Book Synopsis A History of North Carolina in the Proprietary Era, 1629-1729 by : Lindley S. Butler
Download or read book A History of North Carolina in the Proprietary Era, 1629-1729 written by Lindley S. Butler and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2022-03-10 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Lindley S. Butler traverses oft-noted but little understood events in the political and social establishment of the Carolina colony. In the wake of the English Civil Wars in the mid-seventeenth century, King Charles II granted charters to eight Lords Proprietors to establish civil structures, levy duties and taxes, and develop a vast tract of land along the southeastern Atlantic coast. Butler argues that unlike the New England theocracies and Chesapeake plantocracy, the isolated colonial settlements of the Albemarle—the cradle of today's North Carolina—saw their power originate neither in the authority of the church nor in wealth extracted through slave labor, but rather in institutions that emphasized political, legal, and religious freedom for white male landholders. Despite this distinct pattern of economic, legal, and religious development, however, the colony could not avoid conflict among the diverse assemblage of Indigenous, European, and African people living there, all of whom contributed to the future of the state and nation that took shape in subsequent years. Butler provides the first comprehensive history of the proprietary era in North Carolina since the nineteenth century, offering a substantial and accessible reappraisal of this key historical period.

Book Synopsis Memories of Carolinian Immigrants by : Andreas Lixl
Download or read book Memories of Carolinian Immigrants written by Andreas Lixl and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2009-05-16 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about identity and remembrance. This anthology presents personal narratives and historical photographs that illuminate the diversity of immigrant experiences in North and South Carolina since 1700. The broad focus of the book encompasses all walks of life and documents three centuries of social, political, artistic, and cultural history. The chapters follow historical timelines starting with colonial experiences leading up to the American Revolution, followed by immigrant accounts before and during the Civil War, experiences in the New South, and memories of twentieth century immigrants and the most recent arrivals. The common denominators of the autobiographies, diaries, and letters hinge on the confluence of American patriotism and immigrant pride, coupled with old world loyalties and new world ambitions that reflect the demographic shift from European to Asian and Hispanic immigrants in the American Southeast.

Book Synopsis A New Voyage to Carolina by : John Lawson
Download or read book A New Voyage to Carolina written by John Lawson and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-15 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Lawson's amazingly detailed yet lively book is easily one of the most valuable of the early histories of the Carolinas, and it is certainly one of the best travel accounts of the early eighteenth-century colonies. An inclusive account of the manners and customs of the Indian tribes of that day, it is also a minute report of the soil, climate, trees, plants, animals, and fish in the Carolinas. Lawson's observation is keen and thorough; his style direct and vivid. He misses nothing and recounts all -- from the storms at sea to his impressions of New York in 1700, the trip down the coast to Charleston, and his travels from there into North Carolina with his Indian guides. The first edition of this work was published in London in 1709. While various editions followed in the eighteenth century -- including two in German -- this edition is a true copy of the original and is the first to include a comprehensive index. It also contains "The Second Charter," "An Abstract of the Constitution of Carolina," Lawson's will, and several previously unpublished letters written by Lawson. A number of DeBry woodcuts of John White's drawings of Indian life, sketches of the beasts of Carolina which appeared in the original 1709 edition, and Lawson's map contribute additional interest to this volume.
