Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the emergence of clinical sleep medicine marked by the establishment of the harbinger Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic in the mid 1970s, offspring sleep dis- ders clinics and centers have grown exponentially with the recognition of the unmet diagnostic and treatment needs of the reservoir of patients suffering from sy- toms of what are now recognized and classi?ed as the nosology of human sleep disorders. Important in the growing armamentarium of treatment options for the sleep practitioner are both traditional and newer pharmacological agents, including over-the-counter, non-traditional, and prescription types, that are all used to treat, sometimes adjunctively, most clinically recognized sleep disorders. Although there are numerous academic treatises and reviews dealing with in- vidual treatment alternatives for the diversity of recognized sleep disorders, no one comprehensive resource, extant, has dealt with pharmacological treatment options and strategies for the major human sleep disorders associated with a panoply of symptomatic conditions. The present volume and its series of chapters individually focusing on a range of human conditions, from pediatric sleep disorders to sle- relateddisordersofindividualssufferingfromAlzheimer’sdementia, uniquelycover the wide range of human medical conditions amenable to thoughtfully sleep-related applied drug therapy. The Editors have brought together a superb group of internationally respected sleep clinicians, and researchers, that provide state-of-the-art analysis of the current basic and clinical perspective regarding the most common sleep disorders that are amenable to pharmacological treatment. In each chapter the authors outline a th- oughhistoricalbackgroundoftheparticulardisorderandreviewthebasicpre-clinical studies leading to current treatment options.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The importance of sleep for well-being and general and mental health is increasingly being recognized. Sleep complaints are commonly associated with mental disorders and are even part of the diagnostic criteria for some of them, such as mood and anxiety disorders and PTSD. The relationship between sleep and psychiatric disorders is intertwined and, in some cases, bidirectional. Anxiety, psychosis, and depression often result in reduced sleep quality (sleep fragmentation, experience of unpleasant, unrefreshing sleep), quantity (increased or reduced), or pattern (changes in sleep schedule, loss of sleep consistency). Reciprocally, sleep disorders can contribute to the exacerbation of psychiatric symptoms and independently affect the prognosis. Finally, most psychotropic drugs have an effect on sleep and arousal and can aggravate a preexisting sleep abnormality. This book aims to familiarize readers with current knowledge on the mutual effects of sleep and mental health and provide an integrated framework for students, clinicians, and researchers. Throughout its 18 chapters, it discusses the six main categories of sleep disorders: insomnia (Chapters 3-5), hypersomnia (Chapters 6-7), sleep-disordered breathing (Chapters 8-11), circadian disorders (Chapters 12-13), parasomnias (Chapters 14-16), and sleep-related movement disorders (Chapters 17-18)"--

Book excerpt: Sleep dysfunction is one of the primary symptoms reported by patients with psychiatric disorders, and specifically those suffering from anxiety and depressive disorders. Conversely, primary insomnia and other sleep disorders produce symptoms of mood disturbance that are quite similar to those reported by patients with psychiatric disorders. Because of this overlap in the symptoms and treatments for insomnias and psychiatric disorders, it is important for clinicians to be able to accurately identify the root cause of sleep dysfunction in individual patients in order to optimize treatment. Part of the Oxford Psychiatry Library series, Sleep Disorders provides clinicians with an overview of current understanding of sleep physiology, the pathophysiology of sleep disturbance, and the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. This second edition includes new sections covering sleep problems in children, sleep in the elderly, and sleep in pregnancy and menopause, as well as new algorithms from the British Association of Psychopharmacology's (BAP's) new Consensus Guidelines on the management of sleep disorders.

Book excerpt: The orexin system, discovered in 1998, has emerged as a crucial player in regulating the sleep and wake balance inside our brain. This discovery has sparked a burst of novel and dynamic research on the physiology and pathology of sleep. The Orexin System: Basic Science and Role in Sleep Pathology honors this research and the authors share their ideas and perspectives on the novel developments within the field. The book examines the intricate role of the orexin system in regulating sleep and wake, and its interaction with other wake-regulating systems. The orexin system is dissected at the cellular and molecular level to explore the diversity of the orexin-producing neurons, their projections, and their signaling pathways. Additionally, the book discusses the diseases which are associated with a dysfunctional orexin system, such as narcolepsy, insomnia, substance abuse, and Alzheimer’s disease, and explores the new potential therapeutic applications derived from the burst of research around this fascinating system. This publication is essential reading for neurobiologists, neurologists, psychopharmacologists, sleep researchers, and other researchers and clinical scientists interested in sleep, sleep research, insomnia, and medicine in general.

Book excerpt: Hypnos (the Greek god of sleep) and Thanatos (death) were the twin sons of Nyx, the goddess of night (Fox, 1964). Hypnos lived in a dusky valley in the land of the Cimerians, watered by Lethe, the river of forgetfulness. He brought sleep to both men and gods, and sometimes sent his sons Morpheus, Icelus, and Phantasus to appear in dreams. At the door of his abode grew poppies and other herbs which induce sleep (Hamilton, 1961). This book deals with these herbs and their subsequent imitations. Before launching into an examination of hypnotics, it might be well to comment briefly on the manner in which this was written, and to acknowledge the help of a number of individuals. My intention was that this be useful not only for the physician or scientist, but also for the student. Thus each chapter contains an introductory section which pro vides background material. Chapter 3, for instance, describes the general principles of drug absorption, distribution, and metabolism before dis cussing the pharmacologic properties of each hypnotic. In addition, each chapter concludes with a section which summarizes the main issues.
