Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the industrial revolution and coal mining in the 19th century followed by oil and gas drilling in the 20th century, massive CO2 emissions are responsible for global warming and rising sea levels, which will continue until political and industrial energy decision-makers put in place effective energy transition solutions. In the meantime, younger generations are worried and some even suffer from climate eco-anxiety. This book gives examples of simulated coastal submersion, based on selected examples in the North Sea, the Mediterranean, the English Channel, the Atlantic, and on islands in the Caribbean, the Pacific and the Indian Oceans. Then, to reassure the generations of the 22nd century, this book explains the energy transition, the advantages of green hydrogen in particular, low-carbon architecture, carbon neutrality for large cities and biomimicry. Finally, it proposes solutions for the adaptation of existing coastal settlement, as well as for the construction of new types of housing on stilts and/or floating, for CO2 capture, the adaptation of port infrastructures, multi-purpose offshore platform designs, and floating cities. It is to help today's youth that this book was written, so that future generations don't need to be afraid of the sea; instead of running away, they can continue to live on the coast. Full of illustrations, it includes 73 colour pages presenting 40 maps, 62 photos and 26 graphs or 3D sketches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is profoundly altering our world in ways that pose major risks to human societies and natural systems. We have entered the Climate Casino and are rolling the global-warming dice, warns economist William Nordhaus. But there is still time to turn around and walk back out of the casino, and in this essential book the author explains how.div /DIVdivBringing together all the important issues surrounding the climate debate, Nordhaus describes the science, economics, and politics involved—and the steps necessary to reduce the perils of global warming. Using language accessible to any concerned citizen and taking care to present different points of view fairly, he discusses the problem from start to finish: from the beginning, where warming originates in our personal energy use, to the end, where societies employ regulations or taxes or subsidies to slow the emissions of gases responsible for climate change./DIVdiv /DIVdivNordhaus offers a new analysis of why earlier policies, such as the Kyoto Protocol, failed to slow carbon dioxide emissions, how new approaches can succeed, and which policy tools will most effectively reduce emissions. In short, he clarifies a defining problem of our times and lays out the next critical steps for slowing the trajectory of global warming./DIV

Book excerpt: The topic of the 43rd Congress of the International Institute of Public Finance was "Public Finance and the Performance of Enterprises." The title reflected profound changes in the thinking and approaches of economists traced back to economic developments such as the worldwide slowing down of economic growth, dwindling of productivity increases, growing unemployment, and rampant increase in public debt experienced during the 1970s and 80s. The Congress was not primarily concerned therefore with the economic efficiency of particular enterprises, but with the interface of Public Finance and the behavior of enterprises. The intent was to detect how fiscal policy decisions effect the behavior of enterprises and how this in turn influences the overall performance of an economy--to seek microeconomic foundations for macroeconomic relationships. This volume presents the proceedings of the 43rd Congress with papers from numerous international contributors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

It reflects a diversity of viewpoints and makes no claim to finality. However, it represents an effort to carry the debate, which started with the establishment of the International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS), or arguably much earlier, one step further, onto the planetary level.
