Book excerpt: Designing machines that can read handwriting like human beings has been an ambitious goal for more than half a century, driving talented researchers to explore diverse approaches. Obstacles have often been encountered that at first appeared insurmountable but were indeed overcome before long. Yet some open issues remain to be solved. As an indispensable branch, Chinese handwriting recognition has been termed as one of the most difficult Pattern Recognition tasks. Chinese handwriting recognition poses its own unique challenges, such as huge variations in strokes, diversity of writing styles, and a large set of confusable categories. With ever-increasing training data, researchers have pursued elaborate algorithms to discern characters from different categories and compensate for the sample variations within the same category. As a result, Chinese handwriting recognition has evolved substantially and amazing achievements can be seen. This book introduces integral algorithms used in Chinese handwriting recognition and the applications of Chinese handwriting recogniers. The first part of the book covers both widespread canonical algorithms to a reliable recognizer and newly developed scalable methods in Chinese handwriting recognition. The recognition of Chinese handwritten text is presented systematically, including instructive guidelines for collecting samples, novel recognition paradigms, distributed discriminative learning of appearance models and distributed estimation of contextual models for large categories, in addition to celebrated methods, e.g. Gradient features, MQDF and HMMs. In the second part of this book, endeavors are made to create a friendlier human-machine interface through application of Chinese handwriting recognition. Four scenarios are exemplified: grid-assisted input, shortest moving input, handwritten micro-blog, and instant handwriting messenger. All the while, the book moves from basic to more complex approaches, also providing a list for further reading with literature comments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a collection of invited chapters by experts in Chinese document and text processing, and is part of a series on Language Processing, Pattern Recognition, and Intelligent Systems. The chapters introduce the latest advances and state-of-the-art methods for Chinese document image analysis and recognition, font design, text analysis and speaker recognition. Handwritten Chinese character recognition and text line recognition are at the core of document image analysis (DIA), and therefore, are addressed in four chapters for different scripts (online characters, offline characters, ancient characters, and text lines). Two chapters on character recognition pay much attention to deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs), which are widely used and performing superiorly in various pattern recognition problems. A chapter is contributed to describe a large handwriting database consisting both online and offline characters and text pages. Postal mail reading and writer identification, addressed in two chapters, are important applications of DIA. The collection can serve as reference for students and engineers in Chinese document and text processing and their applications.

Book excerpt: Anybody who reads or writes Chinese characters knows that they obey a grammar of sorts: though numerous, they are built out of a much smaller set of constituents, often interpretable in meaning or pronunciation, that are themselves built out of an even smaller set of strokes. This book goes far beyond these basic facts to show that Chinese characters truly have a productive and psychologically real lexical grammar of the same sort seen in spoken and signed languages, with non-trivial analogs of morphology (the combination of potentially interpretable constituents), phonology (formal regularities without implications for interpretation), and phonetics (articulatory and perceptual constraints). Evidence comes from a wide variety of sources, from quantitative corpus analyses to experiments on character reading, writing, and learning. The grammatical approach helps capture how character constituents combine as they do, how strokes systematically vary in different environments, how character form evolved from ancient times to the modern simplified system, and how readers and writers are able to process or learn even entirely novel characters. This book not only provides tools for exploring the full richness of Chinese orthography, but also offers new ways of thinking about the most fundamental question in linguistic theory: what is grammar?

Book excerpt: (Uncorrected OCR) 1 Abstract of Thesis Entitled 'Fuzzy Set Theoretic Approach to Handwritten Chinese Character Recognition' Submitted by Chan Kwok Ping For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in June 1989 Fuzzy set theory was incorporated into two main approaches of pattern recognition |the decision-theoretic approach and the structural approach. Algorithms were derived and applied on the recognition of handwritten Chinese characters. Since the number of characters in Chinese language is very large and the variation in handwriting is rather significant, the accurate estimation of probability distribution is very difficult to achieve. Modified Fuzzy ISODATA (MFI) was proposed as an alternative to deal with such situation. By using weighted update of parameters and restricting the volume of hyperel-lipsoid of constant Mahalanobis distance and let only the shape to vary, we get an improvement of 2.8-3.7% over the Bayes classifier, assuming multivariate normal distribution and using maximum likelihood estimation. Careful study showed that the latter restriction gave the main contribution to the improvement. Owing to the large character set of Chinese language, cluster analysis must be introduced to segment the character set. Recursive Fuzzy-2-mean (RF2M) algorithm was introduced which perform clustering on classes rather than on data samples as in conventional cluster analysis algorithm. We can save about 150 distance calculations and require the final recognition to consider 5 more possible candidates. The decision-theoretic approach was used as pre-classification only. Final recognition was achieved using structural approach. Conventional fuzzy structural approach was concentrated on fuzzifying the structure, e.g. fuzzy grammar and fuzzy graph. However, what we need 11 was a scheme for handling fuzzy data. Fuzzy-Attribute Graph (FAG) was developed to fill this gap. We defined FAG and FAG monomorphism. Properties of FAG were also derived.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "Hand-written Chinese Character Recognition by First and Second Order Hidden Markov Models and Radical Modeling" Submitted by Wong Ho Ting for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in December 2003 Numerous handwritten Chinese character recognition systems are available on the market at present. Most of them are not robust enough, and handwritten Chinese character recognition remains a common research topic in pattern recognition. This research project exploits the fact that most Chinese characters can be broken down into simpler units (radicals). We hypothesize that using information from radicals will improve the recognition rate, and propose a recognition system deploying radical modeling. We also show that the recognition rate can be improved by using second order Hidden Markov Model (HMM) classifiers instead of first order HMM. A method for improving the rate of recognition of Chinese characters by modeling radicals instead of the whole character is presented. Because a radical is necessarily more primitive than the character in which it occurs, the complexity of the character models can be significantly reduced. The application of this concept requires an effective radical extraction scheme, and a modified version of Han's radical extraction method is presented. However, because we believe that the concept of radical modeling should be used only when it is needed, we introduce a criterion into the recognition system that determines when to apply the concept. We also compare the performance of second order HMM classifiers against first order HMM classifiers, due to their greater descriptive power. Experiments were conducted on the ETL8B2 character set, and a 0.43% improvement was obtained by introducing the concept of radical modeling in a recognition system with a first order HMM fine-classifier and a Bayes pre-classifier. This is an encouraging result because this 0.43% represented about one third of all characters which were wrongly recognized by the recognition system without radical modeling. If a comparison is made only with a first order HMM classifier, a 0.52% improvement can be observed. On the other hand, although second order HMM did not show a constant improvement from the experiment results, the improvement in the case of codebook size equal to 64 suggests that constant improvement may be observed by having enough training samples or performing a KL transform in the training phase. In conclusion, we have proposed a method for improving the recognition rate of handwritten Chinese characters by using the concept of radical modeling. We applied this concept to certain appropriate character samples, using a modified version of Han's radical extraction method in the recognition system. We also compared the performance of a second order HMM classifier with a typical first order HMM classifier. Encouraging results were observed, and the results indicate that a combination of radical modeling and use of second order HMM could help to improve the rate of recognition of handwritten Chinese characters.
