Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This much anticipated volume looks at the historical evolution of towns and cities in medieval India from the early thirteenth to the late eighteenth century. The selection is based on the availability of documents. These include the narratives of European travellers in English, French, Italian, Dutch, and German with the exception of Ibn Battuta in mid-fourteenth century and also Middle Bengali literature in case of towns in Bengal. While the coastal towns and cities have been looked at, the interior ones are also described on the basis of the writings of later historians and archaeologists. Care has been taken to explain the rise, growth and the decline of some towns and cities in which the changing courses of rivers had played a crucial role. Attempts have been made to search other factors responsible for such eventualities. The delineation of physical features within the city has been given due emphasis including the different quarters of the city and the manners and customs of the local population with reference to craft production and commercial links. The morphological differences between the cities of eastern and those of the western or northern India have also been described. This is clear from the observations of port towns described here. All these would show that India was one of the most urbanized area in the medieval period before advent of the British.

Book excerpt: I am the Voices that you are is a book in which the poet speaks of a past, a present and a future in the city of 'Suhaag Nagri, On the map, renowned as Firozabad, Wares in Aasmani, Gulabi, Ferozi, Abounds in plenty in this City of Glass.' In this city, lives She and Her stories lovingly collected, 'Frail as loose plaster, Yet strong as a summer squall. She idolized the larger than life, Wan water-colour, a portrait, Mellowed with age, Of a man much older than her.' And of now, She says: Once upon a time When I could breathe Sing and dance Unfettered, unmasked, Until Overwhelmed Nemesis took over. But yet from her being sounds the trumpet: I am alive because you cried. Pick it up, it’s that kind of a book! -Papri Sen Sri Raman is a journalist, poet, writer and translator. Her books include a historical novel, Song of India and Jayalalithaa—A Journey.

Book excerpt: Delhi claims a noble history as the site of at least seven capitals dating from before the time of Alexander the Great. The glorious Mogul Empire brought great riches to the city and to Agra, where the world-famous Taj Mahal has excited awe in visitors for over 380 years. This Traveller's Reader is an indispensable and fascinating companion for the traveller who wants to understand the history of both cities, and who seeks the true spirit of the places. Delhi & Agra is a topographical anthology that explores the cities' sites of interest and recreates the key events, customs and lives of the past, drawing on diaries, letters, memoirs and commentaries written by residents and visitors over the course of 600 years. Extracts include Tamerlane's account of the sack of Delhi in 1398; descriptions of Shah Jahan building the Taj Mahal; recollections of Jesuits and mullahs debating the relative merits of their religions before the great Mogul emperor, Akbar; reports of cruelty and creativity, of addiction to drink and drugs; descriptions of elephant fights, suttee, the life of the bazaar and vice-regal banquets; and eyewitness accounts of the Indian Mutiny from both sides, and of the bloody aftermath of Partition. A great variety of topics are covered, vividly conveying an impression of how it would have been to live in, or visit, both cities from the recent past to hundreds of years ago.

Book excerpt: Intended for college teachers of geography, especially those teaching about developing countries, this publication contains background information about urban conditions in India. Historical and contemporary accounts of urban planning are provided for three Indian cities. The city of Jaipur was built by a maharaja in the 18th century, long before the British became a major urban force. The study of this city allows geographers to see the development of a planned city, in a unique region of India, over a period of 250 years. Delhi, the second city studied, became the capital of India in 1912, and New Delhi was created during the 1920's and 1930's to satisfy the particular needs of the British. The study of these cities focuses on the collision of Indian and colonial forces during the last 100 years. The third city studied is Chandigarh, a city that is entirely post-independence and, therefore, noncolonial. Built for Indian purposes to Indian specifications, but admittedly mainly by foreign architects, it allows geographers to identify both the aspirations and the reality of urban India during the last 25 years.
