Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manuel for Ministers and Local ChurchesBuilding the Local Churches in their structure with others in fellowshipLocal Churches maintaining their AutonomyAutonomy Autonomy is independence and self-government. It is each local church separately submitting, spiritually speaking to the Headship of Jesus and doing the work that God has assigned to the local church, with the ability and means available, preaching and edification (I Timothy 3:15, Ephesians 4:16; Acts 13:1). Submitting to one another in the fear of the Lord, bond of Peace establishing New Testament order, structure, and pattern. The general church is important in serving its role as a body of churches universally. Autonomy is not having a central or controlling board to maintain the doctrinal and moral purity of each local church within that union (this is denominationalism). Such a practice is a violation of the autonomy taught in the scriptures and the New Testament church. A local church must be challenged if they believe and practice a false teaching or doctrine contrary to scriptures and New Testament church. Christ as head of the church challenges such actions done in His name. The blessing of brothers and churches in fellowship gives accountability. We are able to answer to one another, thus giving protection and support in ministry worldwide. We must have the right to reveal and challenge the word in us to help us. This practice is seen throughout the New Testament. This is not a violating of our autonomy! It is obvious that God designed autonomy in both the local and universal church to be a safeguard. When one local church went astray, it did not automatically affect other local churches, even when they were in the same geographic area. For instance, Pergamos held the false doctrine of the Nicolatians, but this did not affect the other six churches within the same region as Pergamos (Revelation 2:3). We must appreciate the fact that the false beliefs of Pergamos were revealed and challenged by John and Jesus to the knowledge of the local church at Ephesus, Smyrna, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. A violation of autonomy would have been for the local church at Ephesus to demand, as a church, that Pergamos repent and conform. Preachers, in the epistles were repeatedly seen exposing and challenging error in local churches where they were not a member. Autonomy is meant to be protection against group alliance contamination, but not exemption from liable accountability, and responsibility of actions. The challenge against error or exposure of sin and false doctrine must always be maintained in preaching the pure gospel! We must answer to the gospel we preach in our churches and the world. The truth is that the autonomy of local churches in the early church of the First Century is clear. The history of these primitive churches total commitment to the risen Lord gave them the Power to turn the world upside down, thus right side up. They established fully Christs presence in the earth a local and universal order."

This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Church of God in Christ (COGIC), the first major denomination to spring from the fires of the Azusa Street revival, profoundly affected the history of the black church. Its tremendous influence can be traced to the dynamic spiritual life of its founder, Charles Harrison Mason. The son of a slave and a leader in the holiness movement of his day, Mason traveled to Azusa Street in 1907 where he received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Returning home, he discovered that visions, spontaneous healing and deliverance followed him. A new power accompanied his preaching, and he experienced freedom from former limitations. Mason’s vibrant spiritual life enabled him to lead a fledgling movement from its infancy to a powerful, prophetic community over the next fifty years. Beginning in the rural South in the decades following the Reconstruction Era, the denomination gradually moved into urban areas during the 1900’s. No matter where its ministers, however, the COGIC Church holds in tension the dynamics of holiness, spiritual encounter and prophetic Christian social consciousness. Facing the challenges of our generation, the COGIC Church desires to maintain the legacy of its founder as it prepares for another century of work and witness. "Our younger generations need to know the rich legacy bequeathed to them by the pioneers of the Church of God in Christ." Presiding Bishop Chandler D. Owens "Every pastor in our denomination and beyond should have a worn and well read copy of this book." Bishop Charles E. Blake, Sr. "This valuable book should be in the hands of every member of the Church of God in Christ." Bishop C. L. Anderson "God gave Bishop C. H. Mason an anointing to preach powerfully, to heal the sick, and to sing out in spontaneous worship. May we covet the same anointing that transformed thousands in his day." Bishop J. Neaul Haynes "We are the descendants of a mighty move of God that began at Azusa Street. This book will help us to pass on an equally dynamic spiritual life to our successors, taking the Church of God in Christ into the next century." Bishop P. A. Brooks "Church leaders would do well to emulate the dynamic spiritual life of our founder; Bishop C. H. Mason." Bishop O. T. Jones, Jr. "Bishop Clemmons reminds us that our denomination was forged in the fires of a pentecostal revival that continues to impact our society today." Bishop Gilbert E. Patterson "Our roots establish our legacy and provide the springboard for the future. This documentation is a must for this generation and the generations to come." Mother Emma F. Crouch, Supervisor, Women's Department, Church of God in Christ, President, International Women's Convention "This is must reading for every seminary student preparing to minister in the Church of God in Christ. This will be extremely valuable to students of church history regardless of denomination." Dr. H. Vinson Synan, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Divinity, Regent University "Finally, a documentary written by a black historian/theologian and a lifelong member of the Church of God in Christ. Bishop Clemmons' perspective is insightful, informative, and refreshing." Dr. William C. Turner, Ph.D., Professor of Theology, Duke Divinity School, Duke University "Allow Bishop C. H. Mason's vision to grip you, to challenge you, and to change you." Raymond C. Pierce, J.D., Deputy Assistant Secretary, U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights

