Download or read book Writing-Enriched Curricula written by Chris M. Anson and published by CSU Open Press. This book was released on 2022-05-16 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection introduces, theorizes, and illustrates the Writing-Enriched Curriculum (WEC), an approach to integrating relevant writing and communication instruction into diverse departmental curricula. The book organizes into three sections: "The WEC Approach," which tracks WEC's genesis, theorizes its approach, and explicates the model's component moves; "Accounts of Departmentally-Focused Implementation," which provides examples of the model's adaptive implementation in a range of institutional settings (including large research universities and small liberal arts colleges) and departmental contexts (including those in STEM fields, humanities, social sciences, and arts); and "Extensions and Contextual Variation," which evidences ways in which WEC extends pre-existing writing initiatives and forges constructive partnerships between idiosyncratic academic departments and programs. Themes taken up in this collection include the transformative potential of engaging academic departments in collectively examining their own tacit and explicit writing values, and ways in which the WEC model's decentralized and iterative processes circumvent factors that have long threatened the sustainability of writing across the curriculum and writing in the disciplines programming"--

Download or read book Talk, Tools, and Texts written by Ryan J. Dippre and published by CSU Open Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Talk, Tools, and Texts explores how writers and writing grows and changes through the lifespan, drawing on relevant research in literacy, education, writing studies, sociology, psychology, and ethnomethodology. It makes a case for the value of lifespan writing research; provides a logic-in-use for examining literate action at different points in the lifespan so that the material, situated work of literate action development can be identified and traced; and applies this logic to the study of eleven writers at different points in the lifespan. This logic is then proposed as a foundational infrastructure for building coherent middle-range theories of lifespan literate action development, and to provide new insight into research on writing transfer and writing development"--

Book Synopsis Science Teachers' Learning by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Science Teachers' Learning written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, many states are adopting the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) or are revising their own state standards in ways that reflect the NGSS. For students and schools, the implementation of any science standards rests with teachers. For those teachers, an evolving understanding about how best to teach science represents a significant transition in the way science is currently taught in most classrooms and it will require most science teachers to change how they teach. That change will require learning opportunities for teachers that reinforce and expand their knowledge of the major ideas and concepts in science, their familiarity with a range of instructional strategies, and the skills to implement those strategies in the classroom. Providing these kinds of learning opportunities in turn will require profound changes to current approaches to supporting teachers' learning across their careers, from their initial training to continuing professional development. A teacher's capability to improve students' scientific understanding is heavily influenced by the school and district in which they work, the community in which the school is located, and the larger professional communities to which they belong. Science Teachers' Learning provides guidance for schools and districts on how best to support teachers' learning and how to implement successful programs for professional development. This report makes actionable recommendations for science teachers' learning that take a broad view of what is known about science education, how and when teachers learn, and education policies that directly and indirectly shape what teachers are able to learn and teach. The challenge of developing the expertise teachers need to implement the NGSS presents an opportunity to rethink professional learning for science teachers. Science Teachers' Learning will be a valuable resource for classrooms, departments, schools, districts, and professional organizations as they move to new ways to teach science.

Book excerpt: In Writing and School Reform, Joanne Addison and Sharon James McGee respond to a testing and accountability movement that has imposed increasingly stronger measures of control over our classrooms, shifted teaching away from best practices, and eroded teacher and student agency. Drawing on historical and empirical research, Writing and School Reform details the origins of the accountability movement, explores its emerging effects on the teaching of writing, and charts a path forward that reasserts the agency of teachers and researchers in the field.

Download or read book Try This written by Jennifer Clary-Lemon and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Try This explores interdisciplinary research methods employed in research in writing studies but rarely drawn upon in undergraduate courses. This shifts writing instruction from a model of knowledge delivery and solitary research to a pedagogy of knowledge-making and an acknowledgment of research writing as collective, overlapping, and distributed. Each chapter is organized around methods to approach a particular kind of primary data--texts, artifacts, places, and images. Accompanying "Try This" invention projects in each chapter invite readers to "try" the research methods. Some projects are designed to try during class time and take 5 to 15 minutes, while others are extensive and will take days to accomplish. Each research writing opportunity introduced in a "Try This" invention project is designed to scaffold a research project. Each chapter offers different genres that allow research to circulate and connect meaningfully with audiences, including digital research posters, data visualizations, and short-form presentations. This book is also available as an open access ebook through the WAC Clearinghouse.
