Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ, Christianity and the Bible Pilate's wife dreamed a troubled dream of him, and sent word to her husband not to lay hands on him - seeing that he was a just man. Thrice before heaven and earth - in a testimony that still echoes through infinite spaces, and is heard by listening worlds - Pilate himself proclaimed, I find no fault in this man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within The Christian System by Alexander Campbell the author has put forth his views and understanding of the Christian church and the teachings therein. Asking questions such as "What God does" and addressing in detail the topic and practice of Baptism, Campbell establishes clear lines of reasoning along with exhibiting an in depth grasp of his chosen religion and its dogma. The Christian System demonstrates Campbell's clear respect for the religious scriptures of the Christian faith. Though well written and with the points made and substantiation soundly presented, many of his observations on these, the doctrines and structure of the church of his time are not fully correspondent to modern religious views. Regardless of this minor issue, this e-book is an essential and enlightening read for those following any form of the Christian faith and a particularly eye opening volume for those without a prior basis of learning regarding Christianity, containing extensive knowledge on the religion and all that is related. It is my design to bring forward and display all the testimony of God, which can have any relation, either directly or indirectly, to my subject; togeth er with the various and difperent arguments and explanations used concerning the same. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian View of the Old Testament During the past half century the attitude of many men toward the Bible has undergone a decided change. The old confidence seems to be gone; a feeling of uncertainty and of unrest has taken its place. This small volume is intended to set forth the Christian View of the Old Testa ment, and to furnish answers to some of the questions men are asking concerning the Sacred Scriptures of the Hebrews, which the early Chris tians included in the canon of Christian sacred writings. The old foundations are not shaken. The Old Testament has stood the tests of the past, which have been severe and often merciless; and there is to-day stronger ground than ever for believing that in its pages men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story of the Bible It must always be remembered that Christianity did not spring from the New Testament but the New Testament from Christianity. Christianity did not begin as a religion of books but as a religion of spirit. There was neither time nor need to write books when the Lord Jesus was at the very doors. Still less was there need of authoritative books to guide men whose dominant conviction was that they had the Mind of Christ, the very Spirit of God, guiding them constantly from within. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of the New Testament A few weeks ago I listened in a College Chapel to this modern hope, this call to hope to-day though many an earlier hope had been disappointed. To - day, the preacher said, we are learning new reverence, reverence towards God and towards men: And rever ence for creeds we do not share. We shall slight no man for his nonconformity. We are passing beyond form and dogma. We look back - back beyond reformation, beyond councils of the church, beyond the doctors, beyond the great figure of Paul himself, and in the simple Gospel that was preached and under stood in Galilee we shall find a peace where all our warring sects may rest. And surely that might very rightly be. To believe what Jesus Christ taught and to be like him, that is the narrow and blessed way of the Gospel. Who dare add lesser tests to that supreme one? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beliefs About the Bible You will not deem it inappropriate, I trust, if, before I say another word, I stop long enough to give hearty expression to my gladness at meeting you again. Next to the joy of going away when one is tired and worn is the joy of coming back again when one is rested, to resume once more the chosen labor of life. But, as I speak of the joy, I must think also of the shadow that always accompanies joy, the eternal twin of our gladness in our comings back again from being away. I am glad to see your faces, but I am sad to think that there are faces I shall not see. There are some that I have learned to prize and trust that I shall not see again, - I will not say forever, for I do not believe it is true: but I shall not see them again until I also pass over the border-land and into the darkness that encircles this little lighted spot that we call the stage of our human life. I rejoice with some of you over the recovery of those who have been close down to the border while you have stood, with dim eyes and tremulous lips, wondering whether they were to cross or to return. I rejoice with you that they have come back again into the light of life. This morning, - you may not have noted it, the years go by so swiftly, - I stand upon the threshold of the ninth year of my service with you as your minister. I might go back and fill an hour with retrospect, explaining and trying to apologize for errors, shortcomings, and failures. I might go back, with some show of reason, and recount our triumphs, our victories, and our achievements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men of the Bible A great many people are afraid of the will of God, and yet I believe that one of the sweetest lessons that we can learn in the school of Christ is the surrender of our wills to God, letting Him plan for us and rule our lives. If I know my own mind, if an angel should come from the throne of God and tell me that I could have my will done the rest of my days on earth, and that everything I wished should be carried out, or that I might refer it back to God, and let God's will be done in me and through me, I think in an instant I would say. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Know the Bible It is plain, at the first glance, that the Bible is in two parts, the Old Testament and the New. Every body knows that the Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew, and that it contains the sacred scriptures of the Jewish religion; and that the New Testament, which contains the sacred scriptures of the Christian religion, was originally written in Greek. The two are bound together for Christian use because the first Christians came out of Judaism, and brought their books with them. Each of these parts is a collee tion of books. The Old Testament begins with the five writings called the Pentateuch: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, N umbers, Deuteronomy. They give an account of the early ancestors of the Hebrew people, moving out of the valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates into the land between the Jordan and the Mediterranean, then down into Egypt where they lived long in slavery, then escaping, wandering in the wilderness, gradually shap ing their political and religious institutions. They con tain the codes of laws in which the details of these institutions were recorded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Salvation From Sin, the End of Christian Faith In denying that the Old Testament saints were born of God, we must not be understood as denying that they had any religion. It appears by the passage above quoted, that there are two dis tinct stages in religious experience, in the first of which men may properly be called servants of God, while yet they are not sons. It is important that this distinction should be clearly seen, and constantly kept in view. We admit, and teach, that the Old Testament saints were servants of God in the ages before Christ, and that they became sons at his coming. But what is the difference between servants and sons? Did not the Old Testament saints love God Yes and so many servants love and honor their masters, while yet there is no vital union, no blood-relationship between them. So there was no vital union between God and man, till Christ came in the flesh. Abraham was called the friend of God, and he doubtless loved God as a man loves his friend but it is not said in scripture, and it is not true, that Christ was in him that he dwelt in God, and God in him. This spiritual indwelling was hid from ages and from generations, and was manifested only after the mission of Christ. Col. 1 26, 27. It is this that brings men into blood-relationship to God, so that they are entitled to the name of sons of God.
