Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Catechisms, Teaching Religion makes two broad arguments. First, the sixteenth century witnessed a fundamental transformation in Christians’, Catholic and Evangelical, conceptualization of the nature of knowledge of Christianity and the media through which that knowledge was articulated and communicated. Christians had shared a sense that knowledge might come through visions, images, liturgy; catechisms taught that knowledge of ‘Christianity’ began with texts printed on a page. Second, codicil catechisms sought not simply to dissolve the material distinction between codex and person, but to teach catechumens to see specific words together as texts. The pages of catechisms were visual—they confound precisely that constructed modern bipolarity, word/image, or, conversely, that modern bipolarity obscures what sixteenth-century catechisms sought to do.

Arranged alphabetically by designer's name, the book contains over 260 biographical profiles. Entries are illustrated by key typefaces taken from a wide range of sources, including type specimens, original posters, private press editions and magazine covers, and also give a list of work and, where applicable, further reading references and a website address. An essential reference for typographers, graphic designers and students, the book also features a full index and eight short texts by leading typographers - Jonathan Barnbrook, Erik van Blokland, Clive Bruton, John Downer, John Hudson, Jean Francois Porchez, Erik Spiekermann and Jeremy Tankard - that cover a variety of different aspects of type design, including typeface revivals, font piracy, designing fonts for corporate identities and the role of nationality in type design."--BOOK JACKET

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Exchange in the Early Modern Book World presents new research on several aspects of the movement and exchange of books between countries, languages and confessions. It considers elements of the international book trade, the circulation and collection of texts, the practice of translation and the diffusion and exchange of technical and cultural knowledge. Commercial and logistical aspects of the early modern book trade are considered, as are the relationships between local markets and the internationally-minded firms which sought to meet their expectations. The barriers to the movement of books across borders – political, linguistic, confessional, cultural – are explored, as are the means by which these barriers were surmounted.
