Book excerpt: Pour répondre à la demande esthétique des personnes édentées, de nombreux auteurs ont tenté d'établir des règles esthétiques pour guider les praticiens dans le choix des dents prothétiques. Ces travaux et études anthropométriques essaient de déterminer une corrélation entre des indices faciaux et la forme, les dimensions, la position et la couleur des dents maxillaires antérieures. Des auteurs estiment que certains rapports faciaux seraient constants chez tous les individus. Parmi ces travaux, on retouve le concept de la dentogénique de Frush et Fisher avec la triade âge, sexe, personnalité. L'objectif de cette thèse est de vérifier la fiabilité de ces critères esthètiques grâce à une étude réalisée sur 198 étudiants en odontologie. Le but étant de comparer les dents du groupe test avec celles issues des bases de données du FormSelector. Les données relevées ont été soumises à un test kappa. Les résultats montrent que les critères ici étudiés donnent un accord allant de très mauvais à médiocre. Les critères d'esthétique de prothèse complète correspondent peu à la réalité d'après l'étude menée. La multitude de forme et la complexité de la couleur des dents chez un individu sont telles que, sans documents préextractionnels très précis (moulage, photographies...), il est quasiment impossible de recréer l'état dentaire d'origine d'un patient édenté. En conclusion, les règles d'esthétique ne sont pas là pour être appliquées de manière obtue, elles permettent d'optimiser notre sens artistique et d'éviter des erreurs grossières.
