movements around the turn of the twentieth century in the region have received little critical attention as a multicultural discourse of labor, body, gender identity, colonialism, and government authority. With contributions by leading experts of costume/textile history of China, Korea, and Japan, this book presents up-to-date scholarship using diverse methodologies in costume history, history of consumption, and international trade. Thematically organized into sections exploring the garments and uniforms, accessories, fabrics, and fashion styles of Asia, this edited volume offers case studies for students and scholars in an ever-expanding field of material culture including, but not limited to, economic history, visual culture, art history, history of journalism, and popular culture. Fashion, Identity, and Power in Modern Asia stimulates further research on the impact of modernity and imperialism in neglected areas such as military uniform, school uniform, women’s accessories, hairstyles, and textile trade.
Book Synopsis If Mayors Ruled the World by : Benjamin R. Barber

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the face of the most perilous challenges of our time--climate change, terrorism, poverty, and trafficking of drugs, guns, and people--the nations of the world seem paralyzed. The problems are too big for governments to deal with. Benjamin Barber contends that cities, and the mayors who run them, can do and are doing a better job than nations. He cites the unique qualities cities worldwide share: pragmatism, civic trust, participation, indifference to borders and sovereignty, and a democratic penchant for networking, creativity, innovation, and cooperation. He demonstrates how city mayors, singly and jointly, are responding to transnational problems more effectively than nation-states mired in ideological infighting and sovereign rivalries. The book features profiles of a dozen mayors around the world, making a persuasive case that the city is democracy's best hope in a globalizing world, and that great mayors are already proving that this is so"--

Book Synopsis How They Rule the World by : Pedro Baños
Download or read book How They Rule the World written by Pedro Baños and published by Random House. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *The International Bestseller* Is there anything more cut-throat than global politics? Wherever you turn – Europe, Russia, China, Korea, Syria, the Middle East – we are living in a time of global geopolitical power plays. Once an insider to this closed world, Pedro Banos reveals that however it might be smoothed over by the PR of political diplomacy, the world of geopolitics is one of war and conflict by strategic means, where countries have sought dominion and power over their rivals since the dawn of time. Banos presents this high-stakes game as a series of 22 universal rules on how to act and exert influence in the international sphere. Each principle is contextualised in both classical and modern history, from Bismarck to Kissinger, but also related to the current world of Trump, Putin and Xi Jinping. With titles like ‘Kicking Away the Ladder’, ‘The Tower of Champagne Glasses’, ‘The Madman’, and ‘The Mule and the Saddlebags’, How They Rule the World is a practical set of rules for engagement that can be enjoyed by anyone. Written with the philosophic, aphoristic timelessness of a von Bulow, Sun Tzu or Machiavelli, Banos has created an utterly gripping manual on the secrets of how strategic power really works.
