Book excerpt: The topic of the 43rd Congress of the International Institute of Public Finance was "Public Finance and the Performance of Enterprises." The title reflected profound changes in the thinking and approaches of economists traced back to economic developments such as the worldwide slowing down of economic growth, dwindling of productivity increases, growing unemployment, and rampant increase in public debt experienced during the 1970s and 80s. The Congress was not primarily concerned therefore with the economic efficiency of particular enterprises, but with the interface of Public Finance and the behavior of enterprises. The intent was to detect how fiscal policy decisions effect the behavior of enterprises and how this in turn influences the overall performance of an economy--to seek microeconomic foundations for macroeconomic relationships. This volume presents the proceedings of the 43rd Congress with papers from numerous international contributors.

Book Synopsis Industrial Transformation in Eastern Europe in the Light of the East Asian Experience by : Jeffrey Henderson
Download or read book Industrial Transformation in Eastern Europe in the Light of the East Asian Experience written by Jeffrey Henderson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1989, the postcommunist societies of Eastern Europe have been subject to policy advice and political and economic pressure which assumes that the development of 'free market' economies is the best route to economic growth and prosperity. The contributors to this volume take issue with this proposition. Though working from different theoretical perspectives, with different interests, they collectively argue that there are better ways to build dynamic and prosperous industrial economies in Eastern Europe than encouraging the respective societies of the region to ape the contents and swallow the myths of the Anglo-American form of capitalism. The contributors to this volume are among the leading authorities on economic transformation in Eastern Europe.

Book Synopsis Renforcer les compétences au Cameroun by : Shobhana Sosale
Download or read book Renforcer les compétences au Cameroun written by Shobhana Sosale and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cameroon has strong goals for its growth and development. By 2035, it aims to be an emerging economy. The country s medium-term goals are focused on alleviating poverty, consolidating democracy, and achieving national unity while respecting diversity. This report contributes substantively to the Government s vision on Strategy for Growth and Employment, putting human development and employment at center stage. Cameroon faces three main challenges: Developing more robust formal and informal employment opportunities by strengthening human development. Increasing productivity in agriculture, mining, and key value chains (timber, tourism, and information and communication technology). Advancing growth by investing in infrastructure and improving the business climate and regional integration. The Strategy sets a target for reducing underemployment from 76 percent of the workforce to 50 by 2020 by creating tens of thousands of formal jobs. But based on results from the first two years of its implementation, the strategy is far from achieving that target. This report is meant to support Cameroon s efforts to build the skills of its workers. This report reaches conclusions and offers policy recommendations to answer six questions: What has been the trajectory of Cameroon s economic growth? Which sectors have contributed to growth? What jobs are being created? What types of skills are being used in the sectors where the highest percentages of the population are employed? What are the demand and supply barriers to skills? Which policies and institutions are in play? Are they sufficient? What needs to or could be reformed? Cameroon has good prospects for moving to middle-income status. It can create a more dynamic, responsive workforce. But a new strategy is required. It can be done. This report proposes new directions and provides recommendations. Outcomes are expected. Work has never been easy. But many have been working and Cameroon can work."

Book Synopsis L’Urbanisation diversifiée by : Madio Fall
Download or read book L’Urbanisation diversifiée written by Madio Fall and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
