Book excerpt: Frank and funny, these stories written originally for the Bengali children's magazine Sandesh, are an essential read for all Ray enthusiasts as well as those who want to know Ray, the writer and film-maker, better. In this volume, Ray also shares some of his experiences while shooting Pather Panchali—his epic debut, and subsequent films, particularly for children. He describes how an entire field of kaash flowers was eaten up by cows before he could shoot his famous scene with the train in Pather Panchali; and how a circus tiger let loose in a bamboo grove chased away a group of curious onlookers in the blink of an eye.

Book excerpt: If you feel nostalgic about your childhood and badly miss those days of colors, fairy tales, absurd dreams, meaningless gossips, unruly games and countless moments of naughtiness; then rekindle your mind, rejuvenate your feelings and resurrect the sedated child within you by reading 'Childhood Days'. This is a collection of short stories narrated in simple words with few touches of soft reflections. Although narrated in first person yet the narrator is a fictitious character who is sharing the experiences almost like an Eternal Child who wants to play adventurous games with his naughty friends in the lap of nature and wants to enjoy every moment of his childhood yet he has to encounter some of the hard realities of society. In a digitized world where life has become mechanized and the childhood is becoming less colorful day by day this book will definitely touch those hearts that still have the cravings for simple and silly fun.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bangkok in the 1950s and early 1960s was a relatively small city consisting of exotic temples and palaces built in bygone days surrounded by rows of commercial and residential shophouses. Author Kim Pao Yu, a child born into a traditional Northern Chinese family, writes about his parents, their origins in Shandong, and how they escaped the war and communism in China to settle in Bangkok. In Where Chingchoks Chirp, a collection of essays, he shares his parents’ beliefs and values, their hopes and joys, and their struggles to ensure a better life for their children. Raised in a shophouse where his parents owned an antique and furniture store, situated in a compound inhabited by immigrant Chinese from Swatow, Kim describes everyday activities—the myriad vendors who sold their goods and services, the neighborhood children and the games they played, and how they celebrated holidays and festivals. The selections also cover the food and recipes his mother left as a legacy; his memories of people and experiences encountered while growing up; and his adventures at an American school as a local Chinese boy attending with the children of American expatriate and military families that shaped his thinking as he left Bangkok for higher learning in the United States. Where Chingchoks Chirp shares the sights, sounds, and smells of the bygone days of Bangkok, now a modern, bustling city that still retains much of its past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My Childhood's Days in Slavery" is an autobiographical account of Annie L. Burton, African-American memoirist from Alabama. Burton was born into slavery on a plantation near Clayton, and was liberated in childhood by the Union Army. Her father was a white man from Liverpool, England, who owned a nearby plantation and died in Alabama, in 1875. Moving North in 1879, she was among the earliest Black emigrants there from the South during the post-Civil War era, supporting herself in Boston and New York by working as a laundress and as a cook. In her autobiography, published in 1909, Burton relates that the end of slavery not only signaled a time for African Americans to start a new life, but also a time to redefine their lives.

He's a dreamer, schemer, schoolyard scrapper, secret lover of books, and classroom clown ... a kid you can't decide whether to hug or to slap. Meanwhile, the conformity of the 1950s is yielding to those turbulent '60s. Yes, the times they definitely were a changin' with Kings Cross in the eye of the societal storm.

Book excerpt: From bestselling writer David Kamp, the engrossing, behind-the-scenes story of the cultural heroes who created the beloved children’s TV programs Sesame Street, The Electric Company, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Free to Be...You and Me, and Schoolhouse Rock!—which collectively transformed American childhood for the better, teaching kids about diversity, the ABCs, and feminism through a fun, funky 1970s lens. With a foreword by Questlove In 1970, on a soundstage on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, a group of men, women, and Muppets of various ages and colors worked doggedly to finish the first season of a children’s TV program that was not yet assured a second season: Sesame Street. They were conducting an experiment to see if television could be used to better prepare disadvantaged preschoolers for kindergarten. What they didn’t know then was that they were starting a cultural revolution that would affect all American kids. In Sunny Days, bestselling author David Kamp captures the unique political and social moment that gave us not only Sesame Street, but also Fred Rogers’s gentle yet brave Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood; Marlo Thomas’s unabashed gender-politics primer Free to Be...You and Me; Schoolhouse Rock!, an infectious series of educational shorts dreamed up by Madison Avenue admen; and more, including The Electric Company, ZOOM, and Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids. It was a unique time when an uncommon number of media professionals and thought leaders leveraged their influence to help children learn—and, just as notably, a time of unprecedented buy-in from American parents. Kamp conducted rigorous research and interviewed such Sesame Street figures as Joan Ganz Cooney, Lloyd Morrisett, Sonia Manzano, Emilio Delgado, Loretta Long, Bob McGrath, and Frank Oz, along with Free to Be’s Marlo Thomas and The Electric Company’s Rita Moreno—and in Sunny Days, he explains how these and other like-minded individuals found their way into children’s television not for fame or money, but to make a difference. Fun, fascinating, and a masterful work of cultural history, Sunny Days captures a wondrous period in the US when a determined few proved that, with persistence and effort, they could change the lives of millions. It’s both a rollicking ride through a turbulent time and a joyful testament to what Americans are capable of at their best.
