Book excerpt: In a jungle village high up on Ghost Mountain, the people were happy and lived well, their leader was Chief Amado. The chief told stories and had words of wisdom. All of the people in his village loved his stories which left everybody around him hypnotized. For years nothing exciting happened in the village. Then one day a man wandered into their village, saying he'd gotten lost in the jungle and asked for something to eat. After he had eaten, he told the people of Ghost Mountain how he felt about them, He told them that people in neighboring villages were starving and had nothing. The man’s words and attitude were aggressive and violent, but Chief Amado said he would go to the nearest village to see what was going on. Chief Amado left his village the next morning, and didn’t return for years. When he returned to his village he was a changed man, and spent weeks in his hut alone. When he left his hut, he tells them about the wicket behavior of the people in villages all over Africa. He told then people were doing all kinds of nasty things. The Voodoo Queen has no friends. She roams the forest around her hut at night. She is lonely and wishes to see the sun, but a deadly affliction prevents her from the exposure of light. Even though her power, the Voodoo Queen live with ghostly creatures. She wishes to see the sun rise, but that’s impossible. Her only comfort is her deck of Tarot cards, which reveals her fate, knowledge, and death." She tries to understand her future, but she didn’t like the answer. The Voodoo Queens leaves her hut which is like a castle in the jungle every night to eat. When she was young she ate only small animals. Now she is a woman, she must have men." A ghostly woman brings her men to eat. After she has finished eating and drinking their blood, she is disgusted by what she has done. She buries her victim's remains in her jungle. During the day, the blood sucking woman sleeps in her coffin, with her clothing stained with blood.

Book excerpt: The Kuna of Panama, today one of the best known indigenous peoples of Latin America, moved over the course of the twentieth century from orality and isolation towards literacy and an active engagement with the nation and the world. Recognizing the fascination their culture has held for many outsiders, Kuna intellectuals and villagers have collaborated actively with foreign anthropologists to counter anti-Indian prejudice with positive accounts of their people, thus becoming the agents as well as subjects of ethnography. One team of chiefs and secretaries, in particular, independently produced a series of historical and cultural texts, later published in Sweden, that today still constitute the foundation of Kuna ethnography. As a study of the political uses of literacy, of western representation and indigenous counter-representation, and of the ambivalent inter-cultural dialogue at the heart of ethnography, Chiefs, Scribes, and Ethnographers addresses key issues in contemporary anthropology. It is the story of an extended ethnographic encounter, one involving hundreds of active participants on both sides and continuing today.

Book excerpt: An up-to-date examination of Mexico's version of the "War on Drugs" that exposes the evolution of major cartels and their corruption of politicians, law-enforcement agencies, and the Army. What can President Enrique Peña Nieto do to curb the narcotics-induced mayhem in Mexico, and what would be the consequences to the United States if he fails? This book analyzes Mexico's transition from a relatively peaceful kleptocracy controlled by the Tammany-Hall style Institutional Revolutionary Party/PRI (1929–2000) to a country plagued by rural and urban enclaves of grotesque violence. The author examines the major drug cartels and their success in infiltrating American and Mexican businesses; details the response from the Obama administration; assesses the threat that the continuing bloodshed represents for the United States; and emphasizes the constraints on America's ability to solve Mexico's crisis, despite U.S. contributions of intelligence, military equipment, training, and diplomatic support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2006, more than 85,000 people have disappeared in Mexico. These disappearances remain largely unsolved: disappeared people are rarely found, and the Mexican state almost never investigates or prosecutes those responsible. Despite this, people not only continue to report disappearances, but many devote their lives to answering the question, "where are they?" Given the risks and institutional barriers, why and how do people mobilize for justice in states with rampant impunity and weak rule of law? In Bootstrap Justice, Janice Gallagher leverages over a decade of ethnographic research to explain what enables the sustained mobilization of family members of the disappeared and analyze how configurations of political power between state and criminal actors shape what is possible for them to achieve. She follows three families from before the disappearance of their loved ones through their transformations into sophisticated and strategic victim advocates and activists. Gallagher supplements these individual narratives with an analysis of the evolving political opportunities for mobilization within Mexico. By centering the perspectives of people whose lives have been upended by the disappearance of their loved ones, Bootstrap Justice offers a unique window into how citizens respond to weak and corrupt institutions. Gallagher focuses on the overlooked role of informal relationships and dynamics in shaping substantive legal and human rights outcomes and highlights how pioneering independent and creative work-arounds can compensate for state inaction. While top-down efforts, such as judicial reforms, technical assistance, and changes in political leadership are important parts of addressing impunity, policymakers and scholars alike have much to learn from the bottom-up--and by following the path that citizens themselves have worn within the labyrinth of state judicial bureaucracies.

Ellison's heart-racing Sam Owens series… As a medical examiner, Samantha Owens knows her job is to make sense of death. On the other end of the line is an old boyfriend's mother, asking Sam to do a second autopsy on her son. Eddie Donovan is officially the victim of a vicious carjacking, but under Sam's sharp eye the forensics tell a darker story. The ex-Ranger was murdered, though not for his car. Forced to confront the burning memories and feelings about yet another loved one killed brutally, Sam loses herself in the mystery contained within Donovan's old notes. Book excerpt: Jorge Amado is simultaneously one of Brazil's most prolific and widely read novelists and one of its most controversial. Seeking to offer for his English-speaking audience the same range of critical thinking that surrounds his work in Brazil, this volume provides an introduction and chronology to Amado's life, followed by a comprehensive survey of his major works by some of the world's leading Latin American Studies scholars. As the case of Jorge Amado is central to the emergence of Brazilian literature in the twentieth century, this volume of original essays will place him in clearer critical perspective for English language readers.

How as a family have we lived and how have we interacted with people around us? The contents of this book will very likely be of immense value to two or more generations down the line, specifically the grandchildren of our grandchildren, in the same manner as I, at this moment, would pay a price to see and learn how our forbears of past two or more generations lived within the context indicated above.
