Book excerpt: This book explains the topology behind automotive electronics architectures and examines how they can be profoundly augmented with embedded controllers. These controllers serve as the core building blocks of today’s vehicle electronics. Rather than simply teaching electrical basics, this unique resource focuses on the fundamental concepts of vehicle electronics architecture, and details the wide variety of Electronic Control Modules (ECMs) that enable the increasingly sophisticated "bells & whistles" of modern designs. A must-have for automotive design engineers, technicians working in automotive electronics repair centers and students taking automotive electronics courses, this guide bridges the gap between academic instruction and industry practice with clear, concise advice on how to design and optimize automotive electronics with embedded controllers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our purpose in writing this book was two-fold. First, we wanted to compile a chronology of the research in the field of mixed-mode simulation over the last ten to fifteen years. A substantial amount of work was done during this period of time but most of it was published in archival form in Masters theses and Ph. D. dissertations. Since the interest in mixed-mode simulation is growing, and a thorough review of the state-of-the-art in the area was not readily available, we thought it appropriate to publish the information in the form of a book. Secondly, we wanted to provide enough information to the reader so that a proto type mixed-mode simulator could be developed using the algorithms in this book. The SPLICE family of programs is based on the algorithms and techniques described in this book and so it can also serve as docu mentation for these programs. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The authors would like to dedicate this book to Prof. D. O. Peder son for inspiring this research work and for providing many years of support and encouragement The authors enjoyed many fruitful discus sions and collaborations with Jim Kleckner, Young Kim, Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli, and Jacob White, and we thank them for their contributions. We also thank the countless others who participated in the research work and read early versions of this book. Lillian Beck provided many useful suggestions to improve the manuscript. Yun cheng Ju did the artwork for the illustrations.

Book excerpt: The Controller Area Network (CAN) was originally developed to be used as a vehicle data bus system in passenger cars. Today, CAN controllers are available from over 20 manufacturers, and CAN is finding applications in other fields, such as medical, aerospace, process control, automation, and so on. This book is written for students, for practising engineers, for hobbyists, and for everyone else who may be interested to learn more about the CAN bus and its applications. The aim of this book is to teach you the basic principles of CAN networks and in addition the development of microcontroller based projects using the CAN bus. In summary, this book enables the reader to: Learn the theory of the CAN bus used in automotive industry; Learn the principles, operation, and programming of microcontrollers; Design complete microcontroller based projects using the C language; Develop complete real CAN bus projects using microcontrollers; Learn the principles of OBD systems used to debug vehicle electronics. You will learn how to design microcontroller based CAN bus nodes, build a CAN bus, develop high-level programs, and then exchange data in real-time over the bus. You will also learn how to build microcontroller hardware and interface it to LEDs, LCDs, and A/D converters. The book assumes that the reader has some knowledge on basic electronics. Knowledge of the C programming language will be useful in later chapters of the book, and familiarity with at least one member of the PIC series of microcontrollers will be an advantage, especially if the reader intends to develop microcontroller based projects using the CAN bus. The CD contains a special demo version of the mikroC compiler which supports the key microcontrollers including: PIC, dsPIC, PIC24, PIC32 and AVR. This special version additionally features an advanced CAN library of intuitive and simple-to-use functions to encourage programming with easy and comfortable development of CAN networks.

Book excerpt: For those with a basic understanding of digital design, this book teaches the essential skills to design digital integrated circuits using Verilog and the relevant extensions of SystemVerilog. In addition to covering the syntax of Verilog and SystemVerilog, the author provides an appreciation of design challenges and solutions for producing working circuits. The book covers not only the syntax and limitations of HDL coding, but deals extensively with design problems such as partitioning and synchronization, helping you to produce designs that are not only logically correct, but will actually work when turned into physical circuits. Throughout the book, many small examples are used to validate concepts and demonstrate how to apply design skills. This book takes readers who have already learned the fundamentals of digital design to the point where they can produce working circuits using modern design methodologies. It clearly explains what is useful for circuit design and what parts of the languages are only software, providing a non-theoretical, practical guide to robust, reliable and optimized hardware design and development. - Produce working hardware: Covers not only syntax, but also provides design know-how, addressing problems such as synchronization and partitioning to produce working solutions - Usable examples: Numerous small examples throughout the book demonstrate concepts in an easy-to-grasp manner - Essential knowledge: Covers the vital design topics of synchronization, essential for producing working silicon; asynchronous interfacing techniques; and design techniques for circuit optimization, including partitioning

Desktop and web based applications are covered. The programming language used is Python, an object-oriented scripting language; a higher level language than, say, C. The book guides you through starting with Linux by way of a free downloadable, live bootable distribution that can be ported around different computers without requiring hard drive installation. Practical demonstration circuits and downloadable, full software examples are presented that can be the basis for further projects. As well as discrete digital inputs and outputs, the examples cover 12 bit analog to digital inputs. The book also shows you how you can customise your own live Linux bootable CD to include your own projects. No complicated, elaborate, software development environment is used or even required.

Innumerable applications show that almost nothing is impossible. Theres thus every reason to learn more about them, but that raises the question of where to find a good introduction to this fascinating technology. The answer is easy: this Microcontroller Basics book, combined with the 89S8252 Flash Board project published by Elektor Electronics. However, this book offers more than just a basic introduction. It clearly explains the technology using various microcontroller circuits and programs written in several different programming languages. Three microcontrollers from the 8051 family are used in the sample applications, ranging from the simple 89C2051 to the AN2131, which is designed to support USB applications. The programming tools include assemblers, Basic-52 and BASCOM-51, and several C compilers. Every reader can thus find the programming environment most suitable to his or her needs. In the course of the book, the reader gradually develops increased competence in converting his or her ideas into microcontroller circuitry. All of the sample programs can be downloaded from the Elektor Electronics website. That has the added advantage that the latest versions are always available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A circuit simulator is a computer program that permits us to see circuit behavior, i.e. circuit voltages and currents, without making the circuit. Use of a circuit simulator is a cheap, efficient, and safe way to study the behavior of circuits. The Toolkit for Interactive Network Analysis (TINA®) is a powerful yet affordable SPICE based circuit simulation and PCB design software package for analyzing, designing, and real time testing of analog, digital, VHDL, MCU, and mixed electronic circuits and their PCB layouts. This software was created by DesignSoft. TINA-TI is a spinoff software program that was designed by Texas Instruments (TI®) in cooperation with DesignSoft which incorporates a library of pre-made TI components for the user to utilize in their designs. This book shows how a circuit can be analyzed in the TINA-TI® environment. Students of engineering (for instance, electrical, biomedical, mechatronics, and robotics to name a few), engineers who work in the industry, and anyone who wants to learn the art of circuit simulation with TINA-TI can benefit from this book.
