Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes Christian presentations of Christ for Muslims in the most creative period of Christian-Muslim dialogue, the first half of the ninth and the second half of the twentieth century. In these two historical moments, Christians made a serious effort to present their faith in Christ in terms that take into account Muslim perceptions of him, with a view to bridging the gap between Muslim and Christian convictions produced by Muslim rejection of Christ's divine sonship and the death of Christ by crucifixion. A comparative study is made of the contributions of three apologists from the early ninth century--Abu Qurra, Abu Ra'ita, and 'Ammar al-Basri--and three twentieth-century apologists--Kenneth Cragg, John Hick and Hans Kung--in order to seek a model for dialogue on Christology between Christians and Muslims in the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the religious beliefs and practices of the other raises hermeneutic questions on the extent to which the dialogical call to openness is related to commitment, the meaning of religious identity, and whether openness to the beliefs of the other poses a threat to one's religious identity. If interreligious learning demands that the interlocutors unite their attitude of commitment and openness, how does this occur without the loss of alterity? This book addresses these questions within the context of Christian-Muslim dialogue on Christology as an exercise in learning - a new form of dialogue which leads Christians and Muslims to the discovery of common values such as prayer and submission to God; peace and peaceful co-existence, and solidarity with the poor and marginalised.

Book excerpt: Lebanon is a significant region of encounter between Muslims and Christians in the Middle East. This book examines how Christian-Muslim dialogue is envisioned by four present-day Lebanese thinkers: Great Ayatollah Muhammad Husayn Fadlallah and Doctor Mahmoud Ayoub from the Shiite tradition, and Metropolitan Georges Khodr and Doctor, Father Mouchir Basile Aoun from the Eastern Christian Antiochian tradition. The study seeks to bring the four thinkers into dialogue on a number of topics, including doctrinal themes, ethical principles and the issue of political power-sharing in Lebanon. All four thinkers make several suggestions for facilitating mutual understanding and transcending old debates. The concept of God and the principle of neighbourly love seem to have particular potential as fruitful bases for further dialogue.

Book Synopsis Theological Issues in Christian-Muslim Dialogue by : Charles Tieszen
Download or read book Theological Issues in Christian-Muslim Dialogue written by Charles Tieszen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-06-08 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theological Issues in Christian-Muslim Dialogue addresses the main theological topics of discussion that appear in Christian-Muslim engagement. Many of these topics originate in the medieval period and the earliest encounters between Christians and Muslims. Even so, the topics persist in contemporary contexts of dialogue and engagement. Christians and Muslims still discuss whether or not God should be understood as strictly one or as a Trinity-in-Unity, and debates over the nature of revelation or prophethood remain. Theological reflection, therefore, must continue to be brought to bear on these topics in light of their history and in view of their applicability to growing contexts of inter-religious engagement. Theological Issues in Christian-Muslim Dialogue is a comprehensive theological sourcebook for students learning about Christian-Muslim relations and practitioners engaged in Christian-Muslim dialogue.

Book excerpt: The Qur’an identifies Jesus as a sign of God, and he holds a place as one of the most important prophets in Islam. Looking at Jesus in Islam also reveals both deep differences from and rich connections to the view of Jesus in Christianity. In The Other Prophet, Mouhanad Khorchide and Klaus von Stosch explore and explain the position of the Qur’anic Jesus, with one scholar working from the Muslim and the other from the Christian theological perspective. Their combined research presents a history of Jesus’ presence in the Qur’an and provides astute observations to deepen the understanding of both Christians and Muslims. Here we find that a common view of Jesus from the Muslim and Christian sides is not only possible, but also expands our understanding of Jesus and his message.

Book Synopsis Jesus and the Incarnation by : David Emmanuel Singh
Download or read book Jesus and the Incarnation written by David Emmanuel Singh and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus and the Incarnation Reflections of Christians from Islamic Contexts In the dialogues of Christians with Muslims nothing is more fundamental than the Cross, the Incarnation and the Resurrection of Jesus. An open and honest conversation on these is a necessity as Christians all over the world meet with Muslims on a daily basis. Building on the volume on the Cross, published in 2009, this book contains voices of Christians living in various 'Islamic contexts' and reflecting on the Incarnation of Jesus. The aim of these reflections is constructive and the hope is that the papers weaved around the notion of 'the Word' will not only promote dialogue among Christians on the roles of the Person and the Book but, also, create a positive environment for their conversations with Muslim neighbors.
