Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author’s Introduction: As this book’s subtitle has it, it’s a “potpourri.” That expression can be defined as “a mixture of dried petals and spices placed in a bowl to perfume a room.” But, having just published—at New Reformation Press—a little culinary masterpiece (A Gastronomic Vade-Mecum), I am thinking in terms of the secondary definition: “an unusual or interesting mixture of ingredients.” Either way, you will surely enjoy this collection of essays. They are unusual and interesting—and they will perfume your thinking as to ultimate issues. A sampling of essays in the present collection: • Resurrection and Legal Evidence • Did Jesus Physically Rise from the Dead? • Chronological Contradictions in the Gospels? • A More Consistent Application of Literary “Higher Criticism” • A Short and Easie Method with Postmodernists • Law & Morality: Friends or Foes? • Demon Possession: A Brief Commentary • Transhumanism? • Muslims As Two-Faced • The Stereotypic Clergyman • On Innovative Theologians • Racism in American Lutheranism • Do Christian Children lose Contact with Reality? • Those Who Have Not Heard the Gospel: A Construct • Terrorism and Revolution: Are They Ever Justified? Professor Montgomery, who is an American, British, and French citizen and who resides in Strasbourg, France, is a polymath, the author of more than 60 books in 5 languages, and a world-renowned defender of classic Christian faith. His credentials include: • Ph.D. (U. Chicago), D.Théol. (U. Strasbourg, France), LL.D. (Cardiff U., Wales), plus 8 other academic degrees. • Professor Emeritus of Law and Humanities, University of Bedfordshire (U.K.); Distinguished Professor-at-Large, 1517: The Legacy Project (California, U.S.A.); Director, International Academy of Apologetics, Evangelism and Human Rights (Strasbourg, France). • Barrister-at-Law (England and Wales); Avocat à la Cour (Paris); Member of the California, District of Columbia, Virginia, and Washington State bars, and the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States; Certified Fraud Examiner. • Honorary Chairman, Academic Board, International Institute for Religious Freedom, World Evangelical Fellowship. Book excerpt: In Preaching and Theology in Anglo-Saxon England, Professor Gatch deals with two aspects of the writings of Ælfric and Wulfstan that have been hitherto ignored by scholars of the period. First, he investigates the uses for which the two homilists prepared their sermons, analysing the homiliaries of the Carolingian church and its legislation concerning preaching and teaching, and showing that one should look not to the model of patristic preaching but to the development, in the place of exegetical preaching, of a vernacular catechetical office, the Prone. He also considers the evidence from England in the time of Ælfric and Wulfstan, distinguishing a number of uses which Ælfric intended for his homiletic materials, but questioning whether users of Ælfric's work (Wulfstan perhaps among them) understood or accepted the basic homiletic practices that the abbot had in mind. Second, Gatch investigates the eschatological teaching of the homilists as specimen of the over-all content of their sermons and as indicator of their theological method. By throwing their work into relief against the background of the anonymous Old English homilists, he gives a more accurate picture than exists in textbook stereotypes of the beliefs of Ælfric and Wulfstan, and also of the general theological scene in England at the turn of the tenth and eleventh centuries. The first complete edition of Ælfric's Latin epitome of Julian of Toledo's Prognosticon futuri saeculi, one of the most important of Ælfric's theological sources, is appended to the text. This interdisciplinary study is an important addition to our knowledge of Anglo-Saxon culture and medieval church history, and a major contribution to the study of Old English homilies. For the uninitiated, it is an excellent introduction to Old English preaching; for the initiated, it opens a new field for investigation.

Secondly, millenial views will be examined as they relate to the Kingdom of God, the church, and Israel. Thirdly, the schools of interpretation will be assigned a particular dimension (spiritual, chronological, or ecclesiastical) that will facilitate the merging of the three major viewpoints into a multidimensional model. This will be followed, fourthly with a verse-by-verse commentary of Revelation 20 utilizing the writings of scholars from the three millenial viewpoints. Finally, a descriptive account of the salvation history portrayed in Revelation 20 will emerge in the form of a narrative that utilizes the dynamic multidimensional model of the Millenium.

Book excerpt: "The book is divided into five major parts: (1) Preaching in the Great Tradition; (2) Christianity and the Arts; (3) Reform, Dissent, Heresy; (4) History, Eschatology and the Contemplative Life; (5) Teaching in the Great Tradition. In addition to contributions by his former students, there is an essay by Petry's own mentor own mentor at the University of Chicago, John T. McNeil, and one by the medievalist who was Petry's Methodist Bishop, Bishop Cannon. An added touch of Profesor Petry himself appears in an appendix of a selected number of his religious affirmations. Communicating a sense of the whole of medieval history while presenting selected aspects of the period, this book will attract those with a serious interest in medieval history, especially the dimension of the church during that period." -Publisher

Issues addressed include the understanding of time, the nature of eschatological imagery, the status of apocalyptic and millenarian language, and the political and ecological context of modern eschatology.

Book excerpt: There is no question that Nicolas Berdyaev has distinguished himself in this twentieth century as the Christian philosopher and prophet of freedom and creativity, par excellence. The purpose of this present study is to bring attention to an untreated aspect of Berdyaev's Weltanschauung which underlies the whole of his thinking. This untreated aspect is the eschatological emphasis found in the writings of Nicolas Berdyaev. This study will lead to the conclusion that Berdyaev was not only the philosopher of creativity and freedom par excellence, but he was also an eschatological philosopher of equal excellence. - Introduction.
