The principal impetus for the promotion of a Jewish return to Zion was religious and began with the translation of the Bible from the Hebrew to English by Tindale. Because literature in the English language depicted Jews almost always in an unfavorable light, both British and American religious and political leaders were ambivalent about Jews. Nevertheless, the religious impulse to restore Israel became political in the twentieth century and succeeded with the establishment of the Jewish state in 1948.

Christian Zionism Examined emphatically asserts that the Bible provides absolutely no basis for this literal way of reading and understanding the prophetic word in the Holy Scriptures. God's promises of redemption and judgment to Old Testament Israel have never meant to be solely fulfilled to one particular ethnic people and geographical area; i.e., only modern Israel or only the Jewish people. Redemption and judgment are fulfilled in Christ. In him, those promises (or predictions) have received a final meaning for all nations, essentially for all creation. The completion of that fulfillment will take place upon his return; in the perfection of his kingdom or his universal rule; and in the final judgment.

They analyze the views of ordinary churchgoers and evangelical pastors to understand the religious, social, and political factors that lead the members of this religious community to support the State of Israel in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Through rigorous quantitative analyses and careful textual study of ordinary evangelicals' written comments, Inbari and Bumin aim to rectify misconceptions about who evangelical and born-again Christians are, about their sympathies toward Israel, Jewish people, and Palestinians, and about the sources of their foreign policy attitudes toward the conflict. Inbari and Bumin demonstrate that a generational divide is emerging within the evangelical community, one that substantially impacts evangelicals' attitudes toward Israel. They also show that frequent church attendance and certain theological beliefs have a profound impact on the evangelicals' preference of Israel over the Palestinians. Jesus' theology of the “good news of the kingdom of God” and apostolic testimony show that Christian Zionism perverts the gospel today in the same way that Judaizers perverted the gospel by adding the requirements of Judaism to the gospel in the first century. The Judaism-gospel conflict in the NT, therefore, is the biblical model used in this study for understanding a key historical setting of the early church and its apostolic documents. It provides a firm evangelical basis for evaluating Christian Zionism's retro-theology that returns to the pre-Christian religion of Judaism. The Judaism-gospel conflict in the NT is like an “elephant in the room” of evangelicals, due to an excessive Israel-influence among American evangelicals. Its resurrection exposes the Christian Zionist movement for what it is—a renewal of Judaism in the evangelical community today.The book features an evangelical “missionary viewpoint” in its analysis of the “perfect storm” of Israel-influence in American society and also in the evangelical community. The book gives the history of the emergence and ironic existence and influence of pseudo-Christian Zionism and the dispensational theology of J.N. Darby among evangelicals. The book's message is essential for helping evangelicals to think “Christianly” about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and come to a Christian view of the conflict. Just as the world-mission of the Church in the first century was jeopardized by the Judaizer's narrow Jewish-oriented gospel in the Gentile world, so it is in jeopardy again today with pseudo-Christian Zionism's Israel-centered gospel. It is important that evangelicals engage in a robust mission among 2.5 billion Muslims in the world today; they must hear Jesus' universal “good news of the kingdom of God.”
