Book excerpt: In Hypermasculinity And State Violence In Zimbabwe, Assata Zerai explores the demography of maternal and child health in Southern Africa from an Africana feminist sociological perspective. She presents a framework that considers the ways that nation, race, class, gender, sexuality, globalisation and other dimensions of oppression intersect to impact upon the experiences and agency of individuals and groups with health care and social support in Zimbabwe. Zerai argues that maternal and child health cannot be understood unless political/culutral contexts are considered.

Book Synopsis African Women and Children by : Apollo Rwomire
Download or read book African Women and Children written by Apollo Rwomire and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2001 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although research on the roles and status of women and children in Africa has expanded over the past two decades, there is still a lack of comprehensive, reality-based and sophisticated analyses and documentation of the important issues and debates in this area. This collection of original and thought-provoking essays remedies these shortcomings by providing an eclectic, informed, and contextualized account of the nature and consequences of the oppression and abuse of women and children in Africa. In addition, it provides a critical review of a broad range of policies and interventions that are being pursued by statutory and non-governmental organizations to improve the quality of life of these two groups. Based on survey data, case studies, literature reviews, and firsthand accounts, this collection brings together some of the most significant new contributions to our understanding of how and why African women and children are oppressed by society. The contributors to this volume consist of a well-known team of scholars from the social sciences and humanities who are mostly citizens of several sub-Saharan countries. Together, their lively contributions cover a wide range of topics including a comparative critique of females and gender status, traditional institutions and violation of women's human rights, and unequal access to power. In addition, the contributors examine constraints upon women's participation in politics, the feminization of poverty, prostitution, patriarchy and marriage, the inadequacy of gender neutral policies in housing delivery systems, the impact of parental separation and divorce on children, child abuse, and child streetism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an instrument which addresses the circumstances which affect women's lives and enjoyment of rights in a diverse world, the CEDAW is slowly but surely making its mark on the development of international and national law. Using national case studies from South Asia, Southern Africa, Australia, Canada and Northern Europe, Women's Human Rights examines the potential and actual added value of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women in comparison and interaction with other equality and anti-discrimination mechanisms. The studies demonstrate how state and non-state actors have invoked, adopted or resisted the CEDAW and related instruments in different legal, political, economic and socio-cultural contexts, and how the various international, regional and national regimes have drawn inspiration and learned from each other.

Book Synopsis Underdevelopment, Women's Work, and Fertility in Zimbabwe by : Robert Edward Mazur
Download or read book Underdevelopment, Women's Work, and Fertility in Zimbabwe written by Robert Edward Mazur and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of underdevelopment is examined for its role in shaping the current structure of women's work in Zimbabwe. Explicit colonial policies that alienated land, created a system of migrant labor, and discriminated against women in formal sector employment have an enduring legacy. The diversity of women's roles in the peasant farming, commercial farming, urban informal and formal sectors are examined. The limited available evidence concerning fertility in relation to proximate determinants and women's socio-economic status is analyzed. While women are still predominantly engaged in the informal sector, age at marriage, women's education, working for remuneration, and partner's education are associated with lower fertility. Despite a precarious economic situation, the social, legal, and economic needs of women are beginning to be addressed through popular initiatives and government programs.

Book Synopsis Shona Women in Zimbabwe—A Purchased People? by : John Chitakure
Download or read book Shona Women in Zimbabwe—A Purchased People? written by John Chitakure and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The position and treatment of women in every religion, culture, and society have been subjects of concern for a long time. In every society, women fight for their emancipation from exploitive and oppressive patriarchal structures. The most contentious issues include domestic violence, gender discrimination and inequality in the areas of employment, leadership, and marriage. Domestic violence tops the list and is the worst enemy of any progressive and democratic society. It dehumanizes, disfigures, and demeans its victims and survivors. Shona Women in Zimbabwe--a Purchased People? explores the causes of domestic violence--the cultural practice of bridewealth, in particular--and assesses the extent to which it contributes to the proliferation of domestic violence among the Shona people of Zimbabwe. It then explores the Christian traditions, particularly, the Roman Catholic Church, in search of resources that can be used to emancipate Shona women from patriarchal subjugation. Finally, the book offers a pastoral response that is informed by the experiences of the Shona women, their cultural resources, and the Roman Catholic religious tradition.
