Book excerpt: This is the sequel to the first volume to treat in one effective field theory framework the physics of strongly interacting matter under extreme conditions. This is vital for understanding the high temperature phenomena taking place in relativistic heavy ion collisions and in the early Universe, as well as the high-density matter predicted to be present in compact stars. The underlying thesis is that what governs hadronic properties in a heat bath and/or a dense medium is hidden local symmetry which emerges from chiral dynamics of light quark systems and from the duality between QCD in 4D and bulk gravity in 5D as in AdS/QCD. Special attention is paid to hot matter relevant for relativistic heavy ion processes and to dense matter relevant for compact stars that are either stable or on the verge of collapse into black holes.

Book excerpt: The physics of strongly interacting many-body systems known as nuclear physics is a mature discipline which has achieved a remarkably quantitative success. It has explained with an impressive accuracy the properties of nuclei from the deuteron to heavy nuclei containing several hundreds of nucleons. This is the more remarkable when one realizes that in no way did the success depend on the existence of, or knowledge derived from, the fundamental theory of strong interactions now believed to be quantum chromodynamics (QCD).This monograph is a first, albeit embryonic, attempt to explain how a nucleus can be understood without invoking the explicit degrees of freedom of quarks and gluons while still staying within the basic premise of QCD and furthermore why do quark-gluon signatures not show up prominently in nuclear processes, including those processes involving short-distance encounters within nuclei. Such an understanding is largely based on the modern concepts of broken chiral symmetry and is believed to be essential in uncovering new physics expected to figure in the hadronic environment under extreme conditions of high temperature and/or high density.

This volume is devoted to exploring the intricate structure of compact-star matter inaccessible directly from QCD. It is principally anchored on hidden symmetries and topology presumed to be encoded in QCD. It differs from standard effective field theory and energy density functional approaches in that it exploits renormalization-group flow in the complex 'vacuum' sliding with density inferred from topology change identified as a manifestation of baryon-quark continuity in dense matter. It makes a variety of predictions that drastically differ from the conventional treatments that could be tested by upcoming terrestrial and astrophysical experiments. This monograph recounts how to go, in one unique field theoretic formalism in terms of hadronic degrees of freedom, from finite nuclei to dense compact-star matter that could be explored in RIB-type machines in nuclear physics as well as in LIGO-type gravity waves in astrophysics.

Book excerpt: The 12th Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics carried on the tradition, started in 1978, of bringing together scientists working in all regimes of nuclear dynamics. This broad range of related topics allows the researcher attending the Workshop to be exposed to work that normally would be considered outside his/her field, but could po tentially add a new dimension to the understanding of his/her work. At Snowbird, we brought together experimentalists working with heavy ion beams from 10 MeV/nucleon up to 200 GeV /nucleon and theoretical physicists working in diverse areas ranging from antisymmetrized fermionic dynamics to perturbative quantum chromo dynamics. Fu ture work at RHIC was discussed also, with presentations from several of the experimen tal groups. In addition, several talks addressed issues of cross-disciplinary relevance, from the study of water-drop-collisions, to the multi-fragmentation of buckyballs. Clearly the field of nuclear dynamics has a bright future. The understanding of the nuclear equation of state in all of its manifestations is being expanded on all fronts both theoretically and experimentally. Future Workshops on Nuclear Dynamics will certainly have much progress to report. Gary D. These workshops are dedicated to the concept that bringing together scientists from diverse areas of nuclear reactions promotes the vibrant exchange of ideas. This workshop hosted presentations from experimentalists and theorists, intermediate energy to ultrarelativistic energies, and final results to recent speculations. Many of these scientists would not normally be exposed to the work done in other subfields. Thus the Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics plays a unique role in information exchange and the stimulation of new ides. The field of nuclear dynamics has a bright future. New accelerators are being planned and completed around the world. New detectors are being constructed. New models and theories are being developed to describe these phenomena. The Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics will continue to promote this lively and compelling field of research. WOLFGANG BAUER AND GARY D. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume collected papers presented at a recent symposium on Chiral Symmetry in Hadrons and Nuclei — the seventh in a series of international symposia — with an aim of providing a platform for discussions among the experts and an overview of the present status in the hadron and nuclear physics related to the chiral symmetry. The recent past years have seen a remarkable progress towards a unified description of nonperturbative strong interaction phenomena based on the fundamental theory of the strong interaction, Quantum ChromoDynamics, and Effective Field Theories. The topics discussed in these proceedings include: chiral and heavy-quark spin symmetry; chiral dynamics of few-body hadron systems; chiral symmetry and hadrons in a nuclear medium; chiral dynamics in nucleon–nucleon interaction and atomic nuclei; chiral symmetry in rotating nuclei; hadron structure and interactions; exotic hadrons, heavy flavor hadrons and nuclei; mesonic atoms and nuclei. Book excerpt: Each summer, the Theoretical Physics Division of the Canadian Association of Physicists organizes a summer institute of two weeks duration on a current topic in theoretical physics. This volume contains the lectures from the Pacific Summer Institute held at Pearson College on Vancouver Island, B. C. (Canada) from August 23 to September 3, 1982. The Institute was titled "Progress in Nuclear Dynamics: Short-Distance Behavior in the Nucleus". The primary source of funds for the Institute came from NATO through its Advanced Study Institute programme. Significant finan cial support is also gratefully acknowledged from TRIUMF, Simon Fraser University, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. The topic of the school was the role of the substructure of hadrons--quarks and gluons--in nuclear physics. This includes not only the effects which may be observed in specific nuclear states, such as form factors at large momentum transfer, or the presence of hidden color components in the ground states of few nucleon systems, but also effects which may be observed in the nuclear matter contin uum: the phase transition from normal nuclear matter to a plasma of quarks and gluons. The current status of the long distance phenom enology of the nucleus--the interacting boson approximation and the role of n's and ~'s in nuclear structure, is also reviewed.

This helps particularly in the testing of the standard model. The workshop reported here was focused on theoretical predictions and the measurements of physical processes, analyzing carefully the phenomenology needed to bridge the gap between the two. Besides the lectures, this volume also contains summaries of the working groups on Â-Â-scattering, ÂN-interaction, photo/electro-pion-production, and on chiral anomaly. This book is a thorough review of the state of the art and it addresses researchers as well as graduate students.

Book excerpt: The 1988 Summer School on New Aspects of Nuclear Dynamics took place in the style that by now has become a tradition: a series of lectures by well known scientists on modem topics of nuclear physics, where special emphasis is placed on the didactic aspects of the lectures. In the past few years, we have witnessed a rapid evolution of the field of nuclear physics towards novel directions of research. This development is accompanied by the construction of some of the largest experimental facilities ever built for nuclear research. The subjects covered by the Summer School focussed on two main issues currently under active investigation and which will be pursued with the new facilities: the transition from nucleonic to quark degrees of freedom in the decription of nuclear reactions, and the behavior of nuclear matter as one approaches extreme densities and temperatures. These topics in many respects go beyond traditional nuclear physics and the speakers therefore also included high energy physicists. From the response of the participants it was clear that the program of the school filled a gap in the curriculum of many students. We wish to thank all the speakers for their well organized lectures, which were nicely geared to the level of the school, and for spending extra time on problem sessions and extensive discussions. The organization of this Summer School was made possible by substantial support from the Science Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
