It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical En cyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977 - 1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivision has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathe matics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, engineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.

The impact of new technology, from electromag netic distance measurements to the use of artificial satellites, has been great, and is still largely to be felt. These changes have forced the practitioners of the ancient art of Earth measurement to alter their way of thinking about the space that surrounds us, something fundamentally more difficult than absorbing a new technology. A key influence in this modem change in geodetic thinking has been the work of Antonio Marussi, in his scientific publications from 1947 onwards, through his students and collaborators at the Uni versity of Trieste, and in the series of symposia on three-dimensional Geodesy which he organised with his great friend and collaborator, Martin Hotine. His influence on the latter, stemming from their first meeting at the General Assembly of the International Association of Geodesy in Oslo in 1948, was remarkable in itself, leading as it did to the ultimate publication of Hotine's Mathematical Geodesy in 1969.

Also, two books deal with a special interpolation problem, the so-called Birkhoff interpolation, written by G.G. Lorentz, K. Jetter, S.D. Riemenschneider (1983) and Y.G. Shi (2003). The classical books on interpolation address numerous negative results, i.e., - sultsondivergentinterpolationprocesses,usuallyconstructedoversomeequidistant system of nodes. The present book deals mainly with new results on convergent - terpolation processes in uniform norm, for algebraic and trigonometric polynomials, not yet published in other textbooks and monographs on approximation theory and numerical mathematics. It presents new material and opens the philosophical problem of space anew, crossing the disciplines of mathematics, history of science and philosophy. With a Kantian starting point Weyl asks: among all the infinitely many conceivable metrical spaces, which one applies to the physical world? In agreement with general relativity, Weyl acknowledges that the metric can quantitatively vary with the physical situation. Despite this freedom, Weyl “deduces”, with group-theoretical technicalities, that there is only one “kind” of legitimate metric. This construction was then decisive for the development of gauge theories. Nevertheless, the question of the foundations of the metric of physical theories is only a piece of a wider epistemological problem. Contributing authors mark out the double trajectory that goes through Weyl’s texts, from natural science to philosophy and conversely, always through the mediation of mathematics. Readers may trace the philosophical tradition to which Weyl refers and by which he is inspired (Kant, Husserl, Fichte, Leibniz, Becker etc.), and explore the mathematical tradition (Riemann, Helmholtz, Lie, Klein) that permitted Weyl to elaborate and solve his mathematical problem of space. The number of books treating the subject, however, is limited. This monograph brings together some results involving the asymptotic behaviour of orthogonal polynomials when the degree tends to infinity, assuming only a basic knowledge of real and complex analysis. An extensive treatment, starting with special knowledge of the orthogonality measure, is given for orthogonal polynomials on a compact set and on an unbounded set. Another possible approach is to start from properties of the coefficients in the three-term recurrence relation for orthogonal polynomials. This is done using the methods of (discrete) scattering theory. A new method, based on limit theorems in probability theory, to obtain asymptotic formulas for some polynomials is also given. Various consequences of all the results are described and applications are given ranging from random matrices and birth-death processes to discrete Schrödinger operators, illustrating the close interaction with different branches of applied mathematics.
