God has always had a people distinctly different from the peoples of the world""not better but different. The entire Bible is a cohesive, comprehensive canon of sanctification, culminating in the gospel of Jesus Christ and him crucified. What we commonly call the "high priestly" prayer of Jesus Christ is his prayer for all who believe in him. "Sanctify (or set apart) them through thy Truth: thy Word is Truth" (John 17:17). A Christian is one who lives by every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God and not according to the standards of this world system. True Christianity is Christ consciousness. Only an awareness of the cross of Jesus Christ in the harrowing truth of its raw austerity can keep me loyal and accountable to God's gift of amazing grace in his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. His cross is my cross, and it is your cross. Only the preaching of the cross of Jesus Christ can keep the miracle of redemption alive. Our identity with the death, burial, and resurrection of the LORD Jesus Christ is what makes us different. We are the continuity of the love of God in Christ extended to the worst of humanity; truly, a love not of the world. A Christian is one who lives to perpetuate this love of God in the earth. Conversely, what this book calls mainstream Christianity in America fundamentally lives for themselves. Someone must say so. Someone must tell contemporary, worldly conciliatory, and carnally compromised Christianity that God is a Holy Spirit whom the LORD Jesus Christ emphatically said the world cannot receive (see John 14:17). In this age of all-permissive grace, a Christian is identified by their living according to the truth of God's comprehensive Word and by a marked separation from this world system. "If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him" (see 1 John 2:15). Indeed, and as this book without apology declares, the love of the Father is Christ.

Book excerpt: What is the Sermon on the Mount? In Matthew 5-7, Christ climbs a mountain with his disciples and from there gives his most famous sermon. He starts by describing those who are members of his heavenly kingdom (Matt 5:3-10). They are the poor in spirit, the mourners, the meek, those who hunger for righteousness, the merciful, etc. Those who are truly heavenly citizens don't just have a profession of faith but experience a faith that changes their life and character-they are new creations in Christ (2 Cor 5:17).Christ warns those listening to his sermon of potential deception-if their righteousness was not greater than the Pharisees and teachers of the law, they would not enter the kingdom of heaven (Matt 5:20). The Pharisees simply had a legalistic, external religion that had not changed their inner character. They were deceived, and sadly, many religious people are deceived today. Like the Pharisees, they perform their acts of righteousness to be seen and honored by others, instead of to be seen and honored by God (Matt 6:1-8, 16-18). Throughout Christ's sermon, he describes the righteousness of his kingdom citizens. They must practice honesty instead of deception (Matt 5:33-36), forgiveness instead of vengeance (Matt 5:21-26, 6:14), purity instead of lust (Matt 5:27-30), simplicity instead of indulgence (Matt 6:19-24), prayerfulness instead of worry (Matt 6:9-13, 25-34), and much, much more. Christ concludes his sermon by warning those listening that not everybody who calls Christ, "Lord" will enter the kingdom, but only those who do the will of the Father (Matt 7:21-23). Many will simply listen and not act on Christ's words, and they will be exposed at the final judgment (Matt 7:26-27). But by focusing on the audience (disciples), the timeline of what they knew, the introduction and each part of the sermon (not to mention Matthew's overall purpose, Old Testament prophecies, New Testament theology, the grace gospel, etc.) Elkins shows Jesus is addressing Kingdom greatness, not entrance. The Bible knows nothing of a present, or present-not-yet, form of the Kingdom. The Kingdom Jesus is talking about is the one He, John, and the disciples had been preaching, the one understood by the Palestinian audience, the literal future, earthly Kingdom of Messiah on earth. Jesus will get around to addressing Kingdom entrance in His evangelistic close, but not at all in the manner it's usually taken. Rather, He gives the clearest, most cogent refutation of so-called lordship salvation, and actually presents the John 3:16 message as the means of entrance. If keeping the words of the sermon were necessary for 'entrance, ' the one thing it will have succeeded in doing is making sure no one will enter the Kingdom! If, on the other hand, it's about 'inheriting' the Kingdom as a possession--to rule and be great there--it works wonderfully well, and is the great discipleship primer it's intended to be.
