Book excerpt: The effectiveness of several devices in simulating the effects of a rocket plume on the flow field of a typical missile in the transonic Mach number range was investigated. Two plume-shaped solid bodies and three step-type plume simulators were tested. The effects on model pressure distribution of small angle of attack and plume-simulator position were investigated. The analysis showed that all the plume simulators tested can give approximately the same model afterbody pressure distribution at transonic Mach numbers and small angles of attack as an actual rocket plume. Book excerpt: The Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (BGCAPP) is under construction near Richmond, Kentucky, two dispose of one of the two remaining stockpiles of chemical munitions in the United States. The stockpile that BGCAPP will dispose of is stored at the Blue Grass Army Depot (BGAD). BGCAPP is a tenant activity on BGAD. The stockpile stored at BGAD consists of mustard agent loaded in projectiles, and the nerve agents GB and VX loaded into projectiles and M55 rockets. BGCAPP will process the rockets by cutting them, still in their shipping and firing tube (SFT), between the warhead and motor sections of the rocket. The warhead will be processed through BGCAPP. The separated rocket motors that have been monitored for chemical agent and cleared for transportation outside of BGCAPP, the subject of this report, will be disposed of outside of BGCAPP. Any motors found to be contaminated with chemical agent will be processed through BGCAPP and are not addressed in this report. Disposal Options for the Rocket Motors From Nerve Agent Rockets Stored at Blue Grass Army Depot addresses safety in handling the separated rocket motors with special attention to the electrical ignition system, the need for adequate storage space for the motors in order to maintain the planned disposal rate at BGCAPP, thermal and chemical disposal technologies, and on-site and off-site disposal options. On-site is defined as disposal on BGAD, and off-site is defined as disposal by a commercial or government facility outside of BGAD.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertical quasi-steady state forces on three dual rail rocket sleds, which were predicted using wind tunnel data, are compared with those measured on the Holloman Test Track. A description of the magnitude and character of the oscillatory forces is also presented. This is the first such comparison since the advent of rocket sled testing. Wind tunnel force tests on the three rocket sleds indicated that aerodynamic forces would be of sufficient magnitude to warrant consideration in structural design. The forces measured during the track tests indicated that the aerodynamic contribution was the dominant component to the vertical quasi-steady state force in the supersonic regime. The results of full-scale investigations showed implicitly that when the sleds experienced considerable aerodynamic forces, the wind tunnel data agreed fairly well with the forces measured on the rocket sled. The quasi-steady state vertical forces were predicted, using wind tunnel data, to within 3,000 pounds for loads between 12,000 and 32,000 pounds. (Author).

Book excerpt: Methods were developed for measurement of specific components of forces acting on rocket sleds during runs. The forces acting on the sleds for which the instrumentation was developed to measure were the thrust forces from the pusher, the braking forces, and forces acting on the slipper by the track. The methods of measuring the forces included instrumentation of the existing sled structures with strain gages and use of specially developed force transducers which were mounted on the slippers. For both force measurement methods, static calibration procedures were used. The transducer developed was a three component force transducer, measuring two orthogonal components of force and one moment component. Two of these transducers were manufactured and sent to Holloman Air Force Base for use. In addition to the development of methods of measuring forces, the contractor consulted with the Track Test Directorate on problems related to force systems acting on sleds and behavior of the sled due to the force systems. Descriptions of this work are included. (Author).
