Book Synopsis The Traditional Chinese Iron Industry and Its Modern Fate by : Donald B. Wagner
Download or read book The Traditional Chinese Iron Industry and Its Modern Fate written by Donald B. Wagner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the economic history of the traditional Chinese iron industry in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with particular emphasis on the interactions among technological, economic and geographic factors. The traditional technology of iron production is described together with the ways in which it changed and developed in response to upheavals wrought by foreign competition, war and revolution and by the growth in China of a modern iron industry. Many of the book's findings are counter-intuitive, and will provide food for thought in the study of Third World industrial development. The author has written widely on the history of science and technology in China, and is currently engaged in writing the volume on ferrous metallurgy for Joseph Needham's Science and Civilisation in China.

Focusing on the general requirements for high-quality development, it reviews the evolution of the global and Chinese steel industries with regard to reduction, innovation, and transformation. It also summarizes industrial development law from a transfer route perspective, analyzes major challenges and opportunities for the steel industry in the new era, and proposes strategic orientation and implementation measures for the future development of the steel industry. The book contends that high-quality development of the steel industry must be driven by innovation, and it is essential to promote integrated development based on several aspects – greenness, coordination, quality, standardization, differentiation, service, intelligence, diversification, and internationalization – in order to reshape the industrial value chain and continuously improve industrial competitiveness. This concept is essential to help Chinese steel companies prepare development plans for transformation and upgrading. Combining thorough analysis, unique insights, and many practical cases, the book offers a guide to and inspiration for future implementation approaches.

Book Synopsis The Steel Industry of China by : William Thomas Hogan
Download or read book The Steel Industry of China written by William Thomas Hogan and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China currently produces more crude steel than any other country in the world. This book, by an internationally acknowledged expert on the world steel industry, covers all aspects of the steel industry in China. It begins with an outline of the existing steel plants and smaller mills and describes four major mergers in the industry, which indicate a trend toward the consolidation of smaller plants into larger integrated units. Hogan analyzes the major steel markets--including the automotive industry, shipbuilding, appliances, railroads, construction, containers, and oil and gas--in terms of their recent growth, and examines China's raw-materials output. He presents new technologies being developed and used, and discusses the future of the Chinese steel industry. Hogan successfully argues, using historical and current data (much of it difficult to obtain), that one of the centers of recent Chinese industrial strength is its steel industry, which should be watched carefully. Steel industry analysts and scholars of global industry and economics will find this book invaluable.

Book excerpt: This unique book intends to provide a focused analysis of the main Chinese industrial sectors through case studies, data analysis and review of new state-initiated policies. In response to the global economic crisis in the short run and to cope with the existing structural problems of production in the long run, the Chinese central government has successively released new development outlines for 10 key industries since 2008. In this book, the authors will use key sectors including automobile, steel, shipbuilding, high-speed railway and new energy, to analyze the development of China's industries, along with their challenges and future prospects. The effectiveness of state-oriented policies in rejuvenating these industries will be evaluated. After discussing the background and motivations for the new government-initiated policies, through detailed analysis of these policies, the authors will assess the contribution they have made to industrial development. The authors will also identify and analyze existing and potential challenges to sustainable development of China's industries. How did the industries respond to climate change and the development of a low-carbon economy in China? What measures have been taken by these industries to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emission and reduce overall energy consumption? What are the latest developments in China's industrial sector in terms of technological progress and upgrading? What are the potential challenges facing the industrial sector in the post-economic crisis era? This study intends to address these issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Industrial Economics, grade: 1,0, The FOM University of Applied Sciences, Hamburg, language: English, abstract: What are the consequences of steel tariffs on the Chinese steel industry and its development? Coping with this question a deeper look at the Chinese steel industry is needed. First, this paper will outline the history and examine statistics dealing with the global steel market in order to center the growth and structure of the Chinese steel industry. The second part of this paper highlights tariffs, their function and influence on the market in general and especially on the Chinese steel industry. Finally, derived from previously examined facts, the tariffs’ consequences on the industry are discussed concluding with a future outlook. Since 2014, China is the second largest economy in the world, following the United States of America, comparing the countries’ gross domestic products. China’s steel industry dominates the global steel market, taking nearly half of the world’s production into account. In 2015, the country is the biggest exporter of semi-finished and finished steel products. Latest developments show a lowering and stagnating overall growth in China. This forces higher steel exports and puts pressure on the global steel price, leading to clamours for taxing Chinese steel imports in other countries. The U.S. and European Union (EU) among other countries have already confined tariffs on Chinese steel, aiming to protect their local steel industry.

Book Synopsis China's Iron Ore Boom by : Luke W. L. Hurst
Download or read book China's Iron Ore Boom written by Luke W. L. Hurst and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s emergence as the world’s second largest economy has been driven by more than four decades of explosive growth. To support this expansion, China has required massive expansion in its steel production capacity, which is highly correlated to its demand for iron ore imports. The scale and pace of China’s iron ore demand shock has pushed the global iron ore market into a historical adjustment. Using economic frameworks, this book brings to bare new data and field observations throughout Asia and Africa to investigate how the rapid growth in China’s iron ore demand has affected the organisation and structure of the global iron ore market. The research provides several important contributions to the extant literature including analysis of whether the Big Three Asian market iron ore exporters coordinated to sustain the profits arising from the price boom; estimating the financial impact of the Chinese state’s intervention in iron price negotiations; and addressing the concerns arising from the Chinese state’s provision of cheap financial support for its companies’ iron ore procurement. Offering unique insights into China’s economic rise and the structure of the iron ore market, this book will be relevant to students and scholars of resource economics, and the Australian and Chinese economies.
