Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Unity in Effort This book records some personal thoughts and beliefs resulting from such reading and listening to the views of others as is prae tically possible in and following the well occupied hours of an active business life. It includes quotations from the Bible, and from other boo-ks that have: been interesting and helpful. The repetitions that appear here and there throughout the book should aid in making its. Purpose clearer. It represents a conviction that every man and woman should acquire by individual effort such simple religious knowledge and personal faith as is essential to a well rounded life here and to a right preparation for what may be beyond; and that intelligent individual observation and thought will make plain the need for organized Christian unity in effort. In this age of religious unrest and craving for better things no one should hold in selfish privacy any thought or experience that, if made public, might in any way be helpful to another. If what is here written shall help one ear nest and sincere seeker after truth to rise from an earthly atmosphere of indifference, dependence or doubt into a higher and purer life Of intelligent faith, this book will have justified its existence. This is due to several causes, the chief one being the conscious ness of the Churches that a divided Christendom does not witness to the unity that is in Christ and that a divided Church cannot accomplish the tasks that are everywhere challenging it. As a result of this conviction efforts are everywhere being made to remove those barriers that have for ages separated the many communions of the one Church and to find some basis for reunion on which all may achieve that oneness for which our Lord prayed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pathways to Christian Unity: A Free Church View We conclude therefore with a confident and urgent appeal for the wide extension of local Christian fellowship and co-operation and for a studied attempt (chap. 7) to bring the sepa rated denominations into formal union where that is already possible, and, for the rest, to make their thought and practice increasingly comprehensive till what is at present impossible shall itself come within their reach. For such a programme we believe the Church is ready in the providence of God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is hoped that Christian people who are not familiar with ecclesias tical terms or the history of the Church and her Councils, will find no difficulty in understanding any part of what is herein written. The effort has been conscientiously made to present a clear, straightforward statement of the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Unity and Its Recovery Some members of the English Church have endeavored to fix principles of approximation on the part of that communion with the Roman Church, one consequence of which has been the secession of large numbers of her best and ablest men to Rome. But this very result has shown how utterly futile must be any attempt to recon cile these two ecclesiastical systems. Among Protestants there have been, and continue to be, discussions upon the union of various sects and churches, and a very strong feeling of the evil of division prevails. Special interest is manifested in the subject at the present time, and it is supposed that the state of the popular religious mind is favorable to the consideration of any suggestions Offered for its solution. The interest that is felt on this subject generally, has essayed something like organization to secure the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Unity: Studies of Its Most Important Problems The volume is an earnest effort to solve the hard problems of Church Unity, and to reconcile the various parties to the controversies which distract Christendom. There IS an ever increasing number, who are weary of these fruitless contro versies and are eager to see their way to a better understand ing of the real issues. It is the hope of the author to encourage such, and above all to stimulate young men of courage and goodwill, to undertake this work of Christian Irenics, and to share in the study of its hard problems. May this volume, with all its defects, do something to ad vance the reunion of Christendom, a cause dear to the heart of Jesus, and to men of goodwill in all ages and nations and denominations of Christians. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels The title of the present volume is intended to indicate that, while it aims to be an exposition of the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ, it does not purpose to be a whole or final exposition of that Gospel. It looks forward definitely to a further and fuller expression of it. We have here to do with the Gospel, not in its developed utterance as that of the New Testament or of the Church, but only so far as it is contained in our canonical Gospels or can by ourselves be deduced from them. My own position is that, while the Gospel as an act or fact is complete in Jesus Christ Himself, the rationale of its operation in human salvation is best interpreted and stated by St. Paul. My true objective point has therefore been the completer construction of the Gospel according to St. Paul, to be treated in a volume to follow the present one. That the epistles of St. Paul are an interpretation only, and not a transformation nor even an essential modification, of the Gospel of our Lord is - next to the hope of casting a single new ray of light upon the nature of the Gospel itself - the point which I have most at heart to prove in the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Convictions: A Selection From the Responses of the Churches to the Report of the World Conference on Faith and Order, Held at Lausanne in 1927 For more than two weeks they discussed such subjects as the Nature of the Church, the Church's Common Confession of Faith, the Ministry and the Sacraments. They endeavoured to pierce below the surface of differing formulae, and to discover the measure of genuine agreement and disagreement in the underlying convictions. After more than two weeks' work, they produced a Report embodying the results they were able to achieve. This Report was sent to all the various Churches which had taken part in the Conference, with a request that they should consider it and express their opinions on it to the Continuation Committee. It is these "Responses of the Churches" to the Report of the 1927 Conference which are printed in this book - or, rather, such selection of them as provides material for future work. In a preliminary survey of these Responses, published in pamphlet form in 1930, it was truly said that: "One common note runs through the whole of the material received: it is that of gratitude for the work which the Lausanne Conference was enabled to accomplish; with this there comes a unanimous determination to continue in co-operation with the movement, and to encourage the Continuation Committee in going forward. There is also a general endorsement, often most cordially expressed, of the general method and principle which the movement has set itself to follow, abstaining from the promulgation of any formal scheme of reunion, and concentrating upon the common consideration of those things in which we agree, and those in which we differ." The Continuation Committee are truly grateful for all such expressions of goodwill, and had it been possible would gladly have published all the Responses in full, as at first they had hoped to do.
