Book excerpt: The ancient counties surrounding the Weald in the SE corner of England have a strongly marked character of their own that has survived remarkably well in the face of ever-increasing population pressure. The area is, however, comparatively neglected in discussion of Roman Britain, where it is often subsumed into a generalised treatment of the ‘civilian’ part of Britannia that is based largely on other parts of the country. This book aims to redress the balance. The focus is particularly on Kent, Surrey and Sussex account is taken of information from neighboring counties, particularly when the difficult subsoils affect the availability of evidence. An overview of the environment and a consideration of themes relevant to the South-East as a whole accompany 14 papers covering the topics of rural settlement in each county, crops, querns and millstones, animal exploitation, salt production, leatherworking, the working of bone and similar materials, the production of iron and iron objects, non-ferrous metalworking, pottery production and the supply of tile to Roman London. Agriculture and industry provides an up-to-date assessment of our knowledge of the southern hinterland of Roman London and an area that was particularly open to influences from the Continent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, in a single convenient volume, is the essential reference book for anyone with an interest in British history. First published in 1997, under the editorship of the late John Cannon and in consultation with over 100 distinguished contributors, this Companion has now been updated by Robert Crowcroft to include the very latest scholarship and research. It describes and analyses the people and events that have shaped and defined life in Britain over more than 2,000 years of political, social, and cultural change, encompassing topics as diverse as the War of the Roses, the Blitz, Stonehenge, Henry VIII, the suffragettes, the industrial revolution, the NHS, the Suez Crisis, the TUC, and the Afghan campaign. Over 4,500 entries provide a wealth of fact and insight on all aspects of the subject and from a variety of perspectives, including social, political, military, cultural, economic, scientific, and feminist. Entries cover not only monarchs, battles, and political events, but also the wider aspects of British history over the centuries. New entries on topics such as alternative vote, the 2008 financial crisis, Olympics in Britain, and the Scottish Independence Referendum, and UKIP ensure that the Companion remains relevant and current. Useful appendices include maps and genealogies, as well as a subject index. Coverage includes authors, composers and musicians, legal and technical terms, newspapers and periodicals, ranks and orders, sport and leisure, and scholarship and education. For those who like to explore history on the ground, there are also entries on individual counties, cathedrals, and churches, palaces and royal residences, and a range of other sites of historical significance. As well as providing reliable factual information, the Companion also offers detailed interpretation and analysis, giving readers a sense of how events and personalities relate to each other, whilst its multi-disciplinary approach places topics in a wide context. Whether you need to check the date of the Peasants' Revolt, understand what happened at the Battle of Imphal, find out about the history of maypoles, or compare the careers of successive Princes of Wales, The Oxford Companion to British History is a book no home reference shelf should be without.

Book excerpt: “Presents an understanding of the science, skills, and craft of the archaeologist and how these can be used to unravel many criminal mysteries.” —Police History Society Newsletter Today, police forces all over the world use archaeological techniques to help them solve crimes—and archaeologists are using the same methods to identify and investigate crimes in the past. This book introduces some of those techniques, and explains how they have been used not only to solve modern crimes, but also to investigate past wrongdoing. Past Crimes presents archaeological and historical evidence of crimes from mankind’s earliest days, as well as evidence of how criminals were judged and punished. Each society has had a different approach to law and order, and these approaches are discussed here with examples ranging from Ancient Egypt to Victorian England—police forces, courts, prisons, and executions have all left their traces in the physical and written records. Also discussed here is how the development of forensic approaches has been used to collect and analyze evidence that were invented by pioneer criminologists. From the murder of a Neanderthal man to bank fraud in the nineteenth century, via ancient laws about religion and morality and the changes in social conditions and attitudes, a wide range of cases are included—some terrible crimes, some amusing anecdotes, and some forms of ancient law-breaking that remain very familiar.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excavations upstream of Roman London bridge in north Southwark uncovered evidence for mid 1st-century AD land reclamation and the establishment of a road and buildings. The waterfront was extended northwards in c AD 80 and new buildings, including rectangular and circular masonry buildings associated with grain storage, were constructed around a newly aligned yard or roadway. In the early 2nd century a prestigious new building complex, established on a different alignment, may have had a military or administrative purpose. Ranges of rooms, some plastered and elaborately painted, enclosed a courtyard bath suite. Some of these buildings continued in use until the late 4th century.
