Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A superb guide to 400 statues, columns, reliefs, and other components of the state’s commemorative landscape.” —Gary W. Gallagher, author of The Union War Throughout Tennessee, Civil War monuments stand tall across the landscape, from Chattanooga to Memphis, and recall important events and figures within the Volunteer State’s military history. In Tennessee Civil War Monuments, Timothy S. Sedore reveals the state’s history-laden landscape through the lens of its many lasting monuments. War monuments have been cropping up since the beginning of the commemoration movement in 1863, and Tennessee is now home to four hundred memorials. Not only does Sedore provide commentary for every monument—its history and aesthetic panache—he also explores the relationships that Tennessee natives have with these historic landmarks. A detailed exploration of the monuments that enrich this Civil War landscape, Sedore’s Tennessee Civil War Monuments is a guide to Tennessee’s spirit and heritage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 150 years after the end of the Civil War, scores of websites, articles, and organizations repeat claims that anywhere between 500 and 100,000 free and enslaved African Americans fought willingly as soldiers in the Confederate army. But as Kevin M. Levin argues in this carefully researched book, such claims would have shocked anyone who served in the army during the war itself. Levin explains that imprecise contemporary accounts, poorly understood primary-source material, and other misrepresentations helped fuel the rise of the black Confederate myth. Moreover, Levin shows that belief in the existence of black Confederate soldiers largely originated in the 1970s, a period that witnessed both a significant shift in how Americans remembered the Civil War and a rising backlash against African Americans' gains in civil rights and other realms. Levin also investigates the roles that African Americans actually performed in the Confederate army, including personal body servants and forced laborers. He demonstrates that regardless of the dangers these men faced in camp, on the march, and on the battlefield, their legal status remained unchanged. Even long after the guns fell silent, Confederate veterans and other writers remembered these men as former slaves and not as soldiers, an important reminder that how the war is remembered often runs counter to history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My love of Meigs County began as a young child; I visited many summers with relatives, traversing hollers and river trails. Little did I realize the influence this time would have on my life. When I learned that several of my ancestors had been in the Civil War, I began researching their military history and that of many others from Meigs County. I found research difficult because little had been written in books. What was written was not in any concise order, perhaps only a paragraph or two per book. I hope the information you find here to be a much better represenation of the county and men who served during the Civil War, and will help amateur genealogists like myself to know more about their ancestors; where they fought, if they died, where, and the burial location. There are in-depth details about several battles including Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia and Corinth and Iuka, Mississippi. There are descriptions of over 9,000 men and boys, many who enlisted in Meigs County, Ohio.

This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book examines how African Americans in the South made sense of the devastating loss of life unleashed by the Civil War and emancipation. During and after the war, African Americans died in vast numbers from battle, disease, and racial violence. While freedom was a momentous event for the formerly enslaved, it was also deadly. Through an investigation into how African Americans reacted to and coped with the passing away of loved ones and community members, Ashley Towle argues that freedpeople gave credence to their free status through their experiences with mortality. African Americans harnessed the power of death in a variety of arenas, including within the walls of national and private civilian cemeteries, in applications for widows’ pensions, in the pulpits of black churches, around séance tables, on the witness stand at congressional hearings, and in the columns of African American newspapers. In the process of mourning the demise of kith and kin, black people reconstituted their families, forged communal bonds, and staked claims to citizenship, civil rights, and racial justice from the federal government. In a society upended by civil war and emancipation, death was political.
