Book Synopsis To Protect and Maintain Individual Rights by : Jonathan Bechtle
Download or read book To Protect and Maintain Individual Rights written by Jonathan Bechtle and published by Evergreen Freedom Foundation. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In To Protect and Maintain Individual Rights, Jonathan Bechtle and Michael Reitz provide a section by section analysis of the Washington Constitution's Declaration of Rights. The authors review the state's 1889 constitutional debates, contemporary accounts of the convention, and significant cases that have dealt with the rights guaranteed in the Washington Constitution. The book includes a foreword by Washington Supreme Court Justice Charles Johnson. A 2006 survey found that only twenty-five percent of Americans can name more than one freedom protected by the First Amendment. Twenty percent of those polled actually thought the right to own a pet was protected. Yet more than half of these adults could name at least two characters from a popular television cartoon. If familiarity with the U.S. Constitution is lacking, awareness of the provisions of the state constitution is deplorable. Bechtle and Reitz urge citizens to become familiar with their state constitution, as individual rights are often afforded greater protection from the state constitution than from the U.S. Constitution. “When citizens are educated in the sources of their freedoms, and familiar with attempts in history to limit these freedoms, they are better equipped to recognize new encroachments.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 200 years, the Constitution of the United States has been a “working” document, maintaining the original principles upon which our nation was founded while, at the same time, changing with the country, as reflected in its amendments. While the U.S. Constitution itself outlines the basic structure of the federal government, its twenty-seven amendments address many subjects but primarily focus on the rights of individual American citizens. This booklet outlines those rights, offering historical context and other information that is both interesting and informative. The continued vitality of our democracy is dependent upon an informed citizenry. Understanding the history of the Constitution and its amendments will assist all of us in more fully appreciating these rights and responsibilities as they have evolved over time. Moreover, such understanding will ensure that these rights will continue to be exercised, valued, and cherished by future generations.
Book Synopsis A Citizen's Guide to the Constitution and the Supreme Court by : Morgan Marietta
Download or read book A Citizen's Guide to the Constitution and the Supreme Court written by Morgan Marietta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Constitution is a blueprint for a free society as well as a source of enduring conflict over how that society must be governed. The competing ways of reading our founding document shape the decisions of the Supreme Court, which acts as the final voice on constitutional questions. This breezy, concise guide explains the central conflicts that frame our constitutional controversies, written in clear non-academic language to serve as a resource for engaged citizens, both inside and outside of an academic setting. After covering the main points of conflict in constitutional law, Marietta gives readers an overview of the perspectives from the leading schools of constititional interpretation--textualism, common law constitutionalism, originalism, and living constitutionalism. He then walks through the points of conflict and competing schools of thought in the context of several landmark cases and ends with advice to readers on how to interpret constitutional issues ourselves.

Download or read book Neither Living Nor Dead written by Jonathan T. Ettinger and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2010-11-19 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Article by Article, Section by Section, explanation of the United States Constitution based squarely on its own text. This guide is intended to help the reader become familiar with the Constitutional structure and limitations of American government and to dispel common and pervasive misunderstandings and misconceptions of both. It is a guide for understanding and application, to uphold and defend the United States Constitution. When you read and understand the Constitution, you will find: - At the start, a deliberate structure of divided and limited government power. - Democracy was never part of the plan, but recognition and protection of individual rights were. - That partisan politics running the system is the real problem with elections, especially electing the President. The Constitution and its system of Electors are not to blame. - There is no method of "incorporating" provisions of this Constitution onto the States. - 4 men considered to be past Presidents never actually were. - Congress has gained more power in choosing the President, including collusion with the Vice President to remove the sitting President. - Federal power grew almost exponentially over the 20th Century. - Of the 34 Articles, the last 14 have done more shifting of power away from original intent, away from the States, than anything. - Even after those Articles, the Federal Government claims more power than what it is Constitutionally allowed.
