Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Buddhism Compared The general indifference with which researches in Buddhism have been regarded, more especially in Britain, is difficult to account for; as, irrespective of the importance of the subject from its extent and influence there are other matters of special interest connected with it, arising from the magnitude and antiquity of its architectural remains; its numerous inscriptions, upon coins, slabs and rocks, the key to the reading of which presents one of the most ingenious discoveries of modern study the coincidence in some of its historical events with western, chronology; and the light it throws upon a type of Speculation differing widely from that which is seen in the systems and philosophies of the Semitic and European nations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buddhism and Christianity: A Parallel and a Contrast IN endeavouring to sketch in so limited a space even the most salient features of the many sided religion of Buddhism it is possible that here and there I may have misrepresented it. If so, I hope the fault will be attributed to inad vertence, or rather to disadvantages under which I have worked. The sacred beliefs of any section of mankind are entitled to receive at our hands not only justice but kindly consideration, and a religion so vast and in some respects so wonderful as Buddhism ought to have much to commend it to our sympathy. Long and patient study of it has indeed greatly modified opinions originally formed concerning it, but it has only tended to increase respect for so earnest an effort of the intellect to solve the mystery of human life and destiny. The earlier portion was carefully revised by him, and as few corrections as possible have been made in the text of the remaining chapters. Probably, a final contrast between "the life eternal" of the Christian's hope and the Nirwána of the Buddhist writings would have been added, had the life of the veteran missionary been spared. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buddhism and Its Christian Critics Comparison is the best method of acquiring com prehension; and comprehension involves both the discrimination of contrasts and the recognition of Similarities. Differences are upon the Whole at once apparent While similarities are hidden; but the import of differences can, at the same time, not be appreciated until the similarities are seen. Thus, the discovery that the course of the moon and the fall of a stone are both phenomena of gravitation, becomes significant only when the difference of both phenomena can be traced to a difference of conditions. Book excerpt: The last century witnessed a gradual but profound transformation of the West's religious landscape. In today's context of diversity, people are often influenced by, and sometimes even claim to belong to, more than one religious tradition. Buddhism and Christianity is a particularly prevalent and fascinating combination. This book is the first detailed exploration of Buddhist Christian dual belonging, engaging - from both Buddhist and Christian perspectives - the questions that arise, and drawing on extensive interviews with well-known individuals in the vanguard of this important and growing phenomenon. The book looks at whether it is possible to be authentically Buddhist and authentically Christian given the differences in beliefs and practices. It asks whether Buddhist Christians are irrational, religiously schizophrenic or spiritually superficial; or whether the thought and practice of Buddhism and Christianity can be reconciled in a way that makes possible deep commitment to both. Finally, the book considers whether the influence of Buddhist Christians on each of these traditions is something to be regretted or celebrated.

Book excerpt: An honest, unflinching tale of re-finding one's faith, from one of the world's most famous theologians Without Buddha I Could Not Be a Christian narrates how esteemed theologian, Paul F. Knitter overcame a crisis of faith by looking to Buddhism for inspiration. From prayer to how Christianity views life after death, Knitter argues that a Buddhist standpoint can encourage a more person-centred conception of Christianity, where individual religious experience comes first, and liturgy and tradition second. Moving and revolutionary, this book will inspire Christians everywhere.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mysticism: Christian and Buddhist This Series is committed to a re-examination of all those sides of human endeavor which the specialist was taught to believe he could safely leave aside. It interprets present and past events impinging on human life in our growing World Age and envisages what man may yet attain when summoned by an unbend'ing inner necessity to the quest of what is most exalted in him. Its purpose is to offer new vistas in terms of world and human development while refusing to betray the intimate correlation between universality and individuality, dynamics and form, freedom and destiny. Each author treats his subject from the broad perspective Of the world community, not from the judaeo-christian, Western or Eastern viewpoint alone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light of Asia and the Light of the World: A Comparison of the Legend, the Doctrine,& the Ethics of the Buddha, With the Story, the Doctrine,& the Ethics of Christ There is reason to believe that a large class even of Christian people have a most exaggerated idea of the excellence of the great non-Christian religions, and the extent to which their teachings agree with those of the Gospel of Christ. This remark applies with special force at present to the case of Buddhism, in which, for various reasons, very many intelligent people, of every variety of religious opinion, have of late years come to feel a very special interest. Such erroneous impressions in the case of many are doubtless due to a very pardonable ignorance or misapprehension of the real facts which bear upon the question. The data upon which one might base an intelligent judgment have not been as accessible to the general reading public as were to be desired. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1894 this book was one of the first introductions of Buddhism to the West. In particular the topic is approached from a Christian point of view, showing parallels between the teachings of the two faiths and between their respective holy figures. This edition contains the beautiful original images and is often recommended to Christians wishing to learn more about the teachings of Buddhism. Paul Carus had an obvious and deep respect for Buddhism and other Eastern traditions and that shines through in this work. It contains fine descriptions of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, as well as many parables of the Buddha. Where documents have been translated, while they would doubtless have been translated differently these days, they have been done so with great sensitivity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you like firebrand ministers delivering strongly worded sermons, then you'll want to dive in to Mohammed, Buddha, and Christ: Four Lectures on Natural and Revealed Religion by Marcus Dods, a theologian and professor of New College in Edinburgh. This book presents four of his lectures about Mohammed, Buddha and Christ and the religions they founded, but the book is not a comparative study of the respective practices of the three great religions. In keeping with his position in the United Free Church of Scotland, Dods forcefully argues for the moral superiority of Christianity. Dods presents two lectures on Islam. Some religious practices of Islam are discussed and praised, like regularity of prayer, almsgiving, and religious holidays. But most of the two lectures is devoted to things that Dods finds deficient about the religion. Dods is critical of the concept of Paradise and criticizes polygamy and marriage laws. He also condemns Mohammed's treatment of women. The second lecture on Islam begins with a brief historical review of the religions of Arabia. He offers the opinions of philosophers like Voltaire and Carlyle and then vigorously disagrees with them. He writes that there is little to admire about Mohammed, and declares the religion was spread by violence and conquest rather than due to positive virtues. However, Dods does praise Islamic contributions to art and literature. Dods is more circumspect about Buddhism. He describes the religion as one that is not devoted to a supernatural deity, and devotes several pages to relating the compelling story of Buddha's life . He praises Buddhists for their charitable natures, which he feels are similar to the ethics of Christians, however, Dods considers Buddhist philosophies as atheistic and leading to polytheism. The lecture on Christianity is entitled "The Perfect Religion." Dods sets up his argument by discussing what makes a religion real, true and the product of divine revelation. He concludes that Christianity is the one true religion and ends the book by surmising that the Arabs are too barbaric to properly receive Christian missionaries. These lectures contain arguments that will be shocking to some modern readers, while at the same time, some of Dods' arguments are still debated today. Mohammed, Buddha and Christ: Four Lectures on Natural and Revealed Religion is probably most useful to readers as a snapshot of Christian thought about other religions in 19th Century Europe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Influence of Buddhism on Primitive Christianity A short time ago a writer in the Revue des Deuce M ondes announced that the Nineteenth Century had experienced two great surprises. The first was the discovery, due to Colebrooke and the earlier Sanskrit scholars, that the poems of early Greece were not altogether original Jove and his Mount Olympus had been anticipated by Indra and his Mount Meru; the feats of Hercules had been matched by Bhima. Parnassus and Apollo and the Muses had proto types in Mount Govudun, redolent with the music of Krishna and the Gopis; and that even the great hordes of gods and men, and their muster to avenge the rape of a pretty woman, had been previously made into a great epic on the banks of the Ganges.
