Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to examine the controversial Qur'anic phrase which divides Christianity and Islam. According to the majority of modern Muslims and Christians, the Qur'an denies the crucifixion of Jesus, and with it, one of the most sacred beliefs of Christianity. However, it is only mentioned in one verse - 'They did not kill him and they did not crucify him, rather, it only appeared so to them' - and contrary to popular belief, its translation has been the subject of fierce debate among Muslims for centuries. This innovative work is the first book devoted to the issue, delving deeply into largely ignored Arabic sources, which suggest that the origins of the conventional translation may lie within the Christian Church. Arranged along historical lines, and covering various Muslim schools of thought, from Sunni to Sufi, "The Crucifixion and the Qur'an" unravels the crucial dispute that separates the World's two principal faiths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to rethink the multilayered and polyvalent Christology of the Qur’ān against the intersecting of competing peripheral Christianities, anti-Jewish Christian polemics, and the making of a new Arab state in the 7th-century Near East? To what extent may this help us to decipher, moreover, the intricate redactional process of the quranic corpus? And can we unearth from any conclusions as to the tension between a messianic-oriented and a prophetic-guided religious thought buried in the document? By analysing, first, the typology and plausible date of the Jesus texts contained in the Qur’ān (which implies moving far beyond both the habitual chronology of the Qur’ān and the common thematic division of the passages in question) and by examining, in the second place, the Qur’ān’s earliest Christology via-à-vis its later (and indeed much better known) Muhamadan kerygma, the present study answers these crucial questions and, thereby, sheds new light on the Qur’ān’s original sectarian milieu and pre-canonical development.

Book excerpt: Images of Jesus Christ in Islam 2nd Edition provides a general introduction to the question of Jesus Christ in Islam and a dialogical discussion of this issues' importance for Christian-Muslim relations. Its originality lies in its comprehensive presentation of relevant sources and research and its discussion of Islamic images of Christ in the wider context of Muslim-Christian relations. Oddbjørn Leirvik provides a comprehensive introduction to a breadth of Muslim traditions through an examination of interpretations of Jesus throughout history, whilst also examining historic tensions between Islam and Christianity. This book's distinctive contribution lies in its dialogical perspective in the perennial area of interest of Islam and Christian-Muslim relations.

Book excerpt: The religion founded by Mohammad gives primacy to the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Moses, and, although it may be a surprise to many Christians, considers Jesus one of the prominent religious figures of Islam. The Islamic Jesus is a book for all those who are interested in Christology, in which Daniel Deleanu brings together both canonical and traditional Islamic texts, adding a new facet to the image of Jesus in this often misunderstood religion. Deleanu shows that there are substantial discrepancies between the canonical and the apocryphal portraits of Jesus in Islam. Alongside the authoritative Koranic stories of Jesus, this anthology presents traditional accounts from the Hadith and other less known sources, whom Daniel Deleanu has collected and co-translated to produce a genuine Islamic gospel.

Book excerpt: This text offers a presentation of faith in Jesus Christ as it developed between the Council of Chalcedon (AD 451) and the advance of Islam in the Nile region. The period begins in Alexandria, leading to Ethiopia, where we see an extraordinary example of a synthesis of Judaism and Christianity. The book covers a variety of theological work by poets, exegetes, philosophers and others, offering the reader a vivid picture of the state of Christian faith in the Nile and beyond before the Islamic conquest. Particular attention is paid to Jewish influence in pre-Islamic Arabia and to recent discoveries of literary texts and religious art.

Book excerpt: The necessity of a religious dialogue between Christians and Muslims these days has come to mind very often for a lot of reasons – especially in the process of globalization. What happened on September 11, 2001 and its consequences have reinforced the necessity. Not only a religion but also its followers, numbering more than a billion people, run the risk of falling into disrepute thereby.Islamic teaching according to the latest religion coming from Abraham confirms the previous religions. Islam is the only religion after Christ which recognizes in Jesus not only the Word of God, but also sees in Jesus a sign of God's love and mercy. The following verse is a witness to the importance of the Jewish and the Christian belief from the Islamic view."Say ye: "We believe in God, and the revelation given to us, and to Ibrahim, Isma'il, Ishaq, Ya'qub, and the Tribes, and that given to Musa and 'Isa, and that given to (all) Prophets from their Lord: we make no difference between one and another of them: and we bow to God (in Islam)." [2:136] The diversity in God's offer is a wealth which we absolutely must recognize today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible is the foundational text for the Byzantine Empire. The papers of this volume explore its reception through appropriation, adaptation and interpretation as articulated in all aspects of Byzantine society. Several sessions at the ISBL held in Vienna, 6 to 10 July 2014 on 'The Reception of the Bible in Greco-Roman Tradition,' 'The Bible between Jews and Christians in Byzantium,' 'Biblical Scholarship in Byzantium,' and 'Biblical Foundations of Byzantine Identity and Culture' built the basis of this volume. Various angles shed light on the Byzantine experience of the Bible. The wide range of source materials that inform the contributions to this volume—from manuscripts and military handbooks to lead seals and pilgrim guides— allows insights into a vivid liturgical tradition, which shapes Orthodox Christianity up today. As a thoroughly Christianized society, the Bible had sunk deep into the cultural DNA of Byzantium. The volume shows the multitude of strategies for the engagement with the Biblical text and the manifold ways in which the Bible message was experienced, articulated and brought to life on a daily basis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a generation and more, the contribution of Christian theology to interreligious understanding has been a subject of debate. Some think of theological perspectives are of themselves inherently too narrow to support interreligious learning, and argue for an approach that is neutral or, on a more popular level, grounded simply open-minded direct experience. In response, comparative theology argues that theology, as faith seeking understanding, offers a vital perspective and a way of advancing interreligious dialogue, aided rather than hindered by commitments; theological perspectives can both complement and step beyond the study of religions by methods detached and merely neutral. Thus comparative theology has been successful in persuading many that interreligious learning from one faith perspective to another is both possible and worthwhile, and so the work of comparative theology has become more recognized and established globally. With this success there has come to the fore new challenges regarding method: How does one do comparative theological work in a way that is theologically grounded, genuinely open to learning from the other, sophisticated in pursuing comparisons, and fruitful on both the academic and practical levels? How To Do Comparative Theology therefore contributes to the maturation of method in the field of comparative theological studies, learning across religious borders, by bringing together essays drawing on different Christian traditions of learning, Judaism and Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism, the wisdom of senior scholars, and also insights from a younger generation of scholars who have studied theology and religion in new ways, and are more attuned to the language of the “spiritual but not religious.” The essays in this volume show great diversity in method, and also—over and again and from many angles—coherence in intent, a commitment to one learning from the other, and a confidence that one’s home tradition benefits from fair and unhampered learning from other and very different spiritual and religious traditions. It therefore shows the diversity and coherence of comparative theology as an emerging discipline today.