Clergy are generally equipped to preach and provide spiritual care. But when it comes to budgets, insurance, fire safety, and church management many find themselves at a loss. The Church Administration and Finance Manual is the classic guide to running a church, written to answer key questions for clergy and lay leaders. Not simply a theoretical resource, the Manual provides suggestions for almost every aspect of parish administration: position descriptions, financial forms, materials for stewardship and Christian education, building use and safety issues, employee record keeping, and much more. This revised edition offers guidance on many new topics that are of vital importance to churches, including protecting children, information security, approaches to preventing and responding to violence, planned giving, social media, and hybrid work and worship. Whether clergy are just out of seminary or well-seasoned in parish life, the Manual is full of excellent guidelines, tools, and forms for improving the management of the parish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The title Are You a Christian or a Disciple? boldly addresses a question that has ultimate implications for every Christ Follower, and which God seems to be pushing into the center of today's global "Christian" conversation. Well researched and presented, this book is going to challenge thinking about what it means to be a disciple-- nothing less than a fully devoted follower of Jesus! Ed Gross has given the church a very timely, provocative, and practical resource!" Jerry Trousdale - author of the best-selling book: Miraculous Movements: How Hundreds of Thousands of Muslims are Falling in Love with Jesus "With an authentic love for the church and a rigorous commitment to Biblical study, Ed takes on the task of showing us how we have lost the true meaning of discipleship, replacing it with a comfortable-living brand of Christianity that ignores how Jesus taught his disciples to be and to make disciples. This book may challenge long held notions of effective evangelism, missions, ministry, and discipleship. I've seen, in several places around the world, the 1st century brand of explosive disciple-making that Ed talks about. Can it happen here? That may depend on how we respond to the question, Are You a Christian or a Disciple?" - Dr. Dave Hunt - VP Disciple Making Movements in the Americas - CityTeam International "When Ed preaches, he preaches even to the point of tears. In this book Dr. Gross passionately pleads that you, I, the whole church will take the Word of God at face value, particularly Jesus' command to make disciples." Dr. Robert Styer, Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, Director of the Comprehensive Science Program, Villanova University Edward N Gross (DMis-Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is Coordinator of Strategic Alliances with CityNet Ministries in Philadelphia, PA. He has served in missions, church planting, pastoral ministry and theological education in the USA and abroad. He teaches at Back to the Bible Training College in South Africa. Ed has been married to his wife Debby for 37 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pastor's Handbook (KJV) is intended to meet the continuing need of the Christian minister for guidance and forms as he does the work of the ministry. It seeks to offer options to suit the tastes of the pastor and congregation within the parameters of quality, beauty and dignity. To this end, numerous changes, both large and small, have been made—more selected Scriptures, new alternatives for special occasions, some significant additions and changes. At the same time, every effort has been made to keep the book concise and compact to maximize its usefulness. The formulas should be sufficient for the ordinary needs of the minister. They may be modified or supplemented by materials from the pastor's private collection or his own preparation. Some who stress liberty in prayer and preaching dislike set forms, preferring spontaneity and a free style as they worship. If the spiritual vitality of a church is maintained there need be no fear that these forms will become lifeless rituals. The use of forms should never become merely formal. And if the use of forms adds beauty and dignity to the atmosphere of sacredness, who can object? May the blessing of God attend all who glean from this manual, enabling it them to know what to say and how to say it. This is made also for allowing them to know what to do and how to do it especially as the occasion requires. Gratitude is expressed to many pastors and contributors for this volume. Includes the: worship service, baptism, communion, funerals, anointing services, healing services, membership, installation, baby and child dedication, consecration services, ceremonies for buildings and visitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together twelve scholars from a variety of scholarly fields including biblical studies, history, theology, sociology, anthropology, and missiology in a multi-disciplinary exploration of themes related to women's leadership within the three branches of the renewal movement: Holiness, Pentecostal and Charismatic traditions. These scholars - women and men - from both within and outside the traditions, draw on various methodologies including hermeneutics, ethnography, critical theory, and historical analysis to explore the experiences and contributions of women from the movement's inception to the present. They keep before us the challenges that still impact women's full participation as equal partners in ministry and leadership on both the American and global scene. The volume looks at the multiple roots of women's marginalization within the renewal movement while suggesting progressive solutions that take seriously the social locations of Pentecostal and Charismatic congregations and the theological foundations on which the movement has been built. At the same time, it locates these discussions within the broader postmodern realities facing the church as it attempts to faithfully live out its witness to the biblical truth that both male and female are created in the God's image and endowed with the capacity to work creatively toward the unfolding of the Kingdom.

Book excerpt: In COGIC History The dark Years Dr. Owens examines a period of transition in the history of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC). This period includes the years 1961-1968, from the death of the founder, Bishop C. H. Mason, to the installation of the first Presiding Bishop. This is the first scholarly reconstruction of the events of this period. The author uses the resulting case study as the basis for an analysis of the leadership styles and organizational types, which precipitated, endured, and resolved this period of transformation in one of America's greatest religious organizations.
