This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes poverty dynamics in rural Bangladesh using a nationally representative panel dataset of 5,260 rural households interviewed in 2011/12 and 2015. We find that education, savings, assets, non-farm employment, substantial safety net transfers, and women’s empowerment are key factors in breaking persistent poverty; and savings, non-farm engagement, and substantial safety net transfers prevent households from falling into poverty. The results are consistent across multinomial logit, logit, and simultaneous quantile regression models. Thus, policies and programs that address the determinants of persistent and transient poverty identified in this study hold promise for sustained poverty reduction in rural Bangladesh.

Book Synopsis Securing food for all in Bangladesh by : Ahmed, Akhter, ed.
Download or read book Securing food for all in Bangladesh written by Ahmed, Akhter, ed. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2021-11-05 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Securing Food for All in Bangladesh presents an array of research that collectively address four broad issues: (1) agricultural technology adoption; (2) input use and agricultural productivity; (3) food security and output market; and (4) poverty, food security, and women’s empowerment. The fifteen chapters of the book address diverse aspects within these four themes. Access to sufficient food by all people at all times to meet their dietary needs is a matter of critical importance. Despite declining arable agricultural land, Bangladesh has made commendable progress in boosting domestic food production. The growth in overall food production has been keeping ahead of population growth, resulting in higher per capita availability of food over time. In the early 1970s, Bangladesh was a food-deficit country with a population of about 75 million. Today, the population is 165 million, and the country is now self-sufficient in rice production, which has tripled over the past three decades. Along with enhanced food production, increased income has improved people’s access to food. Furthermore, nutritional outcomes have improved significantly. Nevertheless, the challenges to food and nutrition security remain formidable. Future agricultural growth and food and nutrition security are threatened by population growth, worsening soil fertility, diminishing access to land and other scarce natural resources, increasing vulnerability of crop varieties to pests and diseases, and persistent poverty leading to poor access to food. In addition, the impacts of climate change—an increase in the incidence of natural disasters, sea intrusion, and salinity—will exacerbate food and nutrition insecurity in the coming decades if corrective measures are not taken. Aligned with this context, the authors of the book explore policy options and strategies for developing agriculture and improving food security in Bangladesh. Securing Food for All in Bangladesh, with its breadth and scope, will be an invaluable resource for policymakers, researchers, and students dedicated to improving people’s livelihoods in Bangladesh.
Book Synopsis Autumn Bird and the Runaway by : Melanie Florence
Download or read book Autumn Bird and the Runaway written by Melanie Florence and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2022-07-04 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two kids from different worlds form an unexpected friendship. Cody’s home life is a messy, too-often terrifying story of neglect and abuse. Cody himself is a smart kid, a survivor with a wicked sense of humour that helps him see past his circumstances and begin to try to get himself out. Autumn is, quite literally, on the other side of the tracks from him. Her home life is loving and secure, and she is “in” with the popular girls at school, even if she has a secret life as a glasses-wearing, self-professed comic book nerd at home. And even if the pressure to fit in at school requires hours of time spent making herself look “perfect.” Returning home from a movie one evening, Autumn comes across Cody, face down in the laneway behind her house. All Cody knows is that he can’t take another beating from his father like the one he just narrowly escaped. He can’t go home, but he doesn’t have anywhere else to go either. Autumn won’t turn her back on him, even if they never really were friends at school. She agrees to let him hide out in her dad’s art studio at night. Over the next couple of days of Autumn sneaking Cody food and bandages, his story comes out. And so does hers. Told in alternating narratives, Autumn Bird and the Runaway is a breathtaking collaboration by two of Canada’s finest writers of books for young readers. Infused with themes of identity, belonging and compassion, it’s a story that reminds us that we are all more than our circumstances, and we are all more connected than we think

Download or read book The Hope Mafia written by Saint Maverick and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2022-05-06 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those of us blessed with a comfortable life are definitely a minority compared to those who are not. Not by the number maybe, but by the sheer scale of misery the unfortunate lot go through for absolutely no fault of theirs. Children suffering physical and sexual abuse at the hands of adults who are supposed to protect them, young adolescents succumbing to bullying by their peers, the poor and less privileged being exploited by the conscienceless affluent, young women getting trafficked into the flesh trade by the mindless pimpgangs... and the list goes on. DREAD stalks these hapless souls and drives them through extremely frightening dark alleys... forcing them fight it out all by themselves with no help in sight, till they sight the end of their very lives. The Hope Mafia turns the table on this rather stark, dreary scenario by unleashing a positive energy that eclipses the depressive reality with a far more violent offensive. And the plot bolsters itself on this creative premise: Because the agents of The Hope Mafia are up for a formidable task, they are coded with an altruistic DNA and endowed with some special powers to accomplish their mission.
