In The Chronology of Water, Lidia Yuknavitch, a lifelong swimmer and Olympic hopeful escapes her raging father and alcoholic and suicidal mother when she accepts a swimming scholarship which drug and alcohol addiction eventually cause her to lose. What follows is promiscuous sex with both men and women, some of them famous, and some of it S&M, and Lidia discovers the power of her sexuality to help her forget her pain. The forgetting doesn’t last, though, and it is her hard-earned career as a writer and a teacher, and the love of her husband and son, that ultimately create the life she needs to survive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although numerous disciplines recognize multiple ways of conceptualizing time, Stefan Tanaka argues that scholars still overwhelmingly operate on chronological and linear Newtonian or classical time that emerged during the Enlightenment. This short, approachable book implores the humanities and humanistic social sciences to actively embrace the richness of different times that are evident in non-modern societies and have become common in several scientific fields throughout the twentieth century. Tanaka first offers a history of chronology by showing how the social structures built on clocks and calendars gained material expression. Tanaka then proposes that we can move away from this chronology by considering how contemporary scientific understandings of time might be adapted to reconceive the present and pasts. This opens up a conversation that allows for the possibility of other ways to know about and re-present pasts. A multiplicity of times will help us broaden the historical horizon by embracing the heterogeneity of our lives and world via rethinking the complex interaction between stability, repetition, and change. This history without chronology also allows for incorporating the affordances of digital media.

Book excerpt: Despite the fact that the name of many characters mentioned in the Old Testament, like David, King of Israel, have been recently confirmed by archaeology as well as their epoch and the events in which they were involved, most archaeologists continue to deny the historicity of the Bible they view as pious fiction or a mythical account. They argue that the major events in the Bible such as the victory of Abraham against Chedorlaomer, an unknown king of Elam around 2000 BCE, the victory of Moses against an unknown Pharaoh around 1500 BCE or the victory of Esther, an unknown Persian Queen, against an unknown vizier of Xerxes, never existed because they left absolutely no evidence. They also explain that according to what we know today, these events could not have occurred. These logical arguments are impressive but a precise chronological analysis based on absolute dates, coupled with a rigorous historical investigation, shows that all those major events really took place at the dates and places indicated.

It concludes with the Continental Congress extending the so-called Olive Branch Petition to King George III of Great Britain in a final attempt to avert the American Revolution. During this period Europe saw the Protestant Reformation and numerous wars, especially the destructive 30 Years' War of 1618-48, while the Islamic world extended its borders and China made outstanding technological and economic advances.

Book excerpt: In these multiple excursions through recent artist film-installations, Daniel Birnbaum pursues a problem that preoccupied Deleuze in post-war cinema: what is the logic of this peculiar time ?after finitude?, based neither in God nor Man, salvation nor destiny; and what does it mean for our brains and our lives to invent new ways to make it visible? With a light wry wit, he thus renews a question, at once aesthetic and philosophical, still very much with us.John Rajchman, Philosopher, Columbia UniversityBoth a deep insight into the future and a protest against forgetting (Eric Hobsbawm), Daniel Birnbaum's essay Chronology is quite simply the best art book of the year.Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-director of exhibitions and director of international programs, Serpentine Gallery A philosophical essay on time, phenomenology and beyond, Daniel Birnbaum?s Chronology was reviewed in frieze as a ?compelling and sophisticated take on the common theme of Deleuzian immanence.? Brian Dillon, writer and criticWhereas many theoretical books littering the bookshops of art institutions are laudations of excess, Daniel Birnbaum?s convictions presented in Chronology cut a way through the ?caesuras of non-meaning and blankness into the thick web of sense.? The works of artists such as Paul Chan, Stan Douglas, Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Doug Aitken, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Tacita Dean, Darren Almond, Tobias Rehberger, Pierre Huyghe, and Philippe Parreno are scrutinized as so many attempts to capture the very dialectic of time itself. The book can be seen as ?an exploration of the crystallization of time that uses phenomenology as a pretext for saying things about artworks that create their own theories?.Fully illustrated, this 2nd edition features a new introduction where the author reflects on the book?s critical reception and further extends Deleuzian ideas to the fields of art and film. In his afterword on Paul Chan, Daniel Birnbaum discusses a new sense of messianic time, a new chronology, as experienced with The 7 Lights series by the artist. In addition to annotated artwork illustrations, the book contains a special insert by Paul Chan: twelve original drawings capturing the spatial metaphors evocated in the text. The book also features flip-book sequences from two films (Lady of Shanghai, 1947, Enter the Dragon, 1973) which elaborate on the Deleuzian themes of mirrors, death, and the crystallization of time.Daniel Birnbaum?s Chronology has become a productive point of reference and a source of inspiration for critics, curators, and ? perhaps more surprisingly ? dancers and choreographers. It has been reviewed extensively across Europe and has been translated into Russian and French, with German and Italian editions forthcoming.Daniel Birnbaum is Director of the Stadelschule and its Portikus gallery in Frankfurt am Main. A contributing editor of Artforum, he is the author of several books on art and philosophy, including The Hospitality of Presence: Problems of Otherness in Husserl?s Phenomenology (1998). He co-curated the 50th Venice Biennale (2003) and the 1st Moscow Biennale (2005). He is the co-organizer, with Christine Macel, of Airs de Paris (2007), an exhibition that celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Centre Pompidou.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This helpful reference offers a timeline of ancient Greece’s political and military history. This chronological history begins with the necessarily approximate course of events in Bronze and early Iron Age, as estimated by the most reliable scholarship and the legendary accounts of this period. From the Persian Wars onwards, a year-by-year chronology is constructed from the ancient historical sources—and where possible, a day-by-day narrative is given. The geographical scope expands as the horizons of the Greek world and colonization increased, with reference to developments in politico-military events in the Middle Eastern (and later Italian) states that came into contact with Greek culture. From the expansion of the Greek world across the region under Alexander, the development of all the relevant Greek/Macedonian states is covered. The text is divided into events per geographical area for each date, cross-referencing where needed. Detailed accounts are provided for battles and political crises where the sources allow this—and where not much is known for certain, the different opinions of historians are referenced. The result is a coherent, accessible, and accurate reference to what happened and when.

Book excerpt: Understand this highly debated flash point for scientific debate, academic criticism, and common confusion with this unique presentation. Delve into the technical aspects of the chronology, historicity, and significance of understanding this landmark event, including what we can learn from the Hebrew words used to describe it. Examine the numerous geological, geophysical, and paleontological indications pointing to the reality and global scope of the Flood. Learn how and why the authors' exhaustive research began, putting forth objectives, criticisms they would address, and identifying obstacles to be resolved. The Flood as described in the Book of Genesis not only shaped the global landscape, it is an event that literally forms our understanding of early biblical history. Now an experienced team of scientists and theologians has written a definitive account of the Genesis Flood with detailed research into the original biblical text and evidences unlocked by modern science and study. Often recounted and discounted as just a myth or children's story, what we find with deeper study is instead a cataclysmic event, one that truly wiped out life on our planet with the exception of those preserved through God's plan. The devastation the Genesis Flood wreaked upon a rebellious world remains an important part of the biblical narrative we should understand for what it was - a divine act of judgment on a sin-immersed world.
