Book excerpt: This book constitutes revised selected papers from the Third International Workshop on Clinical Image-Based Procedures, CLIP 2014, held in conjunction with MICCAI 2014 in Boston, MA, USA, in September 2014. The 19 papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 26 submissions. New strategies are essential to ensure a smooth and effective translation of computational image-based techniques into the clinic. For these reasons CLIP 2014’s major focus is on translational research filling the gaps between basic science and clinical applications. A highlight of the workshop is the subject of strategies for personalized medicine to enhance diagnosis, treatment and interventions. Authors are encouraged to submit work centered on specific clinical applications, including techniques and procedures based on comprehensive clinical image data. Submissions related to applications already in use and evaluated by clinical users are particularly encouraged. The event will bring together world-class specialists to present ways to strengthen links between computer scientists and engineers, and clinicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years the use of medical imaging has increased exponentially in routine clinical practice. This has been reflected in a rapidly increasing use of medical imaging in clinical trials, through all phases. More recently this has culminated in a number of inter-disciplinary meetings with the various stake holders, including the FDA. Changes in the regulatory process has resulted, when it comes to the submission of data to the FDA, in a therapeutic agent where one or more of the trial end-points is the assessment of a radiological end-point. No longer is it sufficient to have the images read by the local investigator site. The FDA has also identified Medical Imaging as one of the key 6 points in the Critical Path initiative which was launched in 2004. This puts a keen focus on the role of imaging and the need to clearly identify and understand this aspect of clinical trials. As the pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device industry continues to identify ways to improve and speed up product development, medical imaging plays a more significant role. An understanding of the methodology and the metrics is therefore required but difficult to ascertain in one easy to read volume for individuals entering this field. This book will therefore fulfill this void, be it for the pharmaceutical personnel from medical director to monitor, or the Principal Investigator who is having to understand the complexities of the imaging and why it is having to be sent off-site for a 'central read.'

Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough overview of the ongoing evolution in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) within healthcare and radiology, enabling readers to gain a deeper insight into the technological background of AI and the impacts of new and emerging technologies on medical imaging. After an introduction on game changers in radiology, such as deep learning technology, the technological evolution of AI in computing science and medical image computing is described, with explanation of basic principles and the types and subtypes of AI. Subsequent sections address the use of imaging biomarkers, the development and validation of AI applications, and various aspects and issues relating to the growing role of big data in radiology. Diverse real-life clinical applications of AI are then outlined for different body parts, demonstrating their ability to add value to daily radiology practices. The concluding section focuses on the impact of AI on radiology and the implications for radiologists, for example with respect to training. Written by radiologists and IT professionals, the book will be of high value for radiologists, medical/clinical physicists, IT specialists, and imaging informatics professionals.

Book excerpt: Image synthesis across and within medical imaging modalities is an active area of research with broad applications in radiology and radiation oncology. This book covers the principles and methods of medical image synthesis, along with state-of-the-art research. First, various traditional non-learning-based, traditional machine-learning-based, and recent deep-learning-based medical image synthesis methods are reviewed. Second, specific applications of different inter- and intra-modality image synthesis tasks and of synthetic image-aided segmentation and registration are introduced and summarized, listing and highlighting the proposed methods, study designs, and reported performances with the related clinical applications of representative studies. Third, the clinical usages of medical image synthesis, such as treatment planning and image-guided adaptive radiotherapy, are discussed. Last, the limitations and current challenges of various medical synthesis applications are explored, along with future trends and potential solutions to solve these difficulties. The benefits of medical image synthesis have sparked growing interest in a number of advanced clinical applications, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-only radiation therapy treatment planning and positron emission tomography (PET)/MRI scanning. This book will be a comprehensive and exciting resource for undergraduates, graduates, researchers, and practitioners.

Book excerpt: Handbook for Clinical Trials of Imaging and Image-Guided Interventions is the first single-source, multi-disciplinary reference, based on the didactic sessions presented at the annual ‘Clinical Trials Methodology Workshop’ for radiologists, radiation oncologists and imaging scientists (sponsored by the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA)). It focuses on educating radiologists, radiation oncologists and those involved in imaging research with how to design and conduct clinical trials to evaluate imaging technology and imaging biomarkers. The internationally renowned contributors take a broad approach, starting with principles of technology assessment, and then move into specific topics covering the clinical trials of therapy and clinical research in imaging guided interventions including radiotherapy. They discuss the use of imaging as a predictor of therapeutic response, screening trial design, and the practicalities of how to run an efficient clinical trial and good working practices. Later chapters provide a comprehensive array of quantitative methods including: an introduction to statistical considerations in study design, biostatistical analysis methods and their role in clinical imaging research, methods for quantitative imaging biomarker studies, and an introduction to cost effectiveness analysis. Handbook for Clinical Trials of Imaging and Image-Guided Interventions will educate and prepare radiologists at all levels and in all capacities in planning and conducting clinical imaging trials.
