These black holes grow their mass in symbiosis with their host galaxy and moderate their star formation. When matter is driven towards the nucleus, an accretion disk is formed to transfer angular momentum and considerable energy is released when the material falls into the black hole: this is the phenomenon of active galactic nuclei (AGN). A nucleus can shine one thousand times more brightly than the entire galaxy with its 200 billion stars. The nuclear activity can take many forms, from very powerful quasars to more ordinary Seyfert galaxies, passing by radio-galaxies, which eject a collimated plasma at ten times the radius of the galaxy. This book examines all of these manifestations and presents a unified view. When two galaxies merge, a binary black hole is formed and the two black holes will spiral inwards and merge, emitting long gravitational waves, which could be detected by the future LISA satellite.

Book excerpt: Arrays of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) probe the very highenergy (VHE) gamma-ray sky. Their working principle consists of the simultaneous observation of air showers initiated by the interaction of VHE gamma rays and cosmic rays with the atmosphere. Cherenkov photons induced by a given shower are focused onto the camera plane of the telescopes in the array, producing a stereoscopic record of the event. This image contains the longitudinal development of the airshower, together with its spatial, temporal, and calorimetric information. The properties of the originating VHE particle (type, energy, and incoming direction) can be inferred from those images by reconstructing the whole event using machine learning techniques. In this thesis, a purely deep learning (DL) driven full-event reconstruction of simulated, stereoscopic IACT events of the future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is presented. In addition, we apply DL algorithms on real observational IACT data, utilizing Crab Nebula observations by the MAGIC telescopes. In order to conduct all necessary research to achieve the former milestones we developed CTLearn, a package that includes modules for loading and manipulating IACT data and for running DL models, using pixel-wise camera data as input...

It is four years since the first Workshop dedicated to High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy was held at Ootacamund, India. At that meeting the developments in Very High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy over a period of more than 20 years were reported and the methodology, limitations, improvements and prospects for further progess were discussed. The possible requirement for a follow-up meeting was clear if the optimistic future foreseen for the field at the Ooty meeting was correct. The Durham meeting was suggested to fill this role. Although the arrangements for the Durham meeting were discussed as long ago as 1983 with possible dates in 1984 or 1986, the eventual date in 1986 has proved admirable and has coincided with a time when further advances have been reported. An important feature of the proposal for the Durham meeting was the emphasis on a series of Workshop sessions, the conclusions of each to be summarized by a Rapporteur. The purpose of these sessions was to provide a consensus view of many of the important areas in the field at a time of increasing interest by the rest of the astrophysics community.
