Professional socialization is one area of students' development enhanced by clinical experience. Professional socialization includes learning in the affective domain by experiencing moral, ethical and legal practice as well as developing confidence in students' clinical practice. This study examined the role of clinical experience for professional socialization in Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited athletic training education programs. This was done by examining entry-level athletic trainers' perceptions of the importance of four common clinical experiences in the development of selected affective domain educational competencies. These experiences were peer practice, approved clinical instructor (ACI) instruction, practice coverage and game coverage. The affective domain competencies were chosen because they included aspects of professional socialization such as role identity and moral ethical and legal practice of athletic training. A quantitative, researcher developed, web based survey was designed and used to collect perception data from newly certified athletic trainers who had graduated from a CAAHEP accredited athletic training education program. While all four common clinical experiences were reported as important to subject mastery of the competencies, ACI instruction and practice coverage were reported to be more important than both peer practice and game coverage. These results are important to athletic training educators as they try to develop the best possible combination of classroom, laboratory and clinical experience to better prepare future generations of confident and successful practicing athletic trainers."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: Differences in perceptions of professional preparedness and factors influencing professional preparedness among entry-level athletic trainers between graduates of professional bachelor's (PB) and professional master's (PM) degree programs were investigated through a mixed-methods study design. A survey and the option for a follow-up interview was sent to a random sample of 1000 entry-level athletic trainers. After applying inclusion criteria, there was a final N of 56. There were no significant differences in perceptions of professional preparedness between PB and PM graduates in any domain of athletic training. In PB and PM program graduates, perceptions of preparedness were significantly lower in the domain of Healthcare Administration and Professional Responsibility compared to all other domains, the domain of Injury Prevention and Wellness Protection (p=.000), the domain of Examination, Assessment, and Diagnosis (p=.000), the domain of Immediate and Emergency Care (p=.000), and the domain of Therapeutic Intervention (p=.000). Clinical Education was ranked to be the most influential factor to professional preparation among PB and PM program graduates. Results call for increased focus on the domain of Healthcare Administration and Professional responsibility through didactic coursework and clinical experiences.

Besides, the study seeks to establish the level of burnout among athletic training students. Additionally, the study aims to establish the solution for the issues identified and recommends strategies that athletic training programs should implement to mitigate stress and burnout. Role strain, work-family conflict, and professional socialization are the leading cause of stress and burnout among athletic training students. Task incongruence, role conflict, ambiguity, overload, and incompetency were the identified aspects of strain in ATs. The ambiguity in the athletic training profession is connected to insufficient specificity, while role conflict occurs in a situation where an individual is assigned to multiple roles at the same time. In essence, an individual's values and beliefs may not be compatible with professional job demands, causing role incongruence (the situation where description does not align with an individual's personality). Nineteen articles deeply examine the effect of role strain in athletic training students' profession. Work-family conflict is the disturbance emanating from the profession's family responsibilities, impacting their professional accomplishment. Fourteen researchers examined this problem extensively in the reviewed research articles, and it was determined to be a potential cause of burnout among athletic training students. High travel demands and long working hours are the two causes of work-family conflicts identified in the study. Besides, delayed or rescheduled games were determined to contribute to work-family conflict among the athletic trainers. The study found professional socialization and burnout among athletic training students closely related. Role revolution, gaining stability, formal preparation, envisioning the role, and organizational entry are the five essential phases of professional specialization in sports medicine.

Book excerpt: Context: The cognitive process of making a clinical decision lies somewhere on a continuum between novices utilizing hypothetico-deductive reasoning and experts relying more on case pattern recognition and has not been explicitly measured in athletic training. Factors thought to enhance or hinder clinical reasoning ability must be investigated and compared to current medical literature to ensure that appropriate strategies for developing sound clinical reasoning skills are being developed and utilized. Objective: To determine differences in clinical reasoning ability of athletic trainers and students and factors perceived to enhance or hinder individual clinical reasoning abilities. Design: Original qualitative and quanitative research. Setting: Online inventory and interviews. Participants: 103 athletic trainers and senior level undergraduate athletic training students were randomly selected to participate in the DTI-AT. 23 randomly selected participants conducted the follow up interviews. Data Collection and Analysis: Randomly selected athletic trainers and athletic training students completed an online version of the DTI-AT which rated clinical reasoning tendencies on a 6 point Likert-type scale. ANOVA with Scheffe's post hoc was conducted to determine differences between participant groups. Randomly selected participants were interviewed face to face in an on-line format in order to determine their understanding of their cognitive processing ability and perceived factors that enhance and hinder clinical reasoning ability utilizing a general inductive approach. Results: A significant effect was found for total DTI-AT score, FIT subset, and SOM subset. Post hoc analysis revealed no significant differences within the participant groups of total DTI-AT, FIT subset or SOM subset scores. Qualitative analysis confirmed DTI-AT finding that AT and ATS participants utilized expert and novice level cognitive reasoning strategies, respectively. Professional socialization, and metacognitive activities were the main themes thought to enhance individual clinical reasoning abilities. Lack of professional socialization, lack of time, limited experience, and educational setting were the main barriers thought to detract from developing higher level thinking abilities.

Book excerpt: Athletic training and physical therapy programs suffer from a shortage of appropriately prepared faculty members. The role of faculty member includes engaging in research, service and teaching and may also include administrative and practice responsibilities. It is not understood how junior faculty members are prepared for or balance these multiple roles. Therefore, we sought to understand the preparation mechanisms and organizational socialization processes utilized for athletic training and physical therapy junior faculty members and investigate their ability to balance their roles. Twenty-six participants, 13 physical therapists and 13 athletic trainers completed a one-time semi-structured interview. Data were transcribed and analyzed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. Content experts, pilot interviews, saturation, multiple analyst triangulation and member checking reinforced trustworthiness of the findings. Junior faculty members were prepared for their employment by their doctoral degree programs and clinical practice. Upon entering new positions participants described orientation sessions and collegial workplace environments as the primary organizational socialization methods. Participants also described a vast overload in their new positions. Role overload, stemming from a high volume of responsibilities, caused participants to implement strategies such as scheduling and planning. Athletic training and physical therapy practitioners seeking faculty positions should pursue doctoral programs that provide them with hands-on active learning experiences mimicking their future faculty roles. Additionally, clinical practice experience can bolster competence and confidence and further assist in future teaching endeavors. Organizational socialization can positively impact a faculty member's understanding of their role and permit their integration into the culture of their institution. However, junior faculty members are overloaded by the array of roles they must assume. Though faculty members have developed strategies, administrators and institutions should strive to create innovative programs that aid newly hired educator's preparation and socialization.
